EU threatens US with retaliatory measures over tariffs
Washington – Saba: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned on Saturday of the possibility of retaliatory measures against the United States over its imposition of new tariffs on European goods. According to the Novosti news agency, Ursula von der Leyen said that "the European Union has threatened to impose countermeasures against the United States if a trade agreement is not reached between the two parties by August 1," following US President Donald Trump's decision to impose 30 percent tariffs on all EU imports. Von der Leyen added, "We will take all necessary steps to protect the interests of the European Union, including proportionate countermeasures if necessary." US President Donald Trump announced earlier on Saturday that the United States would impose a 30 percent tariff on European Union goods, effective August 1. He added in a post on the Truth Social platform that if the European Union raises its tariffs on American goods, the United States will respond by raising its tariffs by the same percentage. Amid trade tensions, the European Commission President indicated that the European Union will expand its partnerships with other countries, warning of the risks threatening key transatlantic supply chains due to tariffs.
