Florida rockets up ESPN college football recruiting rankings

USA Today9 hours ago

The Florida Gators are one of four new teams on the ESPN college football recruiting rankings after a strong summer filled with commitments.
Florida ranks No. 14 in ESPN's end-of-June update, according to national recruiting analyst Craig Haubert. Thirteen of the class's 14 players committed this month, with eight ESPN 300 commits now under a verbal pledge to the university. A top-10 overall recruit at defensive end and one of the best pocket passers in the class highlight both sides of the ball, but there's plenty of talent to drool over throughout the class.
"Landing one of the top defenders in the country is the fastest way to climb the recruiting rankings, and that's exactly what Billy Napier did by securing five-star defensive end JaReylan McCoy. Ranked No. 9 overall and the second-best defender in the ESPN 300, McCoy would be Florida's highest-rated defensive signee in more than a decade. The 6-foot-7, 260-pound Mississippi native brings elite length, explosive traits and a relentless motor that was on full display at the Under Armour All-America week in January."
Reeling in McCoy is another "major recruiting win for Napier" over the likes of LSU and Texas, and there's now another player with game-changing potential in the mix. Florida is also loading up on linemen, "adding critical depth as Florida looks to reassert itself in the SEC."
As anyone who follows college football recruiting knows, nothing is guaranteed these days. Florida could lose its entire class in a split second. Key fixtures of the class can bounce for a bigger NIL check. Napier prides himself on recruiting high-character athletes, but he's been burned a few times while figuring out this new age of recruiting as it changes.
For now, a top-15 class is a feather in the cap and another recruiting pitch Florida can use to land the big names, however many are left out there.

Duncan Robinson exercises option to terminate contract with Heat, though he could return to Miami

MIAMI (AP) — Duncan Robinson opted for unrestricted free agency on Sunday, exercising his early termination option for what would have been the final year of his contract with the Miami Heat. The decision doesn't mean he cannot return to the Heat. Robinson — the franchise's all-time leader in 3-pointers made — could have let his option pass Sunday and then been guaranteed $9.9 million of what was a nearly $20 million deal for this coming season. He could now negotiate a new deal with the Heat, agree to be part of a sign-and-trade for another player, or simply sign with a new club. Free agency in the NBA officially begins Monday evening; Robinson had until Sunday to decide on his termination option. The 31-year-old Robinson is a success story like few others in the NBA. He started his college career at Division III Williams, then played his way to Michigan, went undrafted and was given a chance by the Heat. From there, Robinson became a key part of the rotation. He played in 15 games as a rookie and then was essentially a full-time starter in each of the next three seasons — making at least 232 3-pointers in each of those years. His 1,202 3-pointers are the most in team history and he needed fewer games than any player in NBA history to reach a number of 3-point milestones — including 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 and 1,000 makes from beyond the arc. Robinson has averaged 11.3 points and shot 39.7% from 3-point range in his seven NBA seasons. ___ AP NBA:

Kirk Herbstreit reacts to Lee Corso's last GameDay being at Ohio State

Perfect setting for one last ride!Coach's 'First Love' as he says!! If you've tuned into ESPN's College GameDay through the years, there's one thing that has become pretty apparent. Former Ohio State quarterback and current GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit has a very good relationship with host Lee Corso. The two have a chemistry and mutual regard for each other that has gone on for almost three decades. In fact, when Corso has been absent from the show for health reasons, Herbstreit has always been right there wishing his friend well and expressing his gratitude for what he means to him and college football. So it will be with great respect and reflection that Herbstreit and the rest of the College GameDay crew pay tribute to Corso when the show hits Columbus for the massive collision between Texas and Ohio State on Aug. 30. It's the same location that Corso started the headgear tradition by donning the Brutus head in a game between OSU and Penn State on Oct. 5, 1996. But not everyone is happy about it. Dan Corso, Lee's son, expressed his desire that his father's last ride be in Tallahassee on the same date for the matchup between Alabama and Florida State, where Corso played quarterback and cornerback and was also on the baseball team. Herbstreit, though, responded to the confirmation that Ohio Stadium as the last location for his buddy as a perfect ending, showing support for his friend and for what it'll mean for GameDay fans and college football fans in general. Not only should the game be much-anticipated, but you can bet the GameDay crew is putting together plenty of moments and reflections from what Corso has meant to college football through the years. What a poetic ending to Corso's career in front of the camera for ESPN and GameDay.
