Liverpool FC and fans devastated by Diogo Jota's death in car crash

Jota arrived at Anfield in 2020 and scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club in all competitions. Jota's brother, who died alongside him, was also a footballer, with Penafiel in the Portuguese second division. 'We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day,' the Portuguese Football Federation said. A minute's silence will be observed at all of Thursday's and Friday's matches at the Women's Euros taking place in Switzerland, Uefa said in a statement. 'The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honoured the name of Portugal, and his brother, is unexpected and tragic,' Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said on X. 'I offer my most sincere condolences to his family.' Jota helped Liverpool win the Premier League last season, scoring the derby winner against Everton and also won the FA Cup in 2022 and League Cup in 2022 and 2024 with the Merseyside outfit. Born in Porto, he began his career with local team Pacos de Ferreira before switching to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017. 'We are heartbroken. Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves,' the club said. Pacos de Ferreira said in a statement that both brothers had left their mark on the small club located east of Porto. 'Diogo Jota became a reference for this club,' it said on social media. 'An athlete with a champion's attitude who reached the highest levels of professional football. His name is part of our history.' He also made 49 appearances for Portugal, twice winning the Uefa Nations League. 'It is a remarkable achievement for a small guy that came from Gondomar, where I had this dream,' Jota said on Liverpool's website of winning the Premier League. 'It's a moment I will cherish forever.' Reuters

Kaizer Chiefs labelled as a joke after announcing unknown new recruits

Chiefs welcome new players KAIZER Chiefs have been criticised for the signing of unknown players such as attacking midfielder Ethan Chislett. | @KaizerChiefs Image: Kaizer Chiefs on X Kaizer Chiefs' former attacker and controversil football pundit Junior Khanye says the 'club is not serious' after overlooking local depth and signing unpopular players from abroad for next season. Amakhosi announced the signing of overseas-based trio Flavio Silva, Ethan Chislett on respective deals this week. Silva is a Guinea Bissau-born player, but he was based in Indonesia where he played for Persebaya Surabaya, netting nine goals in 33 matches, last season. Chislett and Shinga, meanwhile, are making their respective homecomings as the Durban-born do was based in England and Portugal respectively. Player Announcements! We are pleased to announce the signing of Portuguese striker Flávio Silva from Persebaya Surabaya in Indonesia. The Guinea Bissau-born player will wear jersey #77. Chiefs have fallen from grace in recent years as they ended a 10-year drought last season, but still failed to finish in the Top 8 in the Betway Premiership. The Chiefs newbies will not have it easy, though, as they are already under scrutiny from Khanye who questioned their signings over locals such as Sipho Mbule. 'Chiefs are joking,' Khanye told Independent Media on Thursday afternoon. 'They don't want to compete with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. 'If Pirates can go for Sipho Mbule, (then why can't Chiefs do the same)? Sure, Mbule's reputation is not clean, it was going to be difficult for any team to commit to him right now. 'But if you look at his quality, there are other ways you can do (to keep him on a straight and narrow path). So, for me, my brother, I don't think Chiefs are serious. 'They should have put clauses in Mbule's contract. When you sign Mbule, you know that there's a lot of thing he was going to bring to the club. 'The worst part is that (his agent) Mike Makaab admitted that he was offered to Kaizer Chiefs. So Chiefs continued to do what they've been doing all these years.' Player Announcements! We are pleased to announce the signing of 25-year old Nkanyiso Shinga. The talented left-back is a versatile operator who can also play in midfield and attack. He will don jersey #74. Welcome to the Family! — Kaizer Chiefs (@KaizerChiefs) July 1, 2025 Makaab is also Chislett's agent. As such, he played a key role in the 26-year-old leaving Port Vale to return hom after a long time. But despite scoring goals and registering assists for the third-tier outfit in England, Khanye is not convinced that he's a right player for a club such as Chiefs. According to Transfermarkt, Chislett played 242 games across all competitions in England and only scored 40 goals and registered 16 assists. 'Let's be honest. Where did they see that guy? Yes, it's hard to judge someone, but based on the history, he is not convincing,' Khanye explained. 'Chiefs turn out to be a joke because they sign unknown players such as (Akumu) Agay, Dax (Andrianarimanana), Ranga (Chivaviro) and (Inacio) Miguel. 'Where do they see these players? They are making the same mistake of relying on database information and agents who recommend their players. I am very disappointed!' Player Announcements! We are pleased to announce the signing of 26-year-old Ethan Chislett, an attacking midfielder known for his creative abilities. Welcome to the Family! — Kaizer Chiefs (@KaizerChiefs) July 1, 2025
