PhilHealth CEO Mercado submits courtesy resignation
'Bilang pagsunod sa direktiba ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ay nagsumite na ng kaniyang courtesy resignation ang aming acting president and CEO Dr. Edwin M. Mercado,' PhilHealth said in a statement.
(In accordance with the directive of President Ferdinand Jr., our acting president and CEO Dr. Edwin Mercado submitted his courtesy resignation.)
His resignation came after the Governance Commission for GOCCs (GCG) directed state-run firms' non-ex-officio chairpersons, chief executive officers (CEOs), and all appointive directors/trustees/members of their respective GOCCs' governing boards to immediately submit their courtesy resignations to the President through the Office of the Executive Secretary.
Mercado, an orthopedic surgeon, was named as the new chief of PhilHealth in February in the midst of the controversial transfer of P60 billion funds of the state insurer to the national treasury, which was criticized by health advocates.
Last week, Marcos sought the courtesy resignations of Cabinet secretaries to "recalibrate" his administration after the 2025 national and local elections.
The President had lamented that results of the May 2025 midterm polls showed that the people are "tired of politics and they are disappointed with the government." —AOL, GMA Integrated News

Marcos: Small cities, municipalities priority in patient transport vehicles distribution
President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. said Friday that the government would prioritize giving patient transport vehicles (PTVs) to smaller cities and municipalities in support of their health projects. Marcos made the remark during the distribution of patient transport vehicles in Dipolog City. JV seeks P74.4-B supplemental budget for PhilHealth to sustain zero-balance billing
Senator JV Ejercito called Wednesday for the passage of a measure seeking to provide an additional P74.4 billion subsidy for the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) in order to sustain the zero-balance billing promise of the Universal Health Care (UHC) Law. This, as President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., in his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), announced that the government will cover all expenses incurred by Filipinos at Department of Health (DOH) hospitals. Ejercito, author and principal sponsor of the UHC Act, said that the supplemental budget for Philhealth topped with additional allocation for hospitals are key to the fulfillment of such. 'Sana ngayon ay totohanin na ang pagbibigay ng importansya sa UHC. Nandiyan na ang batas. Ang kulang na lang ay agresibong implementasyon at pondo,' the senator said in a statement. Under the proposed bill, PhilHealth premiums will be funded for indigent families, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and financially incapable patients, amounting to P53.1 billion. Meanwhile, a P21.2 billion will be allocated for the enhanced benefit packages including expanded dialysis, mental health care, nutrition support, and outpatient services, and an additional P127.6 million will be provided for the coverage for PAMANA beneficiaries in conflict-affected areas. Health Secretary Ted Herbosa earlier said that the zero-balance billing is currently being implemented in 87 DOH hospitals across the country, excluding the four government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCC), namely the Philippine Heart Center, Philippine Lung Center, National Kidney Transplant Institute, and the Philippine Children's Medical Center. Herbosa said that to avail of the zero-balance billing, a patient must be admitted to the basic accommodation or the ward of a DOH hospital. 'Basta 'wag lang kayo nasa private, kasi pag nagpunta ka sa private may bayad yung doctor, may bayad yung room. Basta nasa basic accommodation ka ng DOH, bayad na ang bill mo,' he said in a post-SONA discussion on Tuesday. SONA 2025: Marcos urges healthier lifestyles, 'car-free' Sundays
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Monday expressed concern over the growing number of overweight Filipino adults, calling for a nationwide shift to healthier, more active lifestyles through accessible community-based fitness initiatives. Speaking before Congress during his fourth 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA), Marcos said, "Nakikita natin ang sobrang pagtaas ng timbang ng ating mga kababayang edad dalawampu at pataas. Kaya sikapin nating maging mas aktibo ang ating pamumuhay araw-araw." (We are seeing an excessive rise in the weight of our countrymen aged 20 and above. That's why we must strive to live more active lifestyles every day.) In May last year, the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) reported a significant increase in overweight and obesity prevalence among Filipino adolescents, from 11.6% in 2018 to 13% in 2021. Obesity is not an issue facing the Philippines alone. According to research published in The Lancet, rates of obesity and overweight are spiraling due to a "monumental societal failure" to tackle the problem. More than half of adults and almost a third of children and young people set to be affected by 2050, the study found. Marcos encouraged local government units (LGUs) to organize sports activities such as local leagues, fun runs, and group fitness events like Zumba and aerobics. He also urged cities and municipalities to open public parks and plazas, and make them inviting spaces for physical activity. "Ipalaganap natin ang pagsasagawa ng mga palaro at mga paliga, mga fun runs at fun walks, pati na mga pa-aerobics at pa-Zumba," he said. (Let's encourage organizing sports fests and tournaments, fun runs and fun walks, and even aerobics and Zumba sessions.)
