Coloured mascara might sound oh-so-Eighties but, if you hadn't noticed, everything — from shoulder pads and leotards to Duran Duran — is having a moment now.
So it's time to embrace a bit of colour on your lashes.
Victoria Beckham just launched her Future Lash Mascara in Bordeaux, a deep reddish brown, while Millie Bobby Brown sent a burgundy L'Oreal Paris version (not available in the UK) viral after declaring it her favourite.
'You don't have to dive right in'
Elsewhere Cara Delevingne instantly made blue cool after sporting it in a YSL mascara ad, and TOWIE's Amber Turner confessed on TikTok she's been seduced by green.
With a rainbow of shades on offer, I decided to put this summer's most surprising eye make-up trend to the test and asked make-up artist and content creator, Nicola Chapman, for her advice.
'I love the idea of coloured mascara as a quick and easy way to change things up,' she says.
'With festival season coming up, it's a way to elevate your look, and you don't have to dive right in.

'You can layer a colour over black mascara, or just use colour on the tips, or outer edges if you're not feeling confident.
'Wearing coloured mascara is an easy way of showing you've got your eye on current beauty trends so, get it right, and it can give you a youthful boost.'
Everyone compliments me on my flawless 'glass skin' it's all thanks to a game-changing 89p hack I use in the morning
But she has a clever tip for those who want to try something more dramatic.
'It's like red lipstick,' says Nicola.
'Sometimes you need to get used to it yourself first.
'Wear it around the house for a few days, look in mirrors and notice it, then go out in it.'
As for who should choose which colour, Nicola says: 'While there are some shades that will make certain eye colours pop, or might work well with certain skin tones, I don't like being too prescriptive.
'It's make-up — it's meant to be fun and experimental.'
We reveal the best — and most purse-friendly — of what's on offer . . .
The one that looks more luxe than it is
MAXFINE 5D MASCARA IN PURPLE,
£4.99, amazon.co.uk (Also available in blue and white)
12
The purple was striking when it went on and, despite the depth of colour, left lashes looking natural and not caked
I WAS shocked – in a good way – by this impulse Amazon purchase.
The purple was striking when it went on and, despite the depth of colour, left lashes looking natural and not caked.
I applied an extra coat half an hour later and it was even more impressive.
Nicola says: 'Shades like this are about fun and creativity so pick a colour you like and go for it.'
The one that lasts
REVOLUTION WRAP LASH IN BURGUNDY,
£10.99, Superdrug
12
It gave depth to my brown eyes and crucially, despite streaming hay fever, my mascara stayed put
UNLIKE others that paint colour on to the lashes, mascaras such as this one wrap each lash in the coloured formula giving a flake-free finish.
The burgundy felt like a sophisticated choice.
It gave depth to my brown eyes and crucially, despite streaming hay fever, my mascara stayed put.
Nicola says: 'This is great for green eyes as the red brings out green tones.'
The green that looks gorgeous on everyone
KIKO MAXI MOD COLOUR MASCARA IN METALLIC GREEN,
£12.99, amazon.co.uk (Available in four more colours)
12
Throughout the day I would catch it working beautifully with iridescent blues and greens for a really stunning peacock-inspired smoky eye
DON'T be put off by the name — this 'metallic green' was more of a teal blue, and all the more wearable for it.
It didn't have that much wow factor when I first put it on.
But throughout the day I would catch it working beautifully with iridescent blues and greens for a really stunning peacock-inspired smoky eye.
The best of the bunch
MAYBELLINE SKY HIGH MASCARA IN BLUE,
£12.99, Boots (Available in pink, black, brown, burgundy and plum)
12
It required a couple of coats to get a really punchy blue shade
I AM a fan of the original black version and the blue didn't disappoint. It gave me serious length without heaviness, but it required a couple of coats to get a really punchy blue shade.
Nicola suggests: 'For brighter shades to pop, use a white primer first.
'But a royal blue mascara with a smoky eye can look gorgeous and a bit different.'
The biggest bargain
BARRY M REBEL LASH COLOURED MASCARA IN PINK,
£4.99, barrym.com (Available in blue and purple)
12
It left me with what looked like pink frosted tips to my lashes
ON paler lashes than mine, or maybe with a white primer first, this pink might have looked really zingy.
But, for me, the colour didn't shout as much as I expected it to.
The result was chalky and clumpy.
Instead it left me with what looked like pink frosted tips to my lashes.
But if you want to experiment, at this price, you can't really complain.
The grown-up choice
EYEKO LASH ALERT LIFT & CURL MASCARA IN GREEN,
£17, eyeko.co.uk (Available in purple, black, brown and blue)
12
I felt it looked like I had made an effort but as not trying too hard
KEEN to try a new shade but don't want to draw too much attention?
These may be the answer – a creamy formulation with earthy, rather than primary, colours.
I used the green shade – a sort of muted khaki – on my upper and lower lashes.
I felt it looked like I had made an effort but as not trying too hard.
The one to skip
3INA MAKEUP THE COLOUR MASCARA IN YELLOW, £14.95, uk.3ina.com (Available in eight other shades including pink, orange, violet, turquoise and green)
12
Perhaps it will look OK on some people
I HAVE no idea if the other shades available are any better than this but the yellow went on thick and clumpy and basically made my eyelashes disappear into my olive skin.
Perhaps it will look OK on some people, but it just wasn't right for me.
The timid choice
PS… PRO EXTREME LASH MASCARA IN BROWN,
£3.50, Primark
12
As a shade, it has a more everyday vibe – the tracksuit bottoms of mascara
IF you're looking to branch out from black mascara, brown is probably the gateway option to other colours.
I liked it.
As a shade, it has a more everyday vibe – the tracksuit bottoms of mascara.
It made my lashes appear longer and thicker, but there was a bit of clumping which I imagine would only get worse with more use (new mascaras tend to clump the least).
But as an introduction to non-black, it's worth giving this a whirl.
Nicola's top tips for doing your lashes Start from the root. I like to move my eyelids rather than drag the brush, so you sort of blink your lashes on to the brush and wiggle it from side to side to coat every lash. For more precise application, as you take the wand out of the tube, bend it just before you get to the brush so it is angled. You'll have more control and are less likely to get mascara on your cheekbone. To do the inner lashes, look to the outside and, if you need to, buy small individual spoolie brushes (£2 for five, Boots) which you can use to get into the corners. A lash separator – like a metal comb for eyelashes – is one of my favourite products. Metal ones hold their form better and you just brush through and it separates lashes beautifully. (£8, uklash.com).
Ultimate anti-ageing mascara trick
PLUMMY, burgundy tones are really fashionable right now, according to Nicola, who says that and they can also be really flattering and soft.

Top tips to knock the years off with mascara
Credit: Supplied
She adds: 'As we get older, we tend to get redder round the eye and so for these shades to flatter, you need to take that redness out first.
'Use a really lightweight concealer close to the lashes on the lid and underneath and then buff it out before applying one of those plum or burgundy mascaras.'
What better way to knock off five years than with a super on-trend shade that is also really flattering for almost everyone?
For even more anti-ageing bang for your buck, use some brightening eye drops before you start (try Brightening Eye Drops, £3.49, Superdrug).

Lauren Goodger proudly shows off outrageous surgery transformation in thong swimsuit after revealing plans to reverse BBL and breast implants

proudly showed off her shocking surgery transformation in a black thong swimsuit as she posed poolside on holiday in Portugal last week. The TOWIE star, 38, has previously revealed her plans to reverse her Brazilian bum lift and breast implants after hating the size of them. Lauren displayed her curves in the barely-there swimwear as she posed in all angles while enjoying a relaxing day at the pool. In an exclusive interview with Daily Mail in March, she shared: 'I was terrified [of getting it done] which is what I'm working on, I'm working on that. 'I've delayed it for a year now. I was meant to get the implants out and I want them out because that will transform me. 'It's not even about my weight, it's more my boobs and bum. If I could get rid of them I'd feel and look so much better.' She added: 'I've got such a big bum and ginormous boobs, that I look so much bigger than I am because If you catch me at an angle I can look a lot bigger and if they were gone I'd look much more in proportion. 'So I don't really think it is all together my weight, it's more because I need to get rid of the surgically enhanced assets which is my bum and boobs. 'Lets hope I can do it this year because I will feel so much more comfortable.' Lauren also admitted to The Sun that the surgery she has undergone has left her thinking her body looks 'abnormal'. She said she thinks her 'massive boobs and bum' have made her look bigger than she actually is and shared her plans to look like her old self again. Lauren said: 'I've ruined my looks with surgery - I hate my fake boobs and bum now. I feel like my body looks abnormal - I don't need these massive boobs and massive bum. She added: 'When I look at myself naked in the mirror, all I see is lumps and bumps everywhere.' In May, Lauren revealed she is having her 'heavy' breast implants removed and can't wait to go back to a 'natural look'. Lauren took a plunge in the water to cool off The reality star put her bottom on display in the thong one-piece She admitted her breasts were 'perfect' before although now they simply 'make her look big' while opening up about her breast-reduction journey on Instagram. The reality star shared on her Instagram page a snap posing in a sheer dusty pink baby doll, showing off her very ample assets. She wrote in the lengthy caption: '11 years ago I had a breast augmentation, one of the things I regret later in life. 'I had the perfect boobs .. they have been great over the years but since being a mum and breastfeeding for 1 year they have now changed and I've always found they make me look bigger! 'Also they are heavy and I don't like the idea of an implant being in me all these years and I miss my old boobs so much.. so after looking around I've found someone that I feel really keen with having my consultation with @marksolomos. 'This is a HUGE step for me I've wanted to have them removed for so long but suffering with serve anxiety surgery is the last thing I can do ! Lauren finished: 'So it's early stages but I am bringing you a long with me! 'I'm terrified but also for health reasons I'm having implants removed and bring back more to my normal self wanting to reverse everything back to natural.' Lauren's inner circle are reportedly concerned about her growing closeness with her ex Charles Drury as they fear she is 'planning a future with him. The reality star appeared to have gotten back with Charles earlier this year after spending time together at the zoo, three years after Charles was accused of attacking Lauren on the day of their daughter Loren's funeral shortly before their split. Charles was then charged with assault and engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour towards Lauren, which he has denied. Lauren shares daughter Larose, four, with Charles and tragically lost their second daughter in 2022 after she was stillborn due to complications with her umbilical cord. The pair recently enjoyed a spa break, fueling rumours they've reconciled - though Lauren has yet to confirm the romance publicly. According to The Sun, Lauren's pals have 'serious reservations' about the reunion - despite her reportedly believing there's still a future with Charles. MailOnline contacted Lauren and her representative for comment at the time.

L'Oreal's £32 hydrating serum Zara McDermott uses for her in-flight skincare is now £16

Zara McDermott has previously shared that she uses the L'Oreal Paris hyaluronic acid serum during her in-flight skincare routine to beat dryness, and it's now got 50% off Summer is of course the time when plenty of us are jetting off on holiday and making the most of the sunny weather abroad. Whilst we might have prepped our holiday skincare routine, there's one part of your trip that can leave your skin worse for wear before you've even arrived. Flights are notorious for causing your skin to become dehydrated, tight and puffy, which is why Zara McDermott has devised the perfect in-flight skincare routine to make sure you arrive at your destination glowing. One key part of her routine is the L'Oréal Paris 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Revitalift Filler Serum, which Zara featured in her TikTok video last year. In the video, Zara said: 'I hate that dry skin feeling you get when stepping off a plane, so I always make sure I look after my skin while on the flight.' After applying a hydrating sheet mask, Zara then puts several drops of the L'Oréal Paris 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Revitalift Filler Serum onto her skin. The serum is now 50% off in LookFantastic's summer sale, slashed from its usual price of £31.99 to £16 for a travel-friendly sized 30ml bottle. She adds: 'I'm not joking when I say I take this mini hyaluronic acid with me absolutely everywhere.' She then explains why the 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Revitalift Filler Serum is her serum of choice, with its three types of hyaluronic acid being the biggest draw. One of the types is micro epidermic hyaluronic acid, which penetrates even deeper into your skin's layers for added hydration. Its 1.5% concentration of hyaluronic acid is also the strongest in the L'Oreal family, adding extra nourishment and moisture back into your complexion – a must if you're spending hours under the plane air con. It also helps skin to appear plumper, smoother and more toned, ready for a few days of sunshine. Another great choice for multi-weight hyaluronic acids is Medik8's Hydr8 B5 Intense, which currently has 20% off. Usually priced at £59, it's now £47.20 and contains a combination of vitamin B5 and several different weights of hyaluronic acid. For a slightly more affordable pick, La Roche Posay's Hyalu B5 Serum Anti-Wrinkle Concentrate Serum With Hyaluronic Acid has a similar ingredient combination which helps fight wrinkles whilst hydrating, as is on sale for £31.50 down from £45. You could also nab BYOMA's Hydrating Serum, which is a bargain at £13 and contains a mixture of hydrating ingredients which minimise your skin's water loss, hydrates your skin and boosts your skin barrier. However considering how enviable Zara's skin always looks, it's safe to say that we'll be taking a leaf out of her in-flight skincare routine – especially now the L'Oréal Paris 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Revitalift Filler Serum is 50% off! Samantha Faiers hits back after HUGE backlash to her kids never wearing suncream

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SAMANTHA Faiers has hit back after coming under fire for revealing that her kids never wear sunscreen. The reality star, 34, shared a "dangerous" conspiracy theory, saying her kids have "built up a tolerance" to sunburn. She wrote on Instagram: "Wow, I've received so many kind and supportive messages from my sunscreen post. Thank you. "I'd definitely recommend doing a little research into which tallow you'd like to use, there are lots of amazing options out there." She continued: "PS: Just sharing my experience and tips (not an expert)." The reality star then shared a photo of a brand of tallow that she usually relies on as an alternative to sunscreen. Sam's confession came after she decided to do a Q&A with fans. During it, one person asked the former Towie star: 'What suntan lotion do you use as you have a good natural colour?' Sam, who is mum to Paul, 5, Rosie, 5, and three-year-old Edward, shared: 'So this is always a bit of a controversial one, but honestly, me and my whole family don't actually wear sunscreen. 'Over the years, the kids have built up a really good tolerance to being in the sun. Of course, if it's really hot and the sun feels too harsh. 'I'll make sure we head into the shade.. usually around lunchtime we'll go in, have something to eat, and just avoid those peak hours.' Sam Faiers mum-shamed after fans spot detail that's 'giving them nightmares' in new video with youngest son She went on: 'I'm really careful about sunscreen in general, because a lot of them are actually pretty harmful and full of toxic ingredients. 'If you do want to protect your kids, I think SPF swimwear is such a good and safer option. But also, don't be afraid of the sun! Early in the morning or later in the afternoon when it's not as strong, I love letting the kids run around and soak it up it's so good for them. 'That said, I do always bring a Tallow Zine SPF with me when I go away, just in case. And hats or caps are a must! especially for us ladies, because no one wants extra sun damage (I've had my fair share over the years because I'm such a sun lover!).' Fans have commented on Sam's latest post to share their concern after her suncreen message. One person wrote: 'You need to delete your story about not wearing sunscreen I don't think you understand the damage you can do to your followers by promoting this.' Someone else said: 'absolutely agree - so irresponsible!!' and a third echoed: ' was in shock - 'kids have grown a tolerance to the sun over the years' wtf?! Happy for them to get skin cancer then?' It's not the first time Sam has been mum shamed on social media. In a recent clip, followers were stunned when they spotted a lit candle on a tray next to Sam as she sat on a sofa with her youngest child. One person wrote: "Why is there a lit candle on the sofa with a child running around?" Another said: "That candle on the sofa is giving me anxiety." And a third added: "Im going to have nightmares tonight about that candle."
