News183 days ago
New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the second time on Tuesday till 2 PM due to noisy protests by opposition parties demanding a discussion on Operation Sindoor.
This is the second consecutive day in the Monsoon session of Parliament when the House saw Opposition members trooping to the Well, raising slogans and showing placards with their demand for discussion on Operation Sindoor.
When the House met at 12 noon, Jagdambika Pal, who was chairing the House proceedings, said the government is ready to discuss any issue that the opposition wants and asked the members to list out the topics on which they want discussion at the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting later in the day.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal said, 'Government is ready to discuss any issue which the Speaker allows under the Rule. I appeal to you to go back to your seats".
Pal asked opposition members not to show placards and instead give in writing their demands at the Committee meeting.
As ruckus continued, Pal adjourned proceedings till 2 PM.
Earlier, when the House met at 11 am, opposition MPs, including Congress, were on their feet, demanding discussion on Operation Sindoor.
Speaker Om Birla intervened and told the opposition MPs that sloganeering and showing placards are not allowed inside the House. He later adjourned the House till 12 noon.
The House could not function on the first day of the session on Monday due to repeated adjournments following opposition protests over the demand of discussion on Operation Sindoor.
Under Operation Sindoor, armed forces attacked Pakistani terror sites and defence installations for three days beginning May 7 following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 in which 26 people were killed. PTI JD JD DV DV

Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day amid Opposition ruckus, sloganeering over Bihar electoral roll revision

Amid uproar from the Opposition and the demand for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day after briefly conducting business Friday. Pointing to the rules, Deputy Chairman Harivansh urged members to 'strictly adhere to well-established customs and etiquette to be observed in the Council and respect each other's privilege to speak on the floor when permitted by the Chair.' 'Yesterday, it was unfortunately observed that some members, while not being in their designated seats, were attempting to disturb the Speaker,' he said. The session began with the swearing-in of members from Tamil Nadu. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), which is an ally of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu, took oath as a Rajya Sabha member, marking his debut in the House. Three DMK members from Tamil Nadu also took the oath – S R Sivalingam, Rajathi S, and P Wilson. All of them took the oath in Tamil. Later, Deputy Chairman Harivansh said he received 28 notices under Rule 267. Notices under this rule ask to suspend all listed business and discuss an important issue that the country is facing. Notices by MPs, including Akhilesh Prasad Singh, A A Rahim, Saket Gokhale, Sushmita Dev, Jebi Mather Hisham, Tiruchi Siva, John Brittas, and Manoj Kumar Jha demanded discussion on the concerns arising from the SIR of electoral rolls undertaken by the Election Commission in Bihar. Other notices from Opposition MPs under Rule 267 called for discussions on the alleged discrimination of Bengali migrant workers in other states, restoration of constitutional democracy in Manipur, and India's trade deal with the UK and the US. Declining the notices, the Deputy Chairman pointed to 'detailed rulings on Rule 267 imparted by the Chair' in December 2022. This prompted an uproar from the Opposition. The Rajya Sabha has previously seen showdowns between Opposition members and former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar over declining of notices under Rule 267. When the House reconvened at 12 pm with Ghanshyam Tiwari in the Chair, Question Hour began amid sloganeering from Opposition members. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who was responding to a question, appealed to the Chair and Opposition members to let him respond to a question on his ministry. 'This House is the temple of democracy. The soul of democracy is dialogue and discussion. I would like to respond to the questions,' he said. With continuing sloganeering from the Opposition, the House was adjourned for the day, and is set to meet again on Monday.

Nitish berates Opposition members for coming to Assembly dressed in black

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday (July 25, 2025) berated Opposition MLAs for turning up at the Assembly wearing black shirts, as a mark of protest against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The longest serving CM of the State expressed his vexation on the final day of the monsoon session, which is the current Assembly's last before fresh elections, to be announced in barely a couple of months from now. As Speaker Nand Kishor Yadav started conducting the Question Hour, Opposition members were on their feet, raising slogans against the exercise, which has kept the assembly on the boil so far. Mr. Yadav remarked, in jest, "It is raining today. The weather is cool. Why are you people getting heated? Allow the House to function. This is the last day". Soon afterwards, the Chief Minister rose in his chair and said, "These people who are making so much noise understand nothing about legislative business. They have never done anything worthwhile". When some of the Opposition members protested, the 75-year-old Leader of the House retorted, "Why on earth are you wearing black clothes? I have been seeing you people do so for the last few days. Have you ever done so before?". Interestingly, quite a few MLAs of Mr. Kumar's JD(U) and his ally BJP had come to the House wearing helmets, claiming that they feared getting hit by the unruly Opposition members. The Speaker pleaded with the opposition members, some of whom had by the time entered the well, to behave themselves, pointing out that some school children had been invited to watch the proceedings of the House. However, some of the opposition members continued creating a ruckus, and tried to overturn furniture meant for the reporting staff. Subsequently, the Speaker adjourned the House till 2 pm, within minutes of the commencement of proceedings.

A meeting is scheduled between Pakistan Minister Ishaq Dar and US State Secretary Marco Rubio, weeks after the United States designated The Resistance Front (TRF) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. This development raises questions about the US's stance on terrorism, as Dar had previously defended the TRF in the United Nations and the Pakistani Parliament. In a speech, he stated Pakistan's refusal to accept TRF's condemnation, saying, "I got calls from big capitals... Pakistan will not accept." The meeting occurs amid a larger diplomatic effort by Pakistan, with Army Chief Asim Munir also meeting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Concurrently, India maintains its long-held position of rejecting any third-party mediation on the Kashmir issue, a role the US has previously hinted at.
