610 antiquities retrieved from six countries including US during 2020-24: Govt
Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat shared this information in a written reply to a question on whether the government has conducted any survey or study regarding theft of Indian artefacts in the last five years; and details of the total number of artefacts recovered, still missing and unaccounted for over the same period.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) maintains up-to-date data of theft cases in respect of protected monuments, sites and museums under its jurisdiction, he said.
On retrieval of antiquities from abroad, according to the data shared by him, in 2020, three artefacts were brought back from Australia and five from the UK.
In 2021, 157 antiquities were brought back from the US and one each from Canada and the UK.
In 2023 and 2024, the figures stood at 105 (the US) and 297 (the US) respectively.
For the US, the total number of retrieved antiquities for 2020-24 stood at 559, and for Australia, the corresponding figures stood at 34.
The total number spanning the six countries — the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, Italy and Thailand — for 2020-24 stands at 610.
In response to another query, Shekhawat said, a total of 655 antiquities have been retrieved from foreign countries since 1976. PTI KND AMJ AMJ

British Sikh man, 30, stabbed to death in London; suspect charged with murder
The UK police believes that a British Sikh man was stabbed to death last week in London allegedly by people known to each other, reported PTI. Met's Specialist Crime North unit's Detective Chief Inspector said that the detectives believe the stabbing to be an 'isolated incident'.(Representational Photo/AFP) The victim was officially identified last week on Thursday as 30-year-old Gurmuk Singh, alias Gary. He reportedly died in Felbrigge Road in East London's Ilford on Wednesday, July 23. 'Police were called by the London Ambulance Service to reports of an altercation at a residential address…Officers attended as Gary was treated for stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of the paramedics, he sadly died at the scene,' said the Met Police statement. According to the police, a 27-year-old suspect, identified as Amardeep Singh, has been arrested. He has also been charged with one count of murder and is due to be presented at a court in London's Old Bailey for trial on January 5, 2026. Till then, he will stay in custody. Apart from Amardeep, other people have also been arrested in connection with the stabbing but have been released on bail till October as cops continue to probe the case. Those arrested include a 29-year-old man and three women aged 29, 30 and 54. 'Well-loved man' Gary's family described him as a 'well-loved man' and a 'social butterfly', adding that he will be deeply missed. The family said in a statement, released by the police, 'Gary was a well-loved man who had a remarkable ability to connect with everyone he met.' 'A true social butterfly, nothing brought him more joy than being surrounded by his family. Gary will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in our hearts forever,' they added. An inquest has been opened and subsequently adjourned as the probe into the stabbing is ongoing. Met's Specialist Crime North unit's Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke said that the detectives believe the stabbing to be an 'isolated incident'. 'An incident of this nature sends shockwaves throughout the local area and we understand the direct impact on the community. People can expect to see an uptick in police presence while officers conduct initial investigations. 4-5 from mob entered home of Kargil War veteran's kin in Pune, demanded Indian citizenship proof, say police
Pune: Police on Thursday said at least four-five people, who were part of a crowd that gathered outside the residence of a Kargil War veteran's family in the city's Chandannagar area on July 26 night, forcibly entered the home, verbally abused his kin and demanded proof of their Indian citizenship. The police had earlier claimed that nobody entered the residence of the war veteran's family and that only policemen went to verify information about the presence of suspected Bangladeshi nationals in the area. Seema Dhakane, senior police inspector (Chandannagar) told TOI that a suo motu FIR for unlawful assembly was registered on Wednesday evening. "But based on the fresh statements of the war veterans' family members, additional sections of law were invoked late in the night. The police are yet to make any arrest," she said. Some members of the family were taken to the Chandannagar police station, allegedly around midnight, and released on the condition that they would return to the police station the following day. The Chandannagar police had initially booked six identified individuals and four-five of their accomplices for allegedly "indulging in objectionable activities and raising religious slogans" outside the residence of Shaikh's family. Shaikh served in the Indian Army's 269 Engineering Regiment before retiring in 2000. Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar on Wednesday met members of Shaikh's family, assured them of strict action and said relevant sections of law would be invoked in the existing FIR based on their fresh statements. After this, the police also invoked sections 329 (2) [house trespassing], 115 (2) [voluntarily causing hurt], and 353 (2) [public mischief] of BNS against the accused. A constable from the Chandannagar police station lodged a case in connection with the incident. Hakimuddin Shaikh's uncles, Shaikh Moinuddin and Mohammad Salim, had also served in the Army and fought for the country in the 1965 and 1971 wars. Originally from Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, the family had moved to Pune in 1960 for employment. Though Moinuddin and Hakimuddin returned to their hometown, their other kin stayed back in Pune.

Delhi High Court Judge Recuses From Hearing Sanjay Bhandari's Plea Challenging 'Fugitive Offender' Tag
New Delhi: A judge of the Delhi High Court on Thursday recused himself from hearing a plea by UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari challenging a trial court's order declaring him a "fugitive economic offender". Justice Girish Kathpalia, who was dictating the order and fixing the hearing for Friday on the maintainability of the plea, transferred the matter to another bench when the counsel for Bhandari and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) could not come to a consensus on the date of hearing. The case is listed before the trial court on August 2. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Bhandari, insisted that the matter be heard today itself as he was not available on Thursday, or it be heard after some days till when the court should direct the ED not to confiscate Bhandari's assets. However, ED's counsel was of the view that the court should not pass any interim order without hearing the agency's submissions, as he had preliminary objection on the maintainability of the plea and that it be heard on Friday itself. As the court was dictating the order, Sibal said, "Why don't you (ED counsel) just get an order in your favour now and get it all done. Your lordship may pass any order, let it (assets) be confiscated, it does not matter." In reply, ED's lawyer Zoheb Hussain said this was "extremely unfair". As both the counsels remained adamant, the judge said it cannot hear the matter in this manner, stating, "List before some other bench subject to orders of the judge in-charge of the criminal side tomorrow itself at 10:30 am." The trial court on July 5 declared Bhandari a "fugitive economic offender" on a plea by the ED, an order that will allow the agency to confiscate all his assets worth crores of rupees. District Judge (Tis Hazari) Sanjeev Aggarwal said in his order the court was satisfied that "Sanjay Bhandari, S/o Late R K Bhandari, is a fugitive economic offender under Section 12(1) of the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, 2018, and is declared as such under the above provision(s) of the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, 2018". The order came as a shot in the arm for the federal probe agency, as it will now be able to confiscate assets worth crores of rupees of Bhandari, whose chances to come to India have been virtually nullified after a UK court recently ruled against his extradition. Bhandari's legal team, while opposing the ED's move to get him declared a fugitive offender, claimed that its "client's stay could not be called illegal in the UK as he has a legal right to reside in the UK and the government of India is bound by the judgment of the UK court... Bhandari is legally living there, and declaring him a 'fugitive' in that scenario is legally wrong". The trial court had said the "extradition attempt may have failed, but it will not make the accused an angel or immune from the prosecution for the violation of Indian laws". Bhandari (63) fled to London in 2016, soon after the Income-Tax (I-T) Department raided him in Delhi. The ED filed a criminal case against Bhandari and others under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in February 2017, taking cognisance of an I-T chargesheet filed against him under the anti-black money law of 2015. The court said when an accused chooses not to return to India, he cannot take the plea of avoiding all the legal consequences, including that of Section 14 of the FEO Act. "In any case, those who play with fire should be known to be aware of its consequences," it said. The court held that the undisclosed foreign income or assets of Bhandari were worth Rs 655 crore and the total tax evaded by him, including penalty and interest, was Rs 196 crore. The ED filed its first chargesheet against Bhandari in 2020. The agency is probing Bhandari's links with Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The ED filed a supplementary chargesheet in the case in 2023, alleging that Bhandari "acquired" the 12, Bryanston Square house in London in 2009 and got it renovated "as per the directions of Robert Vadra and the funds for renovation were provided by Robert Vadra". Vadra has denied owning any London property directly or indirectly, and termed the charges a "political witch-hunt" against him, claiming that he is being "hounded and harassed" to subserve political ends. Bhandari, who was a resident in India for tax purposes in 2015, is also accused of concealing overseas assets using backdated documents, benefitting from the assets not declared to Indian tax authorities, and then falsely informing the authorities that he did not possess any overseas assets. He, however, has denied the allegations. Bhandari's assets worth about Rs 21 crore have been attached by the ED under PMLA.
