What new Kerala DGP Ravada Chandrasekhar means for CPI(M), poll-bound Kerala

India Today5 days ago
Ravada A. Chandrasekhar, the Intelligence Bureau special director chosen by the Pinarayi Vijayan government as Kerala's new director general of police (DGP), has had a history of sorts with the state's ruling party, the CPI(M).Back in November 1994, Chandrasekhar had, as assistant superintendent of police (Thalassery), been in the crosshairs of the CPI(M) after police—on the orders of the executive magistrate—fired on a huge group of party activists blocking then minister cooperation M.V. Raghavan. Five people were killed and several others injured, and flak came on Chandrasekhar. The Congress-led front was in power in Kerala at the time.advertisementChandrasekhar, a 1991 batch IPS officer, takes over from outgoing DGP Darvesh Saheb.Observers say the choice of the new DGP had become a predicament of sorts for the Vijayan government, which faces assembly elections next year. The inclination, it seems, was to go for additional DGP M.R. Ajithkumar, an officer considered to enjoy the government's confidence.
However, Ajithkumar's name did not feature in the shortlist of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Besides Chandrasekhar, the other two candidates were Nitin Agarwal, road safety commissioner of Kerala, and Yogesh Gupta, director general of Kerala Fire and Rescue Services.Agarwal appears to have lost the race owing to his long service at the BJP-ruled Centre whereas Gupta had taken a firm stand on corruption allegations against P.P. Divya, the CPI(M) leader facing the accusation of abetting the suicide by death of Kannur deputy collector Naveen Babu last year. Gupta—at the time director (vigilance)—had ordered a probe against Divya for alleged disproportionate assets.advertisementAsked what he made of the Vijayan government's choice, CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan Master matter-of-factly told INDIA TODAY: 'The Left government has selected the new DGP based on the list given by the UPSC.'CPI(M) sources said a section of party leaders, including a state committee member, had expressed reservations over Chandrasekhar's appointment. But party circles had played them down. Govindan Master too emphasised that controversies not be raised over the appointment. The government has issued a circular handing over the DGP's charge to additional DGP (law and order) H. Venkatesh till the time the new police chief takes over. How does the police fraternity see the appointment? 'I would rate Ravada Chandrasekhar as a very professional police officer. The controversies over the Kuthuparamba police firing case have nothing to do with his integrity. As assistant superintendent of police, he had assumed the post just two days before and rushed to the site when the situation turned violent. The government suspended him but the high court acquitted him of all charges. During his service, Chandrasekhar remained an outstanding officer,' said A. Hemachandran, a former Kerala DGP, in a conversation with INDIA TODAY.Chandrasekhar had met Vijayan on June 20 in Thiruvananthapuram in the run-up to his appointment. He will retire on July 31 next year, which means he will be the police chief in charge of law and order when the state goes to polls.advertisementAs for Agrawal, he too retires on July 31, 2026 while Gupta has a term till April 30, 2030. Gupta's name is being considered for a central posting, but the state government has not given him an integrity certificate. The certificate is issued by the state government to confirm that no vigilance case is pending against the officer—a mandatory recommendation for appointment to a senior post.Subscribe to India Today Magazine- Ends

Yogi Adityanath Assured Class 7 Girl Fee Waiver. School Said Not Possible

Gorakhpur (UP): A Class 7 girl's appeal for financial support that can help fulfill her dream of becoming an IAS officer has snowballed into a political row in Uttar Pradesh. Pankhuri Tripathi's family suffered a major setback after her father, Rajiv Kumar Tripathi, sustained a critical leg injury in an accident and had to quit his job. The family sought help from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who assured them that her education wouldn't face obstacles. The Class 7 student says the school management has refused to pardon her fees and stressed that there is no such provision. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has now targeted the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh and offered to support the girl's education. Pankhuri's family hopes the Chief Minister will intervene and help her work towards fulfilling her dream. Pankhuri Tripathi studies at Saraswati Shishu Mandir in Gorakhpur's Pakkibag. The school, run by RSS education wing Vidya Bharati, charges Class 7 students a monthly fee of Rs 1,650. Pankhuri has dues of about Rs 18,000. "I had gone to the Chief Minister with a fee pardon request. He gave me a chocolate and assured me that it would be done. But when I went to school with my father, they misbehaved with us. We were told that the fee couldn't be pardoned. They said that if more parents sought a fee pardon, the school wouldn't be able to function. They said they have to pay teachers," she said. "My father broke down. No one had ever spoken to him like this. But I trust that the Chief Minister will not let my dream shatter and I will work hard and become an IAS officer," Pankhuri said. Gorakhpur is a stronghold of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He is the head priest of the Gorakhnath Math and served as Gorakhpur MP five times before taking over as the state's Chief Minister. Akhilesh Yadav, who heads the state's main Opposition Samajwadi Party, has now taken a swipe at the ruling party over Pankhuri's remarks. "We promise that her education won't stop. This is the truth of the BJP's fake slogans of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao'. We urged the BJP not to lie to children," Mr Yadav said in a post on X. Pankhuri's father Rajiv Tripathi said he worked outside the state before the Covid pandemic. "When I was at home during the pandemic, I slipped off the terrace and suffered a leg injury. I lost my job. Both my children study in English-medium schools. My son studies in Class 12, and my daughter is in Class 7. I was struggling to pay their fee and my daughter did not go to school after February. It is my son's last year in school, so I did not want to disrupt his education. I thought of taking my daughter out of school for a year. Then it struck me that I could approach the Chief Minister for help. We went to Janata Durbar on July 1 and sought his help. He immediately asked officials to ensure that my daughter's education does not stop," he said. "The school administration, however, said there is no such provision. They said that if every parent manages to get a fee pardon, the school will shut down. They misbehaved with us. When I saw my daughter crying, I broke down too," he added. On hearing that Mr Yadav had tweeted about the issue and offered help, Mr Tripathi said, "He has tweeted. But we are associated with the Math and Maharaj ji (referring to Yogi Adityanath) and we believe he would ensure my daughter's education." NDTV reached out to the school administration, but they refused to comment on the matter. An education department official said the state government has written to the school administration and a positive response is expected shortly.

BJP demands apology from Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah over remarks linking vaccines to heart attacks

The BJP on Sunday mounted a sharp attack on Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, demanding an unconditional apology over his recent comments linking a rise in cardiac arrests, particularly in Hassan district, to COVID-19 vaccination. The demand comes after an expert committee, appointed by the state government itself, found no scientific evidence to support such a link. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Also Read - Ganesh idol desecrated in Karnataka's Shivamogga: BJP alleges rising anti-Hindu acts under Congress rule Union Minister Pralhad Joshi led the charge, calling Siddaramaiah's remarks 'irresponsible and politically motivated.' Addressing the media in Hubballi, Joshi said, 'Premier institutions like ICMR, NCDC, and AIIMS-Delhi have already clarified that COVID-19 vaccines do not cause heart attacks. Now, the Karnataka government's own expert panel, led by Dr Ravindranath of the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, has confirmed the same. Will the Chief Minister apologise now?' Joshi alleged that Siddaramaiah's statements were part of a broader attempt to discredit vaccines developed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure. 'They thought the pandemic would work against the Prime Minister, but he managed the crisis with care and compassion. The vaccine rollout saved millions, and now the opposition is resorting to misinformation,' he said. Why did the controversy begin? The controversy stems from Siddaramaiah's recent remarks suggesting a connection between the sudden spike in heart attacks in Hassan and the COVID-19 vaccination drive. He had also questioned the speed at which the vaccines were approved, comments that drew criticism from scientists, political opponents, and industry leaders, including Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw. In its findings, the committee stated that there was no causal link between COVID-19 vaccination and sudden cardiac deaths. Instead, it described the issue as multifactorial, pointing to behavioural, genetic, and environmental risk factors. The Jayadeva Institute's report echoed findings from global studies, reaffirming that vaccination offers long-term protection against cardiac events, rather than causing them. BJP spokesperson and former minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan also slammed Siddaramaiah, accusing him of spreading unverified claims that could erode public trust in vaccines. 'The Chief Minister made a reckless statement without citing any scientific evidence. His comments undermine the credibility of Indian-made vaccines. He owes an apology to the people of Karnataka,' Narayan said.

Kharge slams BJP over Bihar electoral roll revision, alleges voter suppression

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the BJP on Sunday of conspiring to deprive the people of Bihar of their voter rights through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and said the voters of the state would teach the saffron party a lesson for its attack on democracy and the Constitution. He cited a new advertisement issued by the Election Commission (EC), urging the voters of Bihar to only fill a form under the SIR, and alleged that "when people rise, BJP backtracks". "With the support of the Election Commission, the master plan that the BJP had devised to deprive crores of people in Bihar of their voting rights now seems to be ensnaring the BJP itself," Kharge alleged in a post in Hindi on X. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Best Method for a Flat Stomach After 50 (It's Genius!) Lulutox Undo He said from the very first day, the Congress has been raising its voice against the SIR. "Why are people who have been voting election after election being asked to show their documents for voting? Live Events "Forcibly depriving the poor, weak, deprived, Dalits, oppressed and backward people of their voting rights is the conspiracy of the BJP-RSS," he alleged. The Congress chief claimed that nearly eight crore people will suffer because of the SIR. "The responsibility to correct the voter list lies with the EC, not the public. "When the pressure from the opposition, the public and civil society increased, the Election Commission hurriedly published these advertisements today, which state that now only a form needs to be filled and showing documents is not necessary," he claimed. "This is part of the BJP's tactic to mislead and confuse the public. The truth is that the BJP has decided it will crush democracy at all costs. But when faced with public opposition, it cleverly takes a step back," the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha alleged. Noting that Bihar is the birthplace of democracy, Kharge said the people of the state will surely respond to the Bharatiya Janata Party 's (BJP) attack on democracy and the Constitution in the upcoming Assembly election.
