4,000 structures razed, 10k bighas freed at Rengma Reserve Forest
2
Guwahati: After five days of the first phase of eviction on Saturday, over 10,000 bighas (approx. 1,300 hectares or 13 sq km) of forest land have been reclaimed and around 4,000 concrete houses demolished at Uriamghat in Golaghat's Rengma Reserve Forest.
Sarupathar BJP MLA Biswajit Phukan, who is overseeing the eviction operation, told TOI, "The first phase of the eviction drive at Rengma is over. Initially, we estimated the encroached land to be about 11,000 bigha (approx. 14.3 sq km), but it turned out to be much more. In these five days, we have reclaimed about 70% of the total encroached area."
He added that the notice period for second phase of eviction in Rengma reserve forest is not over yet.
The forest area in Sarupathar comprises Rengma and South Nambor Reserve Forests. Phukan said eviction will begin in two villages in South Nambor on Sunday.
Phukan added that once the eviction is complete, the govt plans to develop the area, including transforming it into a tourist destination.
Eviction at Rengma was kicked off at Bidyapur market early morning of July 29, where the authorities demolished around 120 commercial structures. Large number of bulldozers were pressed into service in presence of police, forest personnel, and CRPF. About 80% of the over 2500 families had already vacated voluntarily by July 28.
The evicted families primarily belong to the Muslim community. Ahead of the eviction, Nagaland govt had issued an advisory to bordering districts to prevent displaced people from crossing into the state.

"A For Akhilesh": Samajwadi Party Leader Faces Case For Teaching "Politicised Alphabets"
Saharanpur (UP): A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against a local Samajwadi Party leader in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur for allegedly teaching "politicised alphabets" to children. SP president Akhilesh Yadav attacked the state government over the FIR. According to SP City Vyom Bindal, a complaint was filed by Main Singh, a resident of the Kallarpur Gurjar village, alleging that local SP leader Farhad Alam Gada was teaching children "politicised alphabets" at a "PDA Pathshala." The complainant says that the children were taught "A for Akhilesh", "B for Babasaheb", "D for Dimple," and "M for Mulayam Singh Yadav". The incident came to light after an alleged video of the lesson, recorded at the SP leader's home in Ramnagar, was posted on social media and went viral. The children in the video were reportedly from a private school and were seen wearing their uniforms. Reacting to the development, former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav posted on 'X', "Even the British did not file an FIR for studying. The anti-education face of the BJP has now been exposed to the public. Now the BJP will be gone forever. Condemnable." — Akhilesh Yadav (@yadavakhilesh) August 3, 2025 In his defence, Farhad Gada had previously claimed that the "PDA Pathshala" was not just for teaching ABCs but also to educate children about the "great men of Samajwadi ideology." He had also stated his intention to open similar schools across the district.

Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde saves face and his2 ‘controversial' ministers
For deputy chief minister and Shiv Sena president Eknath Shinde , it seemed like a face-saving exercise when he was able to protect his trusted aide social justice minister Sanjay Shirsat, as well as minister of state for home Yogesh Kadam, son of former minister Ramdas Kadam. Even as the opposition was pressing for their removal from the state cabinet, Shinde visited New Delhi and called on Union home minister Amit Shah for a relief. According to reports, the BJP high command spoke to CM Devendra Fadnavis and conveyed the sentiments of the home minister. During the recently concluded monsoon session, a video surfaced allegedly showing Shirsat sitting in his bedroom with a bag filled with cash. In the subsequent hue and cry in both Houses of the state legislature, it was assumed that Shinde would 'sacrifice' Shirsat to protect himself. Shirsat, however, was only issued a warning. When Parab insisted on stern action against Kadam, the latter surrendered a few licences of the bar. In his arguments, Parab had raised a basic question: How can the minister of state for home's mother operate a dance bar which has been raided by police for illegal activities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo To make his point, Parab had even tabled a copy of the first information report, which had full details of the bar, name of the owner, along with the names and addresses of the girls who were caught during the raid. Parab's disclosure had caused massive embarrassment not only for Shinde, but even Fadnavis and the BJP leadership. Kolhapur HC bench soon, thanks to CJI Gavai & CM Thanks to the lead taken by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Gavai and CM Fadavis, a new bench of Bombay high court will come at Kolhapur from Aug 18. The bench will cater to the districts of Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. A few days ago, when Gavai was in Maharashtra after he took charge as CJI, he had extended his support to the demand for a Kolhapur HC bench. Besides leading lawyers, Fadnavis too had taken up the proposal with PM Modi and successive law ministers. A few years ago, when a section of lawyers had launched an agitation in Pune demanding a Kolhapur bench, Fadnavis had extended support. The agitation was withdrawn following an intervention of the central govt. The demand fizzled out for a prolonged period, but gained momentum after Gavai took charge as CJI. PMK man detained for Facebook post against Tamil Nadu minister M R K Panneerselvam
Dharmapuri: The Pennagaram police on Sunday picked up a PMK functionary for making a derogatory remark about agriculture minister M R K Panneerselvam on social media on Saturday. In protest, PMK supporters staged a demonstration and blocked the road in front of the police station. They dispersed when police released the functionary after questioning. While attending Aadi Perukku festival in Hogenakkal on Saturday, the minister had commented on PMK leader Anbumani's padayatra, wondering what rights he was going to restore. "Is he going to restore his own rights by asking his father?" the minister had asked the gathering. In reaction, PMK functionary Muthulingam, of Eriyur in Dharmapuri, posted a derogatory remark against the minister on his Facebook account. DMK members, led by Pennagaram South union secretary Murugesan, lodged a police complaint, demanding the arrest of Muthulingam for his Facebook post against the minister. The Pennagaram police subsequently detained Muthulingam for questioning. On hearing about this, PMK members gathered outside the police station on Sunday and held talks with police. When police refused to release Muthulingam, the PMK members blocked the road in front of the police station, resulting in a heated exchange between police personnel and the PMK members. Police eventually released Muthulingam. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !
