South Korea investigators seek to arrest Yoon

Observera day ago
SEOUL: South Korean prosecutors requested a new arrest warrant on Sunday to detain former president Yoon Suk Yeol, after questioning him twice, including a session that lasted over nine hours. "Today, the special counsel filed a request for a detention warrant with the Seoul Central District Court for former president Yoon Suk Yeol on charges including abuse of power and obstruction of special official duties," Prosecutor Park Ji-young, a member of the counsel, told reporters.
Park said that Yoon had also been charged with "falsification of official documents" over his martial law declaration. "The warrant outlines why a detention is deemed necessary, but I cannot elaborate," said Park, adding the details will be discussed in court.
Yoon's legal team slammed the warrant as "excessive and unwarranted". "We have thoroughly refuted the allegations and demonstrated that, as a matter of law, no crime can be established," his legal team said in a statement. "The special counsel failed to present any objective evidence during the investigation, and even based on witness testimony, the charges do not hold," they added. — AFP

Hezbollah chief rejects surrender over Israeli threats

BEIRUT: Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said on Sunday that his group would not surrender or lay down its weapons in response to Israeli threats, despite pressure on the Lebanese militants to disarm. His speech came ahead of a visit expected on Monday by US envoy Thomas Barrack during which Lebanese authorities are due to respond to a request to disarm Hezbollah by year's end, according to a Lebanese official who spoke on condition of anonymity. "This (Israeli) threat will not make us accept surrender," Qassem said in a televised speech to thousands of his supporters in Beirut's southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold. Qassem, who succeeded longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah after an Israeli strike killed him in September, said the group's fighters would not abandon their arms and asserted that Israel's "aggression" must first stop. Israel has continued to strike Lebanon despite the November ceasefire, saying it is targeting Hezbollah sites and operatives and accusing Beirut of not doing enough to disarm the group. Lebanese authorities say they have been dismantling Hezbollah's military infrastructure in the south, near the Israeli border. — AFP

Macron to visit UK as Starmer eyes 'reset' with EU

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron is to begin a state visit to the United Kingdom on Tuesday, where he is set to address the British Parliament and co-chair a meeting on Ukraine as London seeks to strengthen its ties with Europe after Brexit. King Charles III has invited the French leader and his wife, Brigitte, on a three-day official visit during which Macron is to hold joint discussions with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the 37th Franco-British Summit on Thursday. Talks will focus on aid to Ukraine, joint efforts to halt illegal migration crossing the Channel, and strengthening defence cooperation between the two countries. "This is the first state visit to the United Kingdom by a European Union head of state since Brexit," the Elysee Palace said. "And, especially, the first since Prime Minister Starmer signalled what he called a 'reset' of relations between the United Kingdom and Europe,", it added. The king will host Macron and his wife for a state banquet at his Windsor Castle residence, west of London, where the couple will also stay. — AFP
