Tze Yong to undergo surgery in Doha
Tze Yong tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while competing in the Malaysian Masters last month and needs to go under the knife.
'We have agreed to send Tze Yong to Doha to undergo surgery for his ACL,' said BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh when met at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday.
'The National Sports Institute (NSI) are arranging the dates for his surgery.
'We should know when he will be going in two to three days.'
Tze Yong could take up to a year to fully recover and return to competitions after the surgery.
Earlier, former internationals Datuk Lee Chong Wei (singles) and Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles) had suggested for Tze Yong to look at the option of going abroad instead of seeking treatment locally.
Singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen had also stated that he was open to his charge going overseas for surgery.
Tze Yong only returned to competitions in April after a year out following two back surgeries.
The 25-year-old, who is currently ranked No. 125 in the world, only competed in three tournaments before injuring his knee in the Malaysian Masters first-round match against Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long.

Sentuhan Wira is the brainchild of Soon Kit and another national badminton legend, Datuk Rashid Sidek. As advisers to the production, both of them were directly involved in the development of the script and technical research on the matches, ensuring that the spirit and historical accuracy of Malaysia's 1992 Thomas Cup victory are portrayed authentically and emotionally. The film is expected to begin shooting this November and will be released in cinemas next year. Rashid backs Zii Jia and Co to end Thomas Cup wait
KUALA LUMPUR: Former world No. 1 Datuk Rashid Sidek believes Malaysia must begin early preparations if they are to reclaim the Thomas Cup — a title the nation last won in 1992. Rashid, who played a key role in that historic triumph 33 years ago, is confident the current squad has the depth and balance to challenge for the crown at next year's tournament in Denmark. "If we're serious about winning back the Thomas Cup, this is the moment," said Rashid at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing on Wednesday for the upcoming film Sentuhan Wira, which will commemorate the 1992 victory. "Our team have more depth than in past editions. We now have two strong men's singles players in Lee Zii Jia and Leong Jun Hao, and the doubles pairs are showing consistency. If everyone maintains their level, our chances are bright." Malaysia famously edged Indonesia 3-2 in a dramatic final at Stadium Negara in 1992, with Rashid playing a pivotal role. "I can still clearly see (Cheah) Soon Kit and (Soo) Beng Kiang falling to the ground. That was when we knew we were champions," he recalled. Since then, China have dominated the tournament, lifting the trophy 11 times, including at the most recent edition in Chengdu last year, where they beat Indonesia 3-1 in the final. The 57-year-old, who won a men's doubles silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, revealed that he has accepted a short-term assignment abroad, expected to last about six weeks. However, he declined to reveal the exact location, only hinting that it will be in Europe. 'I'll be heading overseas next month, but just for a brief period. I can say it's somewhere in Europe,' said Soon Kit during the launch of the "Sentuhan Wira" film project in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, which pays tribute to Malaysia's 1992 Thomas Cup triumph. 'I've never coached abroad before, but the offer came after repeated approaches from the organisers. Since it's a short-term stint, I agreed to it. 'I probably shouldn't be saying too much as it's only a temporary arrangement," he added. Soon Kit last served as a coach with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in 2016, overseeing the men's doubles department. His tenure ended two years later when his contract was not renewed.
