PredictIt Says It Can Expand Political Trades Under CFTC Deal

Bloomberga day ago

PredictIt, one of the original US politics-betting platforms, said it reached a new agreement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to allow it expand its operations.
The new agreement with PredictIt, a popular site for bets on politics, allows for an unlimited number of participants to trade in each market, ditching a prior 5,000-person cap, the company said in a statement. Traders can now wager up to $3,500 rather than $850 on any single contract. The new metric is the same as the individual political campaign contribution limit, and may be adjusted with each election cycle.

Canada weighs limits on US lumber exports to ease trade friction, British Columbia premier tells Bloomberg News

(Reuters) -Canada is open to considering limits on softwood lumber exports to the U.S. to try to ease some trade friction between the neighboring countries, British Columbia Premier David Eby told Bloomberg News in a report published on Wednesday. "One of the asks for years out of the American coalition has been a quota — that there's a fixed amount of lumber that gets to come from Canada," Eby told Bloomberg News. "And I think that, for the first time, there's some willingness to have a conversation about what that could look like." Sign in to access your portfolio

Eshbal Functional Food eyes another acquisition in North America

Eshbal Functional Food has signed a letter of intent to buy a majority stake in US low-carb and gluten-free business Dare to Be Different Foods (D2BD). According to Canada-listed Eshbal, the acquisition is subject to the parties entering into a definitive agreement, including approval by the TSX Venture Exchange. Based in New York, D2BD was founded in 2012 and manufactures low-carb and gluten-free frozen products, including crusts, crisps and gnocchi that are formulated with broccoli and cauliflower. Eshbal plans to pay a mix of cash and shares for its planned 55% stake in D2BD. The company said it may put up more shares in itself if D2BD meets certain revenue thresholds. The amount of cash payments and number of Eshbal shares it issues will be determined after due diligence is completed. The news comes as Eshbal, which is primarily based in Israel but has a North American office in Vancouver, has named Avi Markus as its new chief commercial officer of North America. In the new role, Markus will oversee commercial operations that include sales, distribution, partnerships and business development. His most recent role was at Canada-based infant-formula business Else Nutrition. Earlier this month, Eshbal signed a letter of intent to acquire Gluten Free Nation, a Texas-based commercial baker of gluten-free bread and baked goods. Eshbal said at the time that they are 'excited about the potential to integrate Gluten Free Nation's product line and leverage its customer relationships to further expand Eshbal's North American presence'. While the company supplies foodservice and retail in Israel, it recently expanded into North America following its reverse takeover with Canada-based Hakken Capital Corp. where it also gained a listing on the TSX Venture Exchange. According to Eshbal's most recent financial report, the firm generated an annual revenue of approximately $11.4m by the end of 2024. Ex-Kraft Heinz executive Adam Butler joins Second Nature Brands as CEO

Second Nature Brands, the US-based snacks and treats business that has bolstered its portfolio through M&A, has named Adam Butler as its new CEO. Former Kraft Heinz executive Butler, who will take on the role at the CapVest Partners-backed company in August, replaces Vic Mehren. He has been CEO at the Kar's Nuts trail mixes brand owner since 2019. Butler most recently headed up Insignia International, which previously traded as Flagship Food Group until a name change last year, and had also engaged in M&A through assets such as La Tortilla Factory and Young Guns. Butler said of his appointment: 'Second Nature Brands has a strong portfolio, a talented team, and a clear vision for the future. I look forward to building on the strong foundation Vic has laid and working with the great team to realise the company's ambitious growth plans." In a statement, Mehren was credited with taking Second Nature Brands from a $190m business to a 'snacking leader with a modern portfolio of brands, expanded operational scale, and a strengthened foundation for growth'. Backed by CapVest since 2022, current sales were put at around $500m. Second Nature Brands struck a hefty deal last year for the Voortman cookies brand bought from US food peer JMSmucker for $305m, along with a factory and 300-odd employees. Voortman cookies sales were put at $65m at the time. In other transactions, Michigan-headquartered Second Nature Brands acquired Sahale Snacks from Smucker the previous year for $24m, and in 2022, the company snapped up Brownie Brittle. 'We've built something truly special - an incredible team, a values-driven culture, and a business that's positioned to keep winning,' the departing Mehren said. 'I'm proud of what we've achieved together and confident that now is the right time to pass the baton. Adam is the right leader to take SNB into its next chapter, and I'm excited to support him through a smooth transition." Mehren will assist Butler in a transition process through the remainder of July. Butler spent more than 17 years at Kraft Heinz, including a period before the 2015 merger of Kraft Foods and HJ Heinz. He was president of Kraft Heinz's Canada business before leaving for Insignia, and also held the same role at the US snacks and drinks business.
