Bali flights canceled after Indonesian volcano erupts
A volcanic eruption in eastern Indonesia has forced the cancelation of more than two dozen flights to and from the resort island of Bali. Local authorities raised the alert status to the highest level, and warned of the risk of volcanic mudflows in rivers.
Indonesia's volcano monitoring agency said Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki on Flores Island erupted on Tuesday, spewing a column of ash 10 kilometers high.
Reuters news agency reported the eruption forced the evacuation of residents from two nearby villages. While no casualties have been reported, the streets were coated in large amounts of ash and gravel.
A 34-year-old woman recalled the moment the volcano erupted. She said she was in her front lawn of her home and stones rained down. She fled the town and came back when the activity subsided.
Over 30 international and domestic flights to and from Bali's airport had been canceled as of Wednesday, according to a statement from the airport operator. Flights affected included several from Singapore, Australia and India.

Mt. Shinmoe erupts in southwest Japan, alert level remains at 2
Mount Shinmoe, located in the Kirishima mountain range bordering Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures in southwestern Japan, erupted on Sunday evening. The mountain last erupted seven years ago. The Kagoshima Meteorological Office says an eruption occurred around 4:37 p.m. and sent up a volcanic plume more than 500 meters into the sky. The plume is believed to have drifted east to the Miyazaki side. It is unconfirmed whether the material included volcanic rocks. Officials say residents of Takaharu Town in Miyazaki Prefecture reported that volcanic ashes were falling, and a security camera in Kobayashi City captured the eruption. The Japan Meteorological Agency lowered the volcanic alert for Mount Shinmoe to Level 2 from Level 3 on its five-level scale last month. Authorities kept the alert level at 2 after the latest eruption. They warn that large volcanic rocks may fall within about a two-kilometer radius from the crater, and that pyroclastic flows could travel within about a one-kilometer radius. They also urged people in downwind areas to be cautious of ash and small rocks. Ground movements continued to suggest the mountain is expanding, as volcanic earthquakes increased sharply on Sunday. Japanese nationals evacuate from Israel, Iran to neighboring countries
Japan's Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi says about 90 Japanese nationals and their families have safely evacuated from Israel and Iran to neighboring countries. Iwaya told reporters on Friday morning that 66 people who left Iran had arrived in Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, at around 8:15 a.m., Japan time. He also said that 21 people who evacuated from Israel had reached Jordan's capital, Amman, at around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Japan time. Medical attaches and other Japanese embassy officials are taking care of the evacuees. They say they have found no health problems. Iwaya said the second round of evacuations from Iran by bus will take place as early as Saturday. He said the government will do whatever it can to secure the safety of Japanese nationals while closely monitoring developments.
