Sundar Pichai's Net Worth Hits $1.1 Billion After Alphabets Market Surge
Alphabet Inc.'s continued rally on the stock market has delivered a windfall not only for investors but also for its CEO, Sundar Pichai, who has now crossed the $1 billion net worth milestone. The 53-year-old, originally from Tamil Nadu, has seen his fortune rise to $1.1 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. This financial leap is driven largely by the surge in Alphabet's stock, which has soared over 120% since early 2023, adding over $1 trillion to the company's market capitalisation, reported Bloomberg. Unlike tech titans such as Meta's Mark Zuckerberg or Nvidia's Jensen Huang, who built their wealth through founding equity, Mr Pichai's ascent is distinct. He joined Google, now Alphabet's main subsidiary, in 2004, long after its 1998 founding. His early work on Chrome and Android laid the groundwork for his elevation to CEO in 2015. It was the same year Google restructured under the Alphabet umbrella. He was named the Alphabet CEO in 2019. Earlier this month, Mr Pichai became the company's longest-serving chief executive, completing nearly a decade at the helm. In Tamil Nadu, Mr Pichai's family lived in a two-room flat. They didn't have a car and only had a telephone when he was 12. In 1993, when he secured a scholarship to Stanford University, his parents spent over $1,000, more than his father's annual income, to buy a plane ticket to the US. 'One of the first things I did as CEO was to pivot the company to be focused on AI,' Mr Pichai told Bloomberg in an October 2024 interview. Alphabet has increased its investment in artificial intelligence under his leadership. An important turning point in the company's AI development was the $400-million acquisition of London-based DeepMind in 2014. Since then, Pichai has overseen a sharp rise in investment, with Alphabet spending close to $50 billion last year alone on AI infrastructure. The company released its second-quarter results in July 2025 that surpassed analyst projections. Alphabet shares climbed by 4.1% following the earnings announcement. It also disclosed a 16% rise in research and development spending. 'Our AI infrastructure investments are crucial to meeting the growth in demand for cloud customers,' Mr Pichai said on a July 23 call with analysts following the results release. Mr Pichai holds only 0.02% of Alphabet's stock, presently worth about $440 million. The rest of his wealth is primarily in cash, having offloaded over $650 million worth of stock in the past decade. Bloomberg estimates that his holdings would now be worth over $2.5 billion had he held on to all his shares.

Google launches AI try-on for clothes, teases generative shopping tools
Online shopping just got a futuristic upgrade, and it's coming straight from Google. The tech giant is rolling out a fresh wave of AI-powered features to its shopping platform in the US, aiming to make discovering fashion, tracking prices, and scoring deals easier (and smarter) than ever. This comes just a month after launching its app Doppl, an AI-driven virtual fitting room that allows users to try on clothing using a digital version of themselves. While Google has experimented with virtual try-ons before, this is its most tailored and individualised effort to the heart of the latest update is an expanded virtual try-on feature for clothing, which now lets you see how certain outfits might look on you, using a full-body image. Initially launched in May for Search Labs users only, this AI-powered tool is now becoming widely available, and could be a total game-changer for fashion lovers wary of buying without trying. 'To get started, tap on any product listing across Google or any apparel product result on Google Images and tap the 'try it on' icon,' Google explained. 'Upload a full-length photo of yourself and within moments you'll see what you might look like wearing those gingham-print pants on the first day of class.' In other words, shopping online might soon feel a lot more like stepping into a fitting room, without leaving your sofa. The system generates a visual of how the item fits your unique body shape, and you can flick through different styles you've tried on, save your favourites, or even share them with friends to get their verdict before you the previews prove to be accurate over time, this could be a major leap forward in bridging the gap between online and in-store the virtual makeover, Google is also refreshing its price-tracking tools, giving shoppers more control over how and when they're notified about deals.'Starting to roll out today, when US shoppers hit 'track price' to set an alert for a product, you can specify your preferred size and colour, as well as the price you want to pay,' the company said. 'The Shopping Graph has products and prices from all across the web, so we'll let you know when there's an offer that meets your criteria.'That means no more endlessly refreshing tabs or checking apps for that perfect price drop, Google will simply nudge you when your dream product hits your budget sweet yet another upgrade, Google is enhancing its AI-powered text-based search features to help users discover items based on conversational queries. Whether you're typing 'chunky knit jumper for winter' or 'flowy summer dress under $50,' Google's updated system will work behind the scenes to match your words with suitable products more accurately than these tools arriving just ahead of the busy sales season, shoppers in the US will likely find them especially useful as they hunt down both looks and now, these AI-powered features are rolling out exclusively to users in the United States, though wider international expansion is expected in the future. So while global users will have to wait a bit longer to play dress-up with AI, this sneak peek into the future of online retail is a clear signal of where e-commerce is headed.- Ends

Why did Donald Trump warn tech giants like Google and Microsoft against hiring Indians?
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday lashed out at major American technology companies for outsourcing manufacturing to China and employing workers in countries like India. US President Donald Trump gestures during an event in Washington DC, July 23, 2025(REUTERS) Speaking at the AI Summit in Washington, Trump declared that such practices would no longer be tolerated under his administration. 'Many of our largest tech companies have reaped the blessings of American freedom while building their factories in China, hiring workers in India and slashing profits in Ireland, you know that,' Donald Trump said. 'All the while dismissing and even censoring their fellow citizens right here at home. Under President Trump, those days are over.' The remarks came as the President signed three executive orders aimed at boosting the US artificial intelligence (AI) sector. Among these was a sweeping White House action plan titled the America's AI action plan, designed to secure US leadership in global AI development. 'America first' strategy Trump urged technology giants like Google and Microsoft that are based in US to adopt a more patriotic approach to their operations, aligning with what he described as national interests. 'We need US technology companies to be all in for America. We want you to put America first. You have to do that. That's all we ask,' news agency PTI quoted Trump as saying. He further called for 'a new spirit of patriotism and national loyalty in Silicon Valley and long beyond Silicon Valley.' Framing AI development as essential to economic and military supremacy, Trump declared: 'America is the country that started the AI race, and as president of the United States, I'm here today to declare that America is going to win it.' He added, 'Winning this competition will be a test of our capacities unlike anything since the dawn of the space age.' Trump's recent comments criticising American tech companies for outsourcing jobs and hiring foreign workers have sparked concern among the global tech community, particularly in countries like India. While no formal policy changes have been announced as of now, industry experts say the President's remarks could influence the hiring decisions of major tech firms that depend on skilled talent from India. Indian professionals working in areas such as software development, data science, and artificial intelligence in the US may now face growing uncertainty.
