Nathan Lyon expects another World Test Championship Final

India Gazette2 days ago
Saint George's [Grenada], July 1 (ANI): Veteran Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has expressed his desire to continue playing Test cricket, with a strong focus on helping his team secure a second ICC World Test Championship crown, as per the official website of the ICC.
Lyon played a major role in Australia's first victory in the World Test Championship Final against India in 2023 and was part of the side that fell to South Africa in the decider at Lord's last month.
While the final of the next edition of the World Test Championship is still two years away, Lyon has no thoughts of retiring just yet, despite the fact, he recently handed over the task of leading Australia's victory song to keeper Alex Carey.
The 37-year-old still has plenty he wants to achieve, with away series victories in India and England and another World Test Championship title right at the top of his list.
'I've always said I want to win away in India. I want to win away in England,' Lyon said, as quoted from the official website of the ICC.
'We've got that opportunity in a couple of years, but we've also got to take it Test by Test and make sure that we're doing everything here in the West Indies right,' he added.
'Then we've got a massive summer at home with the Ashes,' he noted.
'But another World Test Championship Final would be on my cards for sure,' the veteran spinner said.
Lyon currently has a total of 556 Test wickets to his name, which is third on the list for Australian bowlers behind fellow spinner Shane Warne (708) and former quick Glenn McGrath (563).
With two Tests remaining in the West Indies this month and the visit from England later this year still to come for the Aussies in 2025, there's every chance Lyon overtakes McGrath quickly and closes in on Warne's magical mark in the coming months.
Lyon is not focused on potentially becoming Australia's greatest wicket-taker and wants to focus on winning games of Test cricket for his side.
'Warney's (Shane Warne) a long way away,' Lyon said.
'And in my eyes, he's the greatest to ever play the game. I'm just lucky to be part of a pretty special cricket team at the moment. We're on our way to becoming a great cricket team, we are not there (yet), as I always say. But to be part of this bowling attack and play my role is special. That's the reason why I keep playing,' he added. (ANI)

"Fixation on all-rounders has never worked": Moody reacts to India's "baffling" selection for second Test

New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody didn't mince his words while decoding India's 'baffling' final XI selection for the second Test in Birmingham against England on Wednesday. After surrendering to a five-wicket defeat in Leeds, India is in the race to nullify England's 1-0 advantage by changing their ill-fortune at Edgbaston. While trying to force parity in the five-match series, India made a couple of bold calls by lining up with three all-rounders, dropping Jasprit Bumrah and lining up with five specialist batters. Moody struggled to fathom India's decision to 'gamble' with five specialist batters and the fixation to line up with all-rounders, a strategy that has never worked. India has implemented the three all-rounder combination twice during their tour of Australia in the last two Tests and ended up savouring the bitter taste of defeat in each clash. 'India's selection for this test is baffling. No Bumrah is one thing, but to only have 5 specialist batsmen is a gamble. The fixation on all-rounders who are there to offer depth with bat and ball has never worked. Specialists are always going to offer more over a test,' Moody wrote on X. Among the host of changes for the second Test, India replaced Bumrah with Akash Deep and Shardul Thakur with young Nitish Kumar Reddy. However, the most eye-catching change turned out to be Washington Sundar, a spin-bowling all-rounder coming in for Sai Sudharsan, who made his debut at number three at Headingley. India captain Shubman Gill offered a sneak peek into the blueprint that India will try to follow for the next four days in pursuit of a series-levelling victory. During the toss, Gill explained that Bumrah's absence comes down to their approach to managing his workload. While the inclusion of all-rounders stems from their twin tail-end collapses in the series opener. 'No Bumrah. Just to manage his workload. We did get a good break, and this is an important match for us. But the third Test being at Lord's, we think there'll be more in that pitch, so we'll use him there. We were tempted to play Kuldeep, but looking at the last match, our lower order didn't do well, so we decided to add some depth to the batting,' Gil said during the time of the toss. (ANI)

With two medals secured on Day 3 and several boxers in contention, Team India continues its promising run at the Astana leg, with sights set on the finals in New Delhi later this year. Earlier in the tournament, in the women's 54kg category, Sakshi put on a composed display to defeat England's Charley Davison with a unanimous 5:0 decision in her pre-quarterfinal bout. Jaismine followed with a confident showing of her own in the women's 57kg division, overcoming Azerbaijan's Aynur Mikayilova by the same margin to seal her place in the last eight. Lakshya Chahar delivered a gritty performance in the men's 80kg category, moving past Bulgaria's William Cholov 4:1 in a split verdict. Meanwhile, Manish Rathore exited the competition after a closely contested bout against Rui Yamaguchi of Japan in the men's 55kg category. Sakshi, Lakshya and Jaismine now join Sachin Siwach, Hitesh Gulia, Muskan, Minakshi and Sanju in the next round, underlining India's strong start to the tournament in Astana. In the Brazil leg in April earlier this year, the Indian contingent delivered an impressive performance in their first-ever outing at the Elite level international meet organised by World Boxing, bagging six medals, including a gold and a silver, at Foz Do Iguacu. Four Indian players bagged bronze medals, including Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (50kg), Manish Rathore (55kg), Sachin (60kg) and Vishal (90kg). (ANI)
