Luke Littler hammers Ryan Searle on World Matchplay debut

Yahooa day ago
Luke Littler stormed through to the second round of his debut World Matchplay with a 10-2 rout of Ryan Searle.
Littler, the second seed on his first appearance at Blackpool's Winter Gardens, looked like a man in a hurry as he jumped out to a 6-0 lead.
And although Searle was able to get on the board late on, there was never going to be any way back against Littler, who averaged nearly 109.
'I was well up for tonight,' Littler said on Sky Sports. 'I wanted that win, to get that winning feeling and I've done it in some standard.'
After revealing earlier this week he had failed his driving theory test for a fourth time, Littler said he has not been doing his homework for that as he has been keeping his focus on his game, adding: 'I've got a competition to focus on.'
'I've been practising so much,' he said. 'Obviously I've not put much on social media but I've been at home putting the hours in, hours and hours, and I'm glad it's paid off tonight.'
World number four Stephen Bunting survived a dogfight with Ryan Joyce to advance with a 10-8 victory.
Joyce came from 8-4 down to level the contest at 8-8 when Bunting appeared to be distracted while looking to close out from 45, and was then a whisker away from going 9-8 up as he narrowly missed double five.
Bunting responded with a 180 and then checked out from 41 to secure his progress, but could not hide his frustration.
'I'm so disappointed,' he said. 'We had a battle last year. Thankfully I've not gone the distance this year and I've saved a bit of energy for the next round. We go on, we're in the next round.'
Fifth seed Jonny Clayton survived a tough contest against Martin Schindler to prevail 10-7, despite the German putting up better numbers for much of the contest.
Clayton's average was 99.60 compared to Schindler's 103.45 but the Welshman picked his moments to advance.
'I am here, I want to win this tournament,' Clayton said. 'Hopefully it is going to be my week. I love it when I pass the first round.'
Earlier 13th seed Gary Anderson saw off Luke Woodhouse 10-5 despite a spectacular 167 checkout from the Englishman.
Four seeds were sent home during Sunday's afternoon session as further shocks followed Saturday's exits of top seed Luke Humphries and eighth seed Nathan Aspinall.
Seventh seed Damon Heta fell to Andrew Gilding in a contest that went to overtime, with Gilding eventually prevailing 12-10 after a late fightback came to nothing for Heta.
Gilding advances to face Dirk van Duijvenbode, who saw off 10th seed Rob Cross 10-8 after rallying from 6-2 down in a remarkable contest.
Jermaine Wattimena beat 15th seed Peter Wright 10-8 while Mike De Decker beat 12th seed Dave Chisnall 10-7.

It's Tuesday, July 22 and the Tigers (60-41) are in Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates (40-61). Casey Mize is slated to take the mound for Detroit against Mitch Keller for Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh took Game 1 of the series, 3-0 to break a three-game losing streak. Detroit is 1-3 since the break, like Pittsburgh, but the Tigers have scored three runs in four games compared to the Buccos' who scored 10. Let's dive into the matchup and find a sweat or two. Expert picks & predictions for tonight's game between the Tigers and the Pirates Rotoworld Best Bet Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) likes Paul Skenes to win NL CY Young over Zack Wheeler: "Entering the All-Star break, Skenes had a 1.19 ERA in career wins compared to a 2.39 ERA in losses or non-decisions, so either way, he hasn't been the Buccos' problem since he arrived. This year alone, Skenes has allowed 27 runs over 20 starts and the Pirates have lost 11 of those 20 games! Pittsburgh's offense has scored the fewest runs in not just the NL, but all of baseball — even the Rockies and White Sox. For more context, the Phillies have scored 112 more runs than the Pirates in one less game. Both Skenes and Wheeler will be dominant in the second-half, I have no doubts, but Skenes could post a sub 2.00 ERA this season (was doing so through 19 starts), sub .200 OBA, and still have a losing record, which on surface level makes no sense. Despite how it looks or sounds, I think what Skenes is doing weighs more impressive, challenging, and deserving than what Wheeler is doing." Please bet responsibly. Arsenal on verge of total agreement for Viktor Gyokeres transfer from Sporting CP

Arsenal and Sporting CP are on the verge of a total agreement for the transfer of Viktor Gyokeres. A deal worth €63.5million (£54.8m; $74.2m) plus €10m (£8.6m; $11.7m) of future bonuses had already been struck in principle. But issues remained over the nature and achievability of those contingency payments, which caused a delay in the proposed move being finalised. Advertisement Talks to resolve that are now at an extremely advanced stage, with a conclusion imminent. Only finishing touches and some minor tweaks are required before the switch can be completed. Gyokeres was focused only on joining Arsenal and, despite late interest from elsewhere, he did not consider any other team. The 27-year-old Sweden international's agent also waived his commission to help the switch, while a contract until June 2030 has been prepared. Frederico Varandas, the president of the Portuguese club, said on July 12 that Gyokeres would be issued a 'heavy fine' and told to apologise to his Sporting team-mates after the Swede missed the deadline to report for pre-season training amid Arsenal's approach. Gyokeres has been one of Europe's most in-demand strikers this summer after scoring 54 goals in 52 matches for Sporting last season, and was identified as Arsenal's preferred centre-forward target. Arsenal were without a recognised No. 9 for much of 2024-25 following injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, as they finished second in the Premier League for a third consecutive campaign, ten points behind champions Liverpool with 17 fewer goals scored. After leaving Brighton & Hove Albion for around £1m to Coventry City in 2021, Gyokeres emerged a key figure for the Championship side before his £17m move to Sporting in 2023. He recorded 97 goals and 28 assists for the Portuguese club, helping them to consecutive league titles and the Taca de Portugal last season. Arsenal have been active in their first summer transfer window led by new sporting director Andrea Berta. Midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard have joined from Real Sociedad and Brentford respectively, while goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and winger Noni Madueke have arrived from Chelsea. Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera is set to join up with his new team-mates in Singapore after finalising his move from Spain. Gyokeres made his Sweden debut aged 20 and has played 26 games at international level, scoring 15 goals. Analysis by data writer Thom Harris There's quite an obvious appeal to Gyokeres when flicking through the numbers; his 68 league goals since joining Sporting two summers ago is well over double that of any other player in Portugal throughout that time, a brutal finisher, able to generate freakish power on either side. Advertisement But there's more to the Swede than just lasered shots and penalty-box poaching — Gyokeres is a prodigious runner, direct, explosive, and with the physical capacity to repeat those movements at high intensity. As we can see from his SkillCorner run profile below — comparing his off-ball work to strikers across Europe's top seven leagues — he's often targeting the space in-behind, or pulling wide to run the channels, happy to take a defender out wide before powering inside and getting his shot away. The Premier League, of course, is a different proposition, and while Gyokeres clearly has the physical capabilities to battle it out with the strongest of centre-backs, he may not be afforded quite as much space to attack for a side such as Arsenal, often pass-heavy and patient in their build-up. He also isn't prolific in the air, without a single headed goal in league football last season. But the Swede is a handful, a guaranteed goalscorer, a relentless runner, and a ruthless No. 9 who can turn half-chances into goals. If Premier League teams thought they had figured out Arteta's Arsenal, this signing would add a new dimension. (Top image: Pedro Loureiro/Eurasia)

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka has reached an agreement with promoted Premier League side Sunderland, The Athletic online portal reported on Tuesday.
