Quinta Brunson Admits Criticism of Her ‘Abbott Elementary' Character Janine Was 'Tough'
Quinta Brunson's mockumentary Abbott Elementary has amassed a great deal of success, but the sitcom hasn't received straight A's across the board.
During a Tuesday appearance on Amy Poehler's Good Hang with Amy podcast, the Emmy winner opened up about the mixed response she's received about her character, second grade teacher Janine Teagues.

'I'll be real with you, [Janine is] a Black character,' Brunson told Poehler during their conversation. 'Black audiences have so few — still — representative characters on screen, and Black womanhood alone is so touchy.'
Brunson admitted that it 'became tough' for her when 'women were seeing Janine not present as they wanted her to,' noting she 'understand[s] it.' The Abbott star and creator added that when she first conceptualized the role of Janine, she 'wasn't really thinking about representation, but she became representation.'
'I think it's important for us to have characters who are more realistic than they are the absolute best representation of us,' Brunson said. 'I think it creates layers for us not only on TV but in the public eye.'
Brunson is a triple-threat, notably creating, writing and starring in Abbott since it debuted on ABC in 2021. The series spotlights a group of teachers working at the Philadelphia elementary school of the same name. Overall, Abbott has garnered a total of 24 Emmy nominations and four wins, including Brunson's 2023 win for outstanding actress in a comedy series and an additional win for its 2022 outstanding writing for a comedy series.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the comedian said she was 'very happy' about landing a fourth season of Abbott and that her team was in 'at a really chill place that I'm enjoying from a writing, creating and acting standpoint' following the joint actors and writers strike that shifted the show's third season.

Shipwrecked! 'Doctor Odyssey' canceled after 1 season on ABC
Doctor Odyssey has hit rough waters. Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that ABC's cruise ship medical drama is ending after one season. Created by Ryan Murphy, Doctor Odyssey starred Joshua Jackson, Phillipa Soo, and Sean Teale as a groundbreaking (for network TV) potential throuple as the medical staff on a cruise ship captained by Don Johnson. The news of the show's cancellation comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed by three members of the props crew against parent company Disney and producer 20th Television alleging sexual harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination, and negligent hiring, retention, and supervising practices. Earlier this month, Caroline Mack, Alicia Haverland, and Ava Steinbrenner alleged in the suit that Tyler Patton, hired by the companies to serve as Doctor Odyssey's assistant prop master under his wife, prop master Tammie Patton, subjected them to an "unchecked campaign of sexual harassment for months." Disney, 20th Television, and Tammie and Tyler Patton did not respond to EW's requests for comment at the time. According to the suit, Tyler and several other male props employees allegedly created "an unlawful den of sexual harassment and retaliation," which the suit claims Tammie Patton not only ignored but subjected them to retaliation for complaining about. The plaintiffs alleged that Disney and 20th TV ignored their complaints, and ultimately laid off the entire props department rather than investigate and take appropriate action. Mack, Haverland, and Steinbrenner are requesting a jury Odyssey's May 15 season 1 ender delivered closure for every character, making it a surprisingly satisfying series finale. Max (Jackson) and Avery (Soo) finally declared their love for each other, and committed to being together long-distance while following their individual dreams: Avery going to medical school, Max staying on the cruise ship. And Tristan (Teale) took not being chosen by Avery surprisingly well. The lack of drama and clear conclusion for the love triangle was the most shocking part of the episode. Plus, everyone survived the tsunami wave and earthquake aftershocks, the captain was able to keep his job despite not following orders during the crisis, and they all celebrated by dancing to "Despacito" on the beach. It's been over a month since Doctor Odyssey's first season reached its destination, with a somewhat disappointing finale airing on the 2025 TV schedule, but still no decision has come down from ABC regarding the future of the Ryan Murphy creation. Fans like myself have been desperate for an update, and Joshua Jackson — who brings the Dawson's Creek vibes at Dr. Max Bankman — finally came through with five words that honestly don't make me feel any better. Joshua Jackson attended the Motion Picture & Television Fund NextGen Annual Summer Party this past weekend, and as he walked the red carpet, someone can be heard commenting that they hope Doctor Odyssey would get renewed for Season 2. In the clip on X, you can see his face scrunch up, and he shrugs a couple of times before responding: They haven't told us yet. I don't love this response, because there was no confidence in the answer; it didn't sound to me like he was expecting to hear from Ryan Murphy any day now, and honestly, the facial expression read more like, 'not happening,' than 'prepare to set sail,' at least in my opinion. I'm just speculating here, but it seems like these actors — Joshua Jackson in addition to Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, Don Johnson and the rest of the cast and crew — would kind of need to know something about the state of their employment. High Potential Adds A Shameless Star For Season 2, But I'm More Excited About Kaitlin Olson's Behind-The-Scenes Promotion

News about some of the biggest primetime shows of the 2025 TV schedule can be pretty quiet during summer hiatus, but fans of ABC's breakout High Potential have not one but two reveals to celebrate. The hit drama has expanded the cast to include a former Shameless cast member, not too long after the surprising cancellation of his CBS show. At the same time, I'm ready to cheer for leading lady Kaitlin Olson getting a well-deserved promotion. Steve Howey, possibly best known for his eleven-season run as Kev Ball on Shameless, has joined the cast of High Potential as a Season 2 series regular, according to Deadline. The outlet reports that Howey will play Jesse Wagner, the new captain of the precinct with a savviness for politics, a knack for charm, and a talent for how to dress in expensive attire. While that sounds like the description of a character who might not get on well with Morgan (Kaitlin Olson), Wagner reportedly also likes to think outside of the action and wind up in the midst of action. I'm already curious to see what he makes of the unconventional partnership between Morgan and Karadec (Daniel Sunjata). Olson debunked the idea that she was playing towards a Morgan/Karadec romance, but that doesn't mean their bond – such as it is – won't seem particularly strange to a newcomer. I'm definitely on board with seeing what Steve Howey brings to the series. As the co-lead of CBS' much-hyped True Lies TV adaptation a couple years ago, I'd honestly expected him to be busy over on CBS for the foreseeable future. That show's surprising failure to grab ratings led to guest spots on NBC's Brilliant Minds and Happy's Place (for a fun Reba reunion). High Potential will be his first series regular gig since True Lies in 2023, and has the built-in success of the first season that he couldn't enjoy on CBS. In case you thought that Kaitlin Olson couldn't be promoted any further since she's the lead of the series, think again! The same Deadline report also reveals that the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star has been bumped up from producer to executive producer. Now, I'm not sure if that means any actual change in Olson's duties behind the scenes, but I love to see her get that recognition. After sixteen seasons and counting of Always Sunny episodes that list Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, and Charlie Day – a.k.a. the other three of the original four stars – as executive producers, it hits just right to see Olson getting that title for her very successful solo show. That's not to imply that she's not getting credit where credit's due for Always Sunny. She was one of the original four main stars (which was bumped up to five after Danny DeVito signed on) from the start, simply without having a heavy producing/writing hand behind the scenes. I just like seeing her get some added spotlight, especially since Morgan is actually a character to root for. Sweet Dee on Always Sunny… well, the point of that comedy isn't watching a group of heroes you want to cheer on, even when surrounded by children in the Abbott Elementary crossover! High Potential will give Olson her first executive producer credit since The Mick, which ran for two seasons on Fox from 2017-2018 as Olson's first network TV show as the top-billed star. This wasn't on the list of things she said she wants Season 2 to dive into, but great to see all the same. Unlike Doctor Odyssey on ABC, the network wasted no time in renewing High Potential for the 2025-2026 TV season, and it will return to primetime on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET after Dancing with the Stars. No premiere date has been set just yet, however, so you can always check out earlier episodes streaming with a Hulu subscription now. As for Always Sunny, Season 17 launches on FXX on Wednesday, July 9 at 9 p.m. ET.
