Mumbai Rains: Heavy rains trigger ‘Orange alert', water logging causes traffic snarls; Thane & Raigad on ‘red alert'

An Orange Alert is typically issued when rainfall is expected to range between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within 24 hours, signalling the likelihood of significant disruption due to heavy showers.
According to the IMD, moderate rain is forecast across many parts of Mumbai and surrounding areas over the next four days. Short-term predictions warn of moderate rain, thunder, lightning, and strong winds in some pockets of Mumbai and Thane over the next three to four hours.
The department has urged people to exercise caution when venturing outdoors, especially in areas prone to waterlogging and flash floods.

Yellow alert issued after heavy rain
NEW DELHI: Several parts of Delhi received rain on Wednesday afternoon, following which the IMD issued a yellow alert. The areas that received rain included parts of Central Delhi, South Delhi and Southeast Delhi. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the yellow colour code indicates a chance of significant rainfall with the possibility of isolated flooding in low-lying areas and potential disruptions to outdoor activities. Meanwhile, Delhi on Wednesday recorded a minimum temperature of 24.5 degrees celsius, three notches below the season's normal, the weather office said. The relative humidity at 8.30 am on Wednesday was 89%. The maximum temperature hovered around 34 degrees, the IMD said. The air quality was recorded in the satisfactory category, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 9 am recorded 60. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered good, 51 and 100 satisfactory, 101 and 200 moderate, 201 and 300 poor, 301 and 400 very poor, and 401 and 500 severe.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the system is likely to strengthen into a moderate cyclone and is tracking towards Indonesia. This weather development has led to increased cloud activity over the Bay of Bengal, enhancing the probability of rainfall across the Telugu-speaking states. According to the IMD, Telangana is expected to experience heavy rainfall from July 17 to 19. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and the Union Territory of Yanam are forecast to receive similar weather between July 18 and 20, while Rayalaseema is likely to see rain on July 18 and 19. Widespread heavy to very heavy showers are also anticipated in Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka through to July 22. Wind speeds across southern India are projected to range between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour over the next five days. Throughout the week, light rainfall is expected in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Yanam. On July 17, storm clouds from Uttar Pradesh moved southwards in a fan-shaped pattern, resulting in morning showers in the northern districts of Telangana. Rain is predicted to intensify after 5pm and continue until the early hours of Friday, with moderate to heavy downpours likely in several regions, including Hyderabad. In Andhra Pradesh, similar cloud formations are moving towards the Bay of Bengal, bringing morning showers to northern parts of the state. Rain will gradually spread across the region from 5pm onwards, persisting until around 11pm in Rayalaseema and continuing until 5am in coastal and northern districts. Guntur, Kadapa, and Rajahmundry are expected to receive heavy rainfall on Thursday. Wind speeds over the Arabian Sea currently stand at 52 kilometres per hour, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are experiencing lighter winds of 12 and 11 kilometres per hour, respectively, conditions considered favourable for rainfall. Meanwhile, winds over the Bay of Bengal have reached 38 kilometres per hour. The IMD has clarified that, contrary to circulating reports, there is no low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal at present. Daytime temperatures are forecast to range between 31 and 34 degree Celsius in Telangana and 35 to 36 degree Celsius in Andhra Pradesh. Coastal regions will remain hot throughout the day, with increased chances of evening rainfall. Humidity levels are expected to remain high overnight, 85% in Telangana and 89% in Andhra Pradesh, likely contributing to heavy overnight rainfall and a wet start to the following day.
