Airport revamp needed before VM2026

PETALING JAYA: With just months to go before the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign kicks off, tourism industry leaders are worried about first impressions – they say KLIA and other airports need serious facelifts.
Strangely enough, KLIA Terminal 1 – the bigger terminal – loses out to Terminal 2 when it comes to the range of food and services.
'At KLIA Terminal 1, the food in restaurants is often pre-prepared and simply reheated, which is not ideal. In contrast, Terminal 2 offers a much more diverse selection of dining options and shopping outlets,' says Malaysia Inbound Chinese Association president Datuk Angie Ng.
Terminal 2 also provides essential travel items, such as luggage locks or new suitcases, at reasonable prices.
Ng cited Singapore's Changi Airport as an example of what Malaysia should aspire to, with attractions like photo spots and a library for visitors, as well as a Food Republic outlet that offers a wide variety of freshly prepared meals.
'Unfortunately, the reheated food at our airport is unappealing,' she said.
Ng did, however, commend KLIA's efficient Immigration clearance process, although there is still some congestion and confusion at baggage claim areas, particularly in Terminal 2.
She said the airport needs more automated check-in machines and other state-of-the-art equipment.
'Other countries update facilities every two to three years. We should do the same, especially before VM 2026,' she said.
Ng also highlighted the need for more airline staff to help elderly passengers at Terminal 2.
Malaysia Inbound Tourism Association president Mint Leong echoed these concerns.
'KLIA gives the first impression for visitors. Malaysia Airports has already made improvements, such as offering complimentary drinks upon arrival and speeding up baggage collection and immigration clearance for Malaysians using the MyBorderPass App,' she said.
However, she said the aerotrain service needs to be up and running as soon as possible, as shuttle buses are inconvenient, especially for families.
'During peak travel times, waiting times for shuttle buses can be long,' she added.
Malaysian Tourism Federation president Datuk Tan Kok Liang noted that while the aerotrain was important, there is a broader need to ensure comprehensive infrastructure and service readiness.
'We hope the tourism industry and government can work together to achieve the goals set,' he said.
Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce president Loo Kok Seong said Malaysia's position as Asean chair this year would see more diplomatic and business visitors arriving.
'Given the growing number of exchanges, we must complete the aerotrain upgrades swiftly,' he said.
After a two-year hiatus, the KLIA Terminal 1 aerotrain is expected to resume operations soon. Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced a media test run next week to preview the service before it officially reopens.
In January, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani announced that the KLIA aerotrain, was expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2025.

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 90 per cent of revised insurance policies saw premium increases of less than 10 per cent as of April 30, the Finance Ministry said. The ministry said that over 200,000 policies had benefited from deferred premium adjustments, while more than 14,000 lapsed policies were reinstated. "The adjustment of Medical and Health Insurance and Takaful (MHIT) premium rates is symptomatic of the broader issue of medical cost inflation, which is the main contributing factor. "This inflation is driven by factors such as the rise in non-communicable diseases, investment costs in cutting-edge medical technologies and the largely unchecked cost of providing and utilising healthcare services," he said. It said this in a written reply to Pang Hok Liong, addressing concerns over the government's action on rising private medical insurance premiums, which many Malaysians can no longer afford, forcing some to cancel their policies. The ministry attributed the spike in MHIT premiums in 2024 to a surge in claims following the Covid-19 pandemic, compounded by a delay in premium rate adjustments by insurance and takaful operators during the pandemic. In a separate response to Sim Tze Tzin (PH–Bayan Baru), the ministry said stakeholder engagement is ongoing to consider all views on the development of a basic MHIT product under the Reset strategy, aimed at tackling medical cost inflation and expanding access to affordable coverage. "While the basic MHIT product aims to enable more individuals to obtain affordable insurance coverage, the decision to purchase this product remains voluntary and subject to individual choice. "As with other insurance and takaful products, policyholders may pay the basic MHIT premiums using any financial resources at their disposal," it said. While contributors may use their Employees Provident Fund Sejahtera Account, previously known as Account 2 to pay for premiums, the ministry said there is no compulsion to do so. It said the product's framework has yet to be finalised, with the concept expected to be completed by December and implementation targeted by end-2026.

On July 31, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a higher allocation of development expenditure for the construction sector to RM430bil. 'Although only RM430bil will be financed by the government, it is still 8% higher than the RM400bil expenditure allocated to the 12MP,' said Maybank Investment Bank Research (Maybank IB). On that note, Maybank IB said the higher spending plan could translate into a greater number and value of contracts to be awarded over the next five years. The research house noted that the previous increase in development spending under the 12MP, which was 54% higher than the 11MP, had already led to a meaningful rise in infrastructure job flows. 'Thus, we believe the 13MP is positive for the Malaysian construction industry,' it stated. While the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit 3 (KVMRT3) was not mentioned in the 13MP, ports appeared as the megaprojects under the new masterplan. This came as a surprise for Maybank IB, given the optimism surrounding the project just two weeks prior. It is worth noting that KVMRT1 and KVMRT2 yielded large-scale job opportunities valued at RM21bil and RM31bil, respectively. On a brighter note, capital expenditure for the Carey Island cargo port is estimated at RM28bil until 2060, while the Westports 2 expansion is RM12.6bil over the next 30 years. The Port of Tanjung Pelepas expansion is projected at RM4.9bil. 'We estimate that they could avail a whopping RM45.5bil worth of jobs,' said the research house, adding that potential beneficiaries of the port megaprojects include Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd , IJM Corp Bhd and WCT Holdings Bhd . Other than ports, the 13MP also outlines potential projects involving water, flood mitigation, industrial parks, highways, roads and hospitals. These sectors form part of broader national plans, including the Water Sector Transformation Plan 2040 and the Flood Mitigation Plan. 'In our view, potential beneficiaries which are likely to benefit the most from the aforementioned projects are IJM, Gamuda Bhd and WCT. These three companies have the experience and expertise to construct most of the aforementioned infrastructure assets. 'We also flag Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd as a prime beneficiary of continued infrastructure investments in Sarawak,' said Maybank IB.

THE Opposition has proposed the formation of a bipartisan committee to review the targets that were not met in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP). Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin ( pic ) said the committee, which would include representatives from the government and the Opposition, will also explore more effective implementation strategies for the success of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) and beyond. 'In the spirit of transparency and accountability, Tambun (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) and the Cabinet must 'walk the talk' and explain to the public what happened with the unachieved targets,' he said, adding that a special cross-party committee should be established to scrutinise the gaps in 12MP's achievements and to explore more effective implementation measures for the future. 'There is nothing wrong with the Prime Minister taking a step back to reflect, assess the achievements of 12MP, and ensure we all remain grounded before new figures are presented in the 13MP. 'The 13MP is a national effort to shape the future of the country. It is a five-year development plan meant for all Malaysians. 'Whoever governs in Putrajaya must accept the reality that this plan is not the exclusive domain of any single political party; it belongs to all of us,' said Hamzah, who is the Larut MP, during the debate on the 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. He also said the government needs to clarify all matters compromised in the reciprocal tariff negotiations with the United States. The 13MP targets GDP growth of between 4.5% and 5.5%, the creation of 1.2 million new jobs, and a gross national income per capita of RM77,200, according to official government projections. However, concerns remain over the plan's viability, with questions raised about the government's fiscal capacity to fund the RM611bil allocation without placing additional strain on the public. He also questioned whether there is sufficient political will to implement meaningful institutional reforms, the effectiveness of proposed strategies in delivering social justice, and whether the plan's indicators and targets are robust enough to guide Malaysia's progress over the next five years. Hamzah also congratulated and commended the Prime Minister for his key role in arranging a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. He said the coalition welcomed any Malaysian involvement in efforts to strengthen regional stability. 'Whatever role played by the Prime Minister, even if described by some as simply that of a host, it remains a contribution that will be recorded in history. 'What's important is that Malaysia continues to be respected as a sovereign nation and is regarded as a credible balancing power in the region,' he said. On July 28, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an unconditional and immediate ceasefire following a special meeting in Putrajaya chaired by Anwar.
