LENGGONG: Lenggong Valley has experienced a remarkable 280 per cent surge in tourist arrivals over the past two years, transforming it into a thriving heritage tourism hub.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad revealed that visitor numbers skyrocketed from 24,770 in 2022 to 114,182 in 2023, driven by strategic development efforts.
The economic ripple effect has been substantial, with tour guides witnessing a 237 per cent income increase and accommodation providers recording a 145 per cent revenue boost.
'This growth directly benefits rural communities, including Orang Asli groups, now engaged in tourism-linked activities like handicrafts, traditional food, and homestays,' Saarani said during a dinner event marking the Aspiring Lenggong UNESCO Global Geopark evaluation.
Scientific assessments have identified 39 geosites, 11 geoarchaeological sites, eight biosites, and 21 cultural sites within the valley, five of which hold international geological significance.
'Lenggong Valley's unique blend of geology, biodiversity, and archaeology makes it a prime research and tourism destination,' he added.
The state government is enhancing Lenggong's global profile through partnerships with geopark networks in Japan, South Korea, and Turkey.
'It's now a heritage-based human capital development centre,' Saarani emphasised.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012, the 22 sq km valley forms part of the larger 2,248 sq km Aspiring Lenggong UNESCO Global Geopark, spanning five subdistricts with 61,039 residents. - Bernama

Ringgit eases against US dollar amid cautious market sentiment

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit closed easier against the US dollar on Monday, tracking the performance of its regional peers, as market sentiment remained extremely guarded while the foreign exchange market navigated a period of economic uncertainties. At 6 pm, the local note weakened to 4.2505/2560 against the greenback from last Friday's close of 4.2475/2525. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit initially appreciated against the US dollar in the morning session to RM4.2455 but later stabilised at around RM4.25 in the afternoon. "Asian currencies were also generally weak against the US dollar. The US tariffs continue to hog the limelight as the Donald Trump administration maintained its hawkish stance towards the European Union and Mexico with 30 per cent tariffs. "At the same time, Trump's frustration with Russia over the Ukraine war suggests that the fighting could prolong. Trump has indicated that his administration will send Patriot missiles to Ukraine to help it defend against Russia's missile attacks,' he said. Brent crude oil is currently trading above US$70 per barrel. At the close, the ringgit was traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. It strengthened against the British pound to 5.7305/7379 from 5.7524/7592, improved against the Japanese yen to 2.8858/8897 from 2.8893/8929 but traded marginally lower versus the euro to 4.9693/9757 from 4.9679/9737. The local note also trended mostly higher against ASEAN currencies. The ringgit traded slightly higher vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar at 3.3184/3229 from 3.3186/3228, improved against the Indonesian rupiah to 261.5/262.0 from 261.8/262.3 previously, and strengthened versus the Philippine peso at 7.50/7.51 from 7.52/7.53. But, it dropped against the Thai baht to 13.1213/1439 from 13.0668/0886 from Friday's close. - Bernama

NIISe To Be Operational In October

KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Bernama) -- The Immigration Department (JIM) is set to begin using the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) in October, a move aimed at enhancing border security through artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the entry control system would be used to screen visitors and tourists prior to their departure from their country of origin to Malaysia. 'Currently, we have separate systems that do not allow access to data from other agencies, such as the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), but now, we will integrate all the data to produce a more effective output before making any decisions. 'Through this system, tourists and visitors will be screened in their countries of origin before departure. If they are found to be ineligible to enter (Malaysia), the airline will automatically prevent them from boarding,' he said when appearing as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara tonight. He said the application of NIISe was among the department's initiatives to utilise AI technology to enhance the efficiency and integrity of its service delivery to the community. 'Through NIISe, we will also introduce a chatbot, allowing the public to ask questions directly through the system without needing to make phone calls or visit counters,' he said. According to him, the use of AI technology in JIM's operations was also in line with the Home Ministry's direction to expand the use of technology within the ministry under the theme 'AI for KDN, KDN for AI'. Zakaria said the autogate system using quick response (QR) code technology at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) would also incorporate AI for facial recognition, thereby addressing integrity issues more effectively. 'I see that in managing integrity, this technology greatly helps us reduce human involvement in decision-making. That is why we are moving towards fully using autogates at our entry points,' he said.
