Watch: Rohit Sharma Fails To Score Big, Marcus Stoinis' Aggressive Celebration Viral In MI vs PBKS IPL 2025 Qualifier

NDTV01-06-2025
Rohit Sharma, a match after scoring 81 against Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 Eliminator, failed to strike big in the Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Rohit tried to flick PBKS all-rounder Marcus Stoinis but was caught at deep-backward square leg. The dismissal saw Stoinis thumping his chest aggressively. The celebration soon went viral. Meanwhile, a collective batting performance led by Suryakumar Yaadav and Tilak Varma took Mumbai Indians to a par 203 for six in a rain-delayed Indian Premier League Qualifier 2 contest against Punjab Kings on Sunday.

While no overs were lost as the contest got underway nearly two hours and 15 minutes after the scheduled start time, it was Mumbai Indians who emerged their noses slightly ahead after posting a competitive total.
Jonny Bairstow (38), Tilak Varma (44) and Suryakumar Yadav (44) kept Mumbai on track for a big total, while Naman Dhir 's late exploits (18-ball 33) pushed them past the 200-run mark.
Unlike the last game, Rohit Sharma (4) failed to capitalise on an early reprieve when Azmatullah Omarzai (2/43) dropped a tough chance running behind from short third off Kyle Jamieson (1/30) in the third over.
However, in the next over, Rohit failed to execute his trademark pull shot as he hit one straight to Vyshak Vijaykumar (1/30) at deep square leg off Marcus Stoinis.
Unfazed by the early blow, MI motored on to reach a scoring rate of 10 runs an over which they maintained through the course of the innings.
Tilak smacked his second ball down the ground for a six while Bairstow unleashed powerful strokes on either side of the wickets as they added 51 runs for the second wicket in a little under six overs to stage a robust recovery.
Punjab bowlers realised taking pace off the ball was a trick that they could work with — especially the slower short balls that the lanky Jamieson delivered well — but the batters' had enough class to counter that.

Youth ODI: Record-Breaking Vaibhav Suryavanshi Helps India Defeat England By Four Wickets

Last Updated: Suryavanshi, who had missed scoring fifties in the previous two matches, made his knock count by smashing the home side's bowling. Star India batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued his brilliant form by smacking a record nine sixes as India beat England by four wickets in a rain-shortened third U19 Youth ODI. Suryavanshi, who had missed scoring fifties in the previous two matches, made his knock count by smashing the home side's bowling, scoring 86 off just 31 balls as India chased down England's 268/6 in the 35th over. Suryavanshi's knock included six fours and nine maximums. His nine sixes set a new record for the highest number of maximums smacked by an Indian batter in a U19 ODI, going past the previous record of eight sixes held by Mandeep Singh. India experienced a slump in the middle overs, reduced to 199/6 in the 24th over. Bowling allrounder Kanishk Chouhan, who had taken three England wickets earlier, smacked an unbeaten 43 and shared an unbroken 75-run partnership with RS Ambrish to guide the side to a win against England. Suryavanshi attacked every bowler he faced, making his intentions clear when he struck Sebastian Morgan for two successive sixes in the third over. The latter faced more punishment in his subsequent over when Suryavanshi smacked two more sixes and a four. Suryavanshi has been brilliant since showing his talent in the Indian Premier League for the Rajasthan Royals. England's James Minto suffered in the sixth over, going for 23 runs, which included three sixes and a four. When Suryavanshi was dismissed, caught by Joseph Moores off right-arm pacer Alexander Wade, India had already wiped off 111 runs from the target in just the eighth over. After Suryavanshi's dismissal, India struggled in the middle overs before Kanishk and Ambrish played with caution to guide the side home with 33 deliveries to spare. Earlier, England captain Thomas Rew smashed an unbeaten 76 (44 balls) while opener Ben Dawkins struck form with a fine 62 as the hosts scored a competitive 268/6 after the game was delayed because of a wet outfield. Dawkins, a right-handed batter, provided England with the start they needed after being put into bat by the visitors on an overcast day. Dawkins and his left-handed opening partner, Isaac Mohammed (41 off 43 balls), showcased immense calm while playing the moving delivery, stitching together a 78-run stand at the top to give the hosts a solid start. Isaac's dismissal didn't slow down the flow of runs, as Ben Mayes played an almost run-a-ball knock, scoring 31 (32) to guide England to 133/2 by the 22nd over. The 55-run stand between Dawkins and Mayes gave the home side momentum, which captain Rew later capitalised on by launching into the Indian bowling attack with some cracking shots that left the visitors searching for ideas. Brief scores: England U-19: 174 all out in 42.2 overs (Isaac Mohammed 41, BJ Dawkins 62, Ben Mayes 31, Thomas Rew 76 not out, Ralphie Albert 21; Kanishk Chouhan 3/30) lost to India U-19: 274 for 6 in 34.3 overs (Vaibhav Suryavanshi 86, Vihaan Malhotra 46, Rahul Kumar 27, Kanishk Chouhan 43 not out, RS Ambrish 31 not out; Alexander Wade 2/58). Bengaluru Stampede: BCCI Ombudsman directs RCB, KSCA to file written replies to 'gross negligence' complaint

New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Ombudsman Justice (Retd) Arun Mishra has directed the Indian Premier League 2025 winners Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to file their respective written replies on the complaint alleging gross negligence and violation of safety norms by the franchise during the victory celebration in Bengaluru last month which led to a stampede. On June 4, 11 people died, over 50 were injured during the stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB's victory celebrations as Police were short of means to control the increasing crowd. The directives from the ombudsman come after senior IPS officer Vikash Kumar, who was among four suspended by the state government, challenged the decision. The CAT quashed the government order, saying the cop should be reinstated. RCB and KSCA have four weeks to file their written replies to the complaint. 'Looking at the gravity of the incident, it is considered appropriate that the Karnataka Cricket Association, as well as the concerned franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore, be asked to submit their written replies to the complaint. Let the Karnataka Cricket Association and the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise file their respective written replies to the complaint within four weeks, with a copy to the complainant as well,' Justice Mishra wrote in his directive. There have been recent speculations about the franchise looking for a sale, allegedly in an attempt to distance itself from facing the possible consequences. While considering this possibility, the Ombudsman in the directive stated that the status quo should be maintained in the meantime. 'Apprehension has been expressed that the franchise may be attempting to distance itself from accountability and possibly offload ownership to avoid potential consequences. In the meantime, the status quo is to be maintained,' it stated. The CAT order stated that neither the franchise nor its event management firm, S DNA Entertainment Network Private Limited, sought any permissions to conduct the title celebration parade at the stadium. CAT also pointed out that for the organisation of such events, an application has to be made a week before under the Licensing and Controlling of Assemblies and Public Procession (Bengaluru city) order, 2009. However, neither RCB nor DNA did so. The cops came under immense burden as the state government organised a 'felicitation' for players. The order said, 'Therefore, prima facie it appears that RCB is responsible for the gathering of about three to five lakh people.' 'RCB did not take the appropriate permission or consent from the Police. Suddenly, they posted on social media platforms and as a result of aforesaid information the public were gathered. Because of the shortage of time on 04.06.2025, the Police was unable to do the appropriate arrangements. Sufficient time was not given to the Police. Suddenly, RCB created the aforesaid type of nuisance without any prior permission,' it added. Last month, following the incident, the BCCI announced that during the 28th Apex Council meeting, a committee was constituted to formulate comprehensive guidelines aimed at preventing such occurrences in the future. The committee features: Devajit Saikia (Chairperson), Prabhtej Singh Bhatia (BCCI Treasurer) and Rajeev Shukla (BCCI vice-president). (ANI)

‘Purest of batters, purest of bowlers': Amanjot shines in 2nd T20I win

Chandigarh: Ahead of the England tour, the Indian women's team had primarily looked at Amanjot Kaur in a bowling role in white-ball cricket. But on Tuesday night, in the second T20I against England at Bristol, she proved her coach Nagesh Gupta's assessment of her as a two-dimensional cricketer. India's Amanjot Kaur in action. (Reuters) The 24-year-old hit an impressive unbeaten 40-ball 63 batting at No.5, the joint top score. And coming on to bowl, Amanjot first grabbed the all-important wicket of the in-form England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt. However, it was with the bat that she truly instilled a level of confidence that was long missing in the Indian team. A seam-bowling all-rounder is a luxury for any team and with India preparing for the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup next year, India would love to add that kind of luxury to the talent they can call upon. Amanjot made sure that she stuck to her job and partnered with joint top-scorer Jemimah Rodrigues, raising 93 runs for the fourth wicket. She then stitched together an unbeaten 57 with Richa Ghosh (32*) as India recorded 181/4 – the second-highest women's T20I total at Bristol. She completed her maiden T20I half-century off 35 balls. During the rebuilding job, Amanjot also showed that she can accelerate the innings with clean stroke play in the death overs as well. India scored 117 runs in the last 10 overs after the early jolts when they lost Shafali Verma (3), Smriti Mandhana (13) and Harmanpreet Kaur (1), reducing India to 31/3 within the Powerplay phase. Jemimah underlined her experience, smashing a 41-ball 63 to revive the Indian innings. She went after Linsey Smith (0/37) and Em Arlott (1/43) to inflict further damage. 'Credit goes to Jemi for pacing her innings so well. She told me to stay at the wicket for a longer time and then we wanted to take it deep. Afterwards, Richa finished the innings well,' Amanjot said after the game. India beat England by 24 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. Harleen Deol, who scored 43 off 23 balls in the first match, was left out with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur returning after sitting out the Trent Bridge game. Amanjot is enjoying her comeback into the Indian team. She had suffered a hand and back injury in 2024, forcing her to miss the T20 World Cup as well as the domestic season. But she made use of the Women's Premier League stint with Mumbai Indians to earn her India call-up. Speaking on her maiden T20 half-century and the all-rounder tag, Amanjot said, 'It is the first of many. I am now being called an all-rounder, but I would like to believe that I am the purest of the bowlers and the purest of the batters. I want to do it more for India.' Her innings included nine fours, the same number hit by Jemimah. Richa Ghosh remained unbeaten on 32. England once again failed to mount a serious chase as they were restricted to 157/7. Tammy Beaumont top-scored with 54 and Amy Jones (32) Sophie Ecclestone (35) contributing, but it could not prevent a 24-run defeat.
