PTKL2040 Spurs Sustainable Transportation, Transforms Urban Living

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- Enjoying a more efficient and comfortable living space -- complete with improved infrastructure, sustainable public transport, and a vibrant social environment -- is the future vision outlined by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) under the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (PTKL2040).
In the next 15 years, city dwellers in the heart of the metropolis can expect a lifestyle where working, commuting, and relaxing all happen within walking distance, thanks to comprehensive urban planning aimed at promoting sustainable and inclusive development.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif said PTKL2040 is focused on developing an integrated, people-oriented, and efficient public transportation system, making public transit the preferred mode of movement for city residents by 2040.
'This vision is further strengthened by the implementation of the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Concept, which will reshape the character of areas surrounding transit hubs, influencing land use, development intensity, and mobility patterns,' she said.
She added that TOD initiatives are designed to ensure seamless access to workplaces, homes, and community facilities while enabling smooth integration across multiple modes of transport.
"It also involves the harmonisation of ticketing and payment systems across Light Rail Transit (LRT), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), buses and alternative transport (such as e-scooters) through a single digital platform, in addition to the creation of multimodal integration hubs in strategic areas," she told Bernama.
In line with efforts to promote active mobility, Maimunah said the capital would also be developed as a pedestrian-friendly city with features such as shaded walkways, lighting, and accessibility for wheelchairs and other mobility aids.
'To create a truly walkable city, we will expand Car-Free Zones in the city centre and heritage areas, as well as design areas around TODs with human-scale principles to make foot travel between buildings, parks and stations intuitive and safe,' she added.

Preserve national unity and peace for independence, urges Ewon
PENAMPANG: Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick has called on Malaysians, particularly in Sabah, to uphold the true meaning of independence by preserving unity, well-being, and peace. He emphasised that harmony and stability are crucial for sustainable national development and sovereignty. 'This all starts with cooperation, unity, and harmony because if the people are at odds with one another, unable to cooperate or be in harmony, how can national sovereignty be defended?' Ewon said after launching the Sabah Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2025 convoy. The event, organised by the Sabah Information Department, involves 20 vehicles and 60 participants covering 2,500 kilometres across 75 locations in 20 days. The convoy began in Penampang and will conclude in Tuaran on Aug 23. Ewon encouraged Sabahans to join the 'One House, One Jalur Gemilang' initiative by displaying the national flag at their homes. He also highlighted the relevance of this year's National Day theme, 'Malaysia MADANI, Rakyat Disantuni,' aligning it with the 13th Malaysia Plan's goals of uplifting the people's dignity. 'I hope this theme reaches the grassroots. KUALA LUMPUR: A unified strategy between corridor authorities (PBK) and regional development agencies (LKW) is crucial for advancing rural development, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. As Minister of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW), Ahmad Zahid emphasised that structured planning aligned with local needs will drive sustainable progress. 'The synergy between PBK as strategic planners and LKW as implementers can foster high-impact partnerships,' he stated on his official Facebook page. Under the KKDW Strategic Plan 2026-2030, the government prioritises transforming rural economies via inclusive Rural Investment Hubs. These hubs aim to modernise rural identities by linking local potential with global markets. Key collaborations include Kedah's Integrated Economic and Community Centre (iCON) by KEDA, NCIA-PERDA's income initiative (IPR INTAN), and Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) along the East Coast supported by ECRL.
