Contract education staff face renewal disparity in Andhra Pradesh
Currently, academic staff are receiving only 10 or 11-month contracts, excluding May, despite having previously been paid honorariums for all 12 months. The move has caused widespread anxiety among the staff and their families, with many demanding immediate redressal.
Contract Junior Lecturers, who are among the worst affected, have written to CM N Chandrababu Naidu, urging the restoration of the 12-month honorarium paid consistently between 2019 and 2023. They cite that even during the previous YSRCP regime, the practice continued, with a 10-day formal break included.
'From 2019 to 2023, we received payments for all 12 months based on a decision by a Group of Ministers chaired by the then Finance Minister. The current Finance Secretary, who was part of that decision, publicly endorsed the arrangement at the time,' said K Suresh, Chairman of the Contract Lecturers Joint Action Committee (JAC).
He stressed that lecturers remain actively engaged in academic duties, including remedial classes, admission campaigns, and preparations for supplementary exams during May. 'Despite our ongoing contribution, the Finance Department has cleared only 11 months of payment for the 2025–26 academic year, leaving out May 2024,' he said.
JAC Co-Chairman Kalluri Srinivas criticised the decision as arbitrary and demoralising.
'The Director of Intermediate Education had already submitted our work report recommending the May honorarium. The School Education Secretary approved it in January this year. But the Finance Department returned the proposal, citing financial implications. This is unjust — how can you say 'no work, no pay' when we're still performing official duties?'
He said even the Education Minister has endorsed the proposal and a Government Order (GO) is reportedly ready. 'We are only asking for continuity of an already established practice,' he said.
On Monday, union leaders met HRD Minister N Lokesh, who assured them that the matter would be taken up with senior officials, including the Principal Secretary and Director of Intermediate Education.
School Education Secretary Kona Sasidhar told TNIE, 'We are requesting the Finance Department to reconsider. We are hopeful of resolving the issue soon.'

5 lakh consumers opt for e-bills, MSEDCL saves Rs6 crore annually
Nagpur: In a significant step towards promoting eco-friendly practices, over five lakh electricity consumers across Maharashtra enrolled in Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd's (MSEDCL) 'Go-Green' initiative. By opting out of printed electricity bills and choosing to receive them via email and SMS, these environmentally conscious citizens are not only contributing to sustainability but also collectively saving more than Rs6 crore every year. As of June 30, 5.03 lakh low-tension category consumers joined the voluntary scheme. Under this initiative, each participating consumer receives a one-time discount of Rs120 on their electricity bill, which earlier was given as Rs10 per bill over a year. The full discount is now directly credited in the very first bill after enrollment. MSEDCL said that the initiative, launched to reduce the use of paper in bill printing, gained steady momentum in all regions of the state. "Western Maharashtra has seen the highest participation with 2.01 lakh consumers, followed by Konkan with 1.13 lakh, North Maharashtra with 70,226, Vidarbha with 63,731, and Marathwada 55,351. Collectively, these regions have accounted for savings of over Rs 6.04 crore annually," said MSEDCL. Mahavitaran's chairman and managing director, Lokesh Chandra, encouraged more consumers to join the digital shift, stating that contributing to this green initiative is a simple yet impactful way to support environmental preservation. The Go-Green facility can be accessed online through the official Mahavitaran website and mobile app. Once enrolled, consumers receive their electricity bills directly via their registered email and mobile numbers. The system ensures timely delivery of bills, and those who make payments within seven days of bill generation are also eligible for an additional 1% rebate. The digital format also allows consumers to store soft copies of their bills and access up to 12 months of billing history on MSEDCL's portal, with the option to download or print copies. The increasing response to the Go-Green campaign highlights a growing public awareness about sustainability and the ease of managing electricity bills digitally.

Amici Curiae object to erection of steel wire rope fencing in Thondamuthur to prevent human-elephant conflicts
A team of amici curiae assisting the Madras High Court in forest related cases has raised objections to the Tamil Nadu Government's proposed move to erect a steel wire rope fencing for a distance of 10 km at Thondamuthur in Coimbatore district to prevent Human-Elephant Conflicts (HEC). A special Division Bench of Justices N. Sathish Kumar and D. Bharatha Chakravarthy had called for the response of the amici curiae T. Mohan, Chevanan Mohan, Rahul Balaji and M. Santhanaraman to a counter affidavit filed by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests-cum-Chief Wildlife Warden Rakesh Kumar Dogra. Muralidharan, the PCCF-cum-CWC had on June 20, 2025 told the court the Forest Department had initially proposed to erect steel wire rope fence in Coimbatore forest division for a distance of 30 km but financial sanction was accorded only for 10 km. 'Coimbatore forest division was spread over 693.48 sqkm and shared a boundary with habitations for a length of about 350 km where it was vulnerable to HEC. Elephants had strayed out 9,710 times in this division in the past three years and 147 deaths had occurred during 2011-2022,' the officer said. The government had to pay a compensation of ₹11.35 crore to the families of the dead. He added traditional methods of digging elephant proof trenches and erecting solar fences had proved to be ineffective with the pachyderms that indulge in crop raiding and house breaking. 'Hence, it was decided that elephant proof steel wire rope fencing could be done on a pilot basis in Thondamuthur. Accordingly, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin made the announcement on November 6, 2024 and a Government Order sanctioning ₹5 crore was issued on February 4, 2025,' he said. Amici curiae's report Filing their response to the PCCF-cum-CWC's counter affidavit, the amici curiae told the court the area where the steel wire rope fencing had been proposed marks an abrupt shift from forest to private lands. They said, the terrain was slopy and there was no buffer zone for elephants to navigate. 'The steep slopes and the fence together will lock the area with no other solution for the elephants but to either circumnavigate the hills or try to force themselves through the fence. In both cases, the risk of mortality will be increased,' the amici curiae said by relying upon certain studies undertaken in the area. 'As the fence covers 10 km, elephants coming into the private from the adjacent forests will be prevented from accessing the forests on the other side and it may lead to more conflict. Closing off forests completely will solve problems locally but shift the conflict elsewhere,' they added. The lawyers also said: 'A scientific study must be undertaken to understand the impacts before fencing... The Forest Department is in the process of notifying elephant corridors across Tamil Nadu. Until the corridors in Coimbatore region are consolidated and notified, the fencing may be held off.' After taking the report of the amici curiae on file, the judges adjourned the hearing to July 25, 2025 and ordered maintenance of status quo till then.

Penukonda: Officials appeared indifferent towards the P4 initiative, a prestigious programme launched by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, during the Constituency Vision Action Plan meeting held on Saturday at the Bhuvana Vijaya meeting hall, under the chairmanship of RDO Anand Kumar. The meeting was attended by State Minister for BC Welfare, Handlooms and Textiles minister Savitha, along with tahsildars, MPDOs, and municipal commissioners from five mandals of the constituency. While discussions were underway on the P4 Action Plan, several officials were seen engrossed in their mobile phones, ignoring the proceedings. Even as the Minister and RDO were actively engaging in talks on the plan, the inattentive behavior of officials, who appeared visibly distracted and unconcerned, became a topic of criticism. Their disregard for a key initiative prioritised by the Chief Minister has sparked concerns and debate over the seriousness with which the programme is being implemented at the local level.
