PN snub makes things easier, says Gabungan Rakyat Sabah
PETALING JAYA : Perikatan Nasional's decision not to collaborate with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah in the upcoming Sabah election works in GRS's favour, a leader of the ruling coalition said.
'Our affairs are now easier … without us asking, Sabah Barisan Nasional, and now PN, have stated their stance in rejecting GRS,' said GRS deputy secretary-general Armizan Mohd Ali.
'Let others speak. We welcome that. What matters is that we keep moving forward. What's important is our effort to gain the support of the people, not alignments with other coalition blocs.'
Armizan also highlighted the strength of local parties, saying they hold the final say in selecting candidates for the election.
He said that in national coalitions, letters of appointment for election candidates must be issued by the central leadership of the respective component parties, making those selected beholden to the national leadership.
This differs from Sabah-based parties, where appointment letters are issued by local party leaders, and the chief minister is chosen from among leaders elected by the people.
'Going forward, we do not want any party over there (in the peninsula) to consider themselves the 'master' or the 'boss' simply because they decide who leads Sabah.
'It's time we send a clear signal that the 'master' is not there, the 'master' is here. The ultimate 'masters' are the people of Sabah,' he said.
Yesterday, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said the coalition rejected any political cooperation with GRS in the state election, citing what he described as a betrayal by GRS after its leaders, then members of Bersatu, left the party in November 2022 following the 16th general election (GE16).
GRS is currently in discussions with Pakatan Harapan (PH) about forming an electoral alliance for the state election. PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim has since called for the PH-BN alliance to work with GRS.
GRS chairman Hajiji Noor has warned that GRS is prepared to contest the election alone if PH proceeds with teaming up solely with BN, insisting that Sabah-based parties should form the backbone of any alliance and lead the state government.

Fadillah: Federal govt allocates RM8.79b to roll out 86 projects under 12MP in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU, July 14 — The federal government, through the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), has allocated RM8.79 billion until June 2025 to implement 86 development projects in Sabah. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, stated that the total allocation will be disbursed under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP). DBKL shuts waste site, boosts monkey control after King's rebuke over Jalan Gallagher mess
KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — City Hall (DBKL) said it launched immediate clean-up operations along Jalan Gallagher here following a royal rebuke from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, over cleanliness and wildlife issues in the area. The King had raised concerns about uncollected rubbish, clogged drains and the presence of wild monkeys along the road, prompting swift intervention from the local authority. DBKL said it had ordered contractors SWCorp and Alam Flora to intensify cleaning work in the area and increase the frequency of waste collection. 'DBKL offers its deepest gratitude to His Majesty for his concern. DBKL is committed to ensuring the cleanliness, well-being, and comfort of city residents remain a priority through continuous monitoring and swift action with related agencies,' it said in a statement. A temporary waste collection site identified as the main source of filth and monkey infestation has been ordered shut. Cleaning teams have carried out drain flushing, roadside sweeping, tree pruning and removal of rotten branches, along with grass cutting and general landscape tidying. DBKL is also introducing new, sturdier rubbish bins designed to withstand animal interference and will provide individual bins to households for direct waste collection. The council said these measures aim to reduce exposed waste, which has been a key attractant for wild animals. DBKL is working closely with the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) to address the recurring monkey problem in the area. Perhilitan previously installed traps near rubbish bins and official residences including Istana Negara, and will now expand trapping operations and patrols.

PENAMPANG: GRS Deputy Secretary Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the days when a certain party or coalition in the peninsula can claim that it was responsible for making so and so an Assemblyman or the Sabah Chief Minister are over. 'We've moved on. This is our path forward. We do not want to keep hearing such claims. Past is past. What matters now is the direction we take. 'We can hear in their speeches that 'we (Malaya-based parties/coalition) made Hajiji an assemblyman, we chose Hajiji to be Chief Minister. When we are part of a national coalition or party, sentiments like that are inevitable. 'This is because to become an election candidate, the selection and the official letter of appointment (watikah) have to be issued by leaders from Peninsular Malaysia. 'Even the Chief Minister candidate was chosen from among state leaders who were appointed by the leadership in the peninsula. So whoever is picked will be expected to be loyal and obedient to the top party leadership over there (peninsula). It's different with local parties. 'The candidates are decided by, and the appointment letters issued by, the local party leaders themselves. He was referring to an accusation by Perikatan Nasional (PN) Chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in Sandakan Saturday that GRS Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor betrayed PN to support Pakatan Harapan (PH) following the last general election. Armizan said while it is the right of any individual to join national parties or national coalitions, GRS has chosen to chart its own course for the future. He also said Muhyiddin deserved thanks for stating there would be no negotiation or cooperation with GRS in the coming 17th State Election (PRN17). The Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living said Muhyiddin's remarks have eased the GRS position in Sabah. He said this development is beneficial because it was PN which publicly rejected working with GRS (in PRN17), preventing GRS from appearing to be arrogant if it (GRS) had been the ones to make such a declaration. 'Now that it is clear where PN stands and GRS doesn't have to issue a statement rejecting collaboration with certain parties — which could make us seem arrogant or conceited. Let others say it, and we'll just welcome it. 'It also makes it easier for us to manage sentiments among our grassroots members. 'As you know, previously it involved BN Sabah, and now it's PN, so this clarity helps us move forward and focusing on winning the support of the people, not chasing after alliances with other coalitions,' he said. He said there is no expectation that national leaders will fully understand Sabah's stance, but he made it clear this is the position (GRS moving forward) they hold today. Armizan who is also Member of Parliament for Papar said some from the peninsula only come to Sabah occasionally—once every three or four months — to talk about State issues and the needs of Sabah people. 'But we are here. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji and our local representatives and leaders are here all the time, consistently fighting for the rights and interests of Sabah.
