ChemOne secures US$350mil Islamic insurance cover from IsDB'S unit
In a statement today, the Singapore-based petrochemicals, green energy and natural resources conglomerate said the cover is designed to support Islamic banks involved in the project financing of the Pengerang Energy Complex Sdn Bhd (PEC), highlighting strong institutional confidence and the project's long-term strategic value to Johor.
The ICIEC cover is structured under a Murabahah financing facility, providing 90 per cent cover on both principal and profit -- significantly de-risking the transaction for participating Islamic banks, including the National Bank of Kuwait, the Qatar National Bank, Al Rajhi Bank Malaysia and Al Rajhi Bank Saudi Arabia.
ChemOne chief financial officer Mayank Vishnoi said that ICIEC's support provides a strong validation of PEC's financial strength and its far-reaching development impact.
"PEC will drive regional industrial growth, create thousands of jobs and support regional value chains to all while adhering to global standards for sustainable and responsible financing," he said.
Additionally, ChemOne said that the IsDB Group, through the IsDB and the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD), has committed a direct investment of US$150 million via the Istisna-Ijara structures.
"With this, the IsDB Group's total support for PEC, including both direct investment and credit enhancement, exceeds US$500 million, making it one of the group's most significant engagements in Southeast Asia.
"ICIEC's involvement is underpinned by strong financial fundamentals, backed by Standard & Poor's AA- and Moody's Aa3 credit ratings and reflects its core mandate to promote investment across member states," it said. - Bernama

Nikkei, EU stocks surge as US-Japan trade deal avoids the worst
A woman walks past an electronic screen displaying the stock index prices of Asian countries outside a brokerage in Tokyo, Japan April 24, 2025. REUTERS/Issei Kato SYDNEY: Japanese shares surged to a one-year high on Wednesday as the country struck a trade deal with the United States that lowers tariffs on its autos, while also reviving hopes for a EU-US agreement that boosted European stock futures. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said a trade deal with Tokyo will include Japan paying a lower-than-threatened 15% tariff on shipments to the U.S. It followed an agreement with the Philippines that will see the U.S. collect a 19% tariff rate on imports from there. Trump also said representatives from the European Union were coming for trade negotiations on Wednesday. That stirred hopes for a deal with Europe, even as the EU was reportedly refining countermeasures in case of a deadlock before the August 1 deadline. EUROSTOXX 50 futures jumped 1.3%, while Germany's DAX futures climbed 0.6%. "Expectations for a breakthrough (on the U.S.-Japan talks) were low, so Trump's announcement delivers a mild upside surprise - providing near-term relief for Japanese equities," said Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo. "Strategically, the deal allows Japan to sidestep immediate tariff escalation, while Trump's attention shifts elsewhere." Japan's Nikkei bolted 3.7% higher as shares of automakers surged on news the deal would cut the U.S. auto tariff to 15%, from a proposed 25%. Mazda Motor rallied 17%, while Toyota Motor jumped 13.6%. South Korean automakers also rallied as the Japan deal fuelled optimism over potential progress in tariff negotiations between South Korea and the United States. Analysts noted the trade deal reduced a major risk to the fragile Japanese economy, providing more scope for the Bank of Japan to raise interest rates to fight inflation. That slugged the bond market, with yields for 10-year JGBs rising a whopping 8.5 basis point to 1.585%. There were also reports Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba would soon step down to take responsibility for the ruling coalition's defeat in Sunday's upper house election. The political uncertainty reversed an early trade-inspired rise in the yen and helped the dollar nudge up 0.2% to 146.95 . Saxo's Chanana said Ishiba's departure could set the stage for leadership more aligned with pro-market policies and closer U.S. ties. "His exit is also seen as clearing a path for continuity in Japan's accommodative fiscal and monetary stance." EXTENDED DEADLINES In another positive development, U.S. and Chinese officials will meet in Stockholm next week to discuss an extension to the August 12 deadline for negotiating a trade deal, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. Chinese blue-chips rose 0.7% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained 0.8%. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan added 1.0%. Wall Street was more restrained with S&P 500 futures up 0.2%, while Nasdaq futures added 0.1%. U.S. corporate earnings reports were showing signs that Trump's trade war was hitting profit margins. General Motors tumbled 8.1% after the automaker reported a $1 billion hit from tariffs to its quarterly results. Investors are now awaiting results from Tesla and Google's parent Alphabet - two of the Magnificent 7 stocks that have driven much of the market rally fuelled by AI optimism. In the foreign exchange market, the dollar consolidated having slipped overnight in line with Treasury yields. The dollar index was a shade firmer at 97.45, after losing 0.4% on Tuesday in its third session of declines. The euro dipped 0.1% to $1.1737, after rising 0.5% the previous day. The European Central Bank is expected to hold rates steady on Thursday after eight consecutive rate cuts, with the prospect of steeper-than-expected U.S. tariffs looming. Benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yields ticked up 2 basis points to 4.36%, after slipping 3 bps overnight. While Trump continued to lash out at Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell for not cutting interest rates, Bessent said there was no need for Powell to step down immediately and could stay until next May if he chose. Investors have been worried the politicisation of the Fed could ultimately lead to rates being cut too far, fuelling inflation and pushing up long-term borrowing costs. In commodity markets, Spot gold prices eased a touch to $3,422 an ounce. Oil prices nudged higher, helped by rising prices for diesel in the U.S. where stockpiles are at their lowest levels for this time of the year since 1996. U.S. crude rose 0.4% to $65.60 per barrel, while Brent was at $68.88 per barrel, up 0.4%. - Reuters

Japan PM plans to resign after election debacle
Shigeru Ishiba had conveyed his intention to step down to those close to him, following the announcement Wednesday of a US-Japan trade deal. 23 Jul 2025 01:30pm Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Photo by Jiji Press/AFP/Japan OUT TOKYO - Having done a trade deal with US President Donald Trump, Japan's prime minister will soon announce his resignation, reports said Wednesday, after his latest election debacle left his coalition without a majority now in both houses of parliament. The reports said Shigeru Ishiba had conveyed his intention to step down to those close to him, following the announcement Wednesday of a US-Japan trade deal. Sunday's upper house election was calamitous for Ishiba's centre-right Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has governed almost continuously since 1955. Voters angry at inflation turned to other parties, notably the "Japanese first" Sanseito, whose "anti-globalist" drive echoes the agenda of populist movements elsewhere. Ishiba plans to vacate the top job by the end of August, the Mainichi daily reported. The Yomiuri newspaper said he would announce his resignation in July but did not give details of when he would leave office. US President Donald Trump waves as he greets Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba upon arrival outside the West Wing of the White House in Washington, DC, on Feb 7, 2025. Photo by Mandel Ngan/AFP These and other reports said calls for the 68-year-old to depart had grown louder within the LDP since the results of the upper house election. But he communicated his decision after striking a trade deal with Washington that cut a threatened 25-percent tariff to 15 percent ahead of an August 1 deadline. In the election on Sunday, the LDP and its junior partner Komeito fell three seats short of retaining a majority. It came only months after Ishiba's coalition was forced into a minority government in the more powerful lower house, in the LDP's worst result in 15 years. Ishiba won the party leadership in September, on his fifth try, to become the 10th LDP prime minister since 2000 -- all of them men. Since the October snap lower house election, the ruling coalition has been forced to bargain with opposition parties to pass legislation. After years of stagnant or falling prices, consumers in the world's fourth-largest economy have been squeezed by inflation since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. In particular, the price of rice has doubled, while resentment has also lingered over an LDP funding scandal. "I really hope things will get better in Japan, but the population is declining, and I think living in Japan will get tougher and tougher," Naomi Omura, an 80-year-old from Hiroshima, told AFP in Tokyo on Wednesday. "It is disappointing that Japan cannot act more strongly" towards the United States" but "I think it was good that they agreed on a lower tariff", she said. Tetsuo Momiyama, an 81-year-old Tokyo resident, said Ishiba "is finished already". "It's a good timing for him to go," Momiyama said. - AFP More Like This
