Woman attacked over R350 SRD grant in KZN

A domestic dispute in Mhlasini, KwaZulu-Natal, turned violent on Tuesday 3 June after a woman admitted to spending her R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant on alcohol.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) responded to the scene after receiving reports of an assault.
When officers arrived, they found that a man had confronted his partner over the money she had withdrawn earlier that day.
According to RUSA, the man returned home and questioned his partner about the R350 SRD grant she had withdrawn.
She told him she had spent it on alcohol. A heated argument followed.
During the altercation, he allegedly assaulted her, pulled out a knife, and held it to her throat.
When she tried to defend herself, she grabbed the blade and suffered a deep cut to her hand.
Despite the injury, the woman declined to open a criminal case against her partner.

Breakthrough in DJ Sumbody case as four suspects are arrested

Four men, including one suspected of ordering the hit on Oupa John Sefoka, widely known as DJ Sumbody, have been arrested. The multi-talented DJ was tragically gunned down in a hail of bullets in November 2022, sending shockwaves across the country. On Monday, 21 July 2025, the SAPS announced a major breakthrough, confirming the arrest of four key suspects in the high-profile case. Gauteng's top organised crime unit, working closely with the SAPS Political Killings Task Team, successfully apprehended four key suspects. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the national police spokesperson, said that officers arrested the suspects in Gauteng on Monday afternoon. Three of the suspects are believed to be the hitmen, while the fourth is suspected to be the mastermind who orchestrated and ordered the fatal attack. Police also said they found the weapon used in the shooting and confirmed its link to several other murders. The suspects are facing charges that include murder and conspiracy to commit murder. General Masemola said the breakthrough is critical and expressed hope it would bring long-awaited closure to grieving families. 'Well done to the teams that have been piecing together evidence since November 2022. This is a culmination of hard work and dedication to justice. This is one of those complex cases that our teams needed to take their time in ensuring a thorough investigation so that we could ultimately bring a strong case before the court', said Gen Fannie Masemola. TIMELINE OF EVENTS: THE DJ SUMBODY MURDER CASE DJ Sumbody died in a hail of bullets on November 20, 2022, in Woodmead, Johannesburg. Shortly after, by late 2022, police began gathering ballistic evidence and investigating possible motives related to his brutal murder. Subsequently, in 2023, investigators transferred the case to the SAPS Political Killings Task Team as its complexity increased. Then, by mid-2024, new forensic evidence surfaced, revealing firearm links to several other murder cases under investigation. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE ARRESTS? Fake attorney jailed for posing as legal practitioner in court

A 43-year-old man who falsely represented himself as a legal practitioner has been sentenced to six years in prison by the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Rustenburg. Johannes Tebogo Motse operated for months without registration, deceiving multiple clients and forging legal documents to support his fraudulent activities. Between February and November 2022, Motse illegally appeared in courtrooms as a legal practitioner and took on cases despite having no legal credentials. Furthermore, he went as far as forging a fidelity fund certificate, an admission certificate, and a right of appearance certificate to make his claims convincing. One victim paid Motse R15 000 to file an appeal, but never received any legal service. Additionally, when the client realised the appeal had not progressed, they contacted the police. Investigators quickly uncovered that Motse was not registered with the Legal Practice Council of South Africa. Motse pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud, one count of theft, two counts of forgery, and two counts of uttering. The court also grouped the fraud, forgery, and uttering charges and imposed a six-year direct prison sentence. He received a two-year suspended sentence on the theft charge, provided he repays the R15 000 to the complainant by 31 August. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act. Advocate Matshidiso Ramakgaphola stressed that such crimes are growing frequently and must be dealt with firmly. The Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, welcomed the ruling and praised the state advocate for her work. 'These sentences underscore the NPA's commitment to combating bogus legal practitioners and protecting the integrity of the legal profession and the public,' said Dr Makhari. Stunning sighting of last remaining Knysna elephant

A rare sighting of Oupoot, the last known elephant of the Knysna forest, has sparked excitement and prompted a conservation response. The footage, captured by Karatara farmer Oubaas Fourie late last week, shows the elusive female elephant calmly traversing farmland near the forest. Oupoot is named after the beloved character in Dalene Matthee's novel 'Kringe in 'n Bos.' The video quickly went viral, drawing national attention due to Oupoot's near-mythical status in the region. Knysna elephant Oupoot photographed by farmer Oubaas Fourie SANParks confirmed it is aware of the footage and is working to verify the sighting. 'We are in contact with our rangers in the area to confirm whether it is indeed Oupoot roaming in Karatara, which is highly likely,' said Phokela 'PK' Lebea, SANParks Regional Communications Manager. Oupoot is believed to be the sole surviving member of the once-thriving Knysna elephant population, which declined over decades due to habitat loss, human encroachment, and hunting. The elephants once roamed freely in the forested areas of the Garden Route, but sightings have become extremely rare in recent years. SANParks is currently conducting a comprehensive risk assessment to guide future decisions about the elephant's protection. 'We remain committed to ensuring that any decision taken is informed by sound scientific, conservation, and stakeholder considerations,' Lebea added. Karatara is a town in the Knysna Local Municipality in the Western Cape province. It is situated 5km west of Barrington and some 40km northwest of Knysna. Think the last remaining Knysna elephant is safe or should it be relocated?
