MIRI (May 17): The Hornbill 7s Rugby Tournament roared to life at Miri Stadium today, drawing teams from across Sarawak and beyond for a high-energy weekend celebrating youth rugby.
Jointly organised by the Miri Division Rugby Association (MDRA), the event is supported by a strong network of state and national bodies, including the Sarawak Rugby Union (SRU), Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), National Rugby Development Programme (NRDP), the Education Ministry, the Sarawak State Education Department, and the Miri District Education Office.
While early-week matches focused on the Under-12 category, the spotlight this weekend is on the Under-14, Under-17, and Under-20 divisions, with both boys' and girls' teams in action.
Today's matches saw dozens of games unfold with intensity and sportsmanship, as young athletes brought skill and passion to the pitch.
Among local participants, several Miri secondary schools fielded multiple teams, including SMK Merbau, SMK Pujut, SMK Dato Permaisuri, SMK Lutong, SM Sains Miri, and Kolej Vokasional Miri. SMK Merbau stood out with a strong showing—fielding seven teams across three categories: four in Under-17 boys, two in Under-14 boys, and one in Under-17 girls.
Designated as a training and development centre for SSC and MSNS in the region, SMK Merbau's active participation underscores its crucial role in nurturing emerging rugby talent.
The tournament also welcomed teams from outside Miri, including SMK Tebedu, SMK Tatau, and a squad from Labuan under the NRDP.
Representing Sarawak's interior, the Baram Rhinos Junior team added a grassroots element to the competition, while SSC's South Zone team further enriched the tournament's diversity.
A notable match today featured the Under-20 women's teams from Sarawak and Labuan—currently the only two sides in that category.
With a final showdown scheduled between them tomorrow, today's encounter served as a valuable warm-up and scouting opportunity for both camps.
While the competition remained fierce, coaches consistently highlighted the tournament's developmental focus over sheer results.
'This is where we start seeing who has the potential to go further,' said Er Embran L Mohd Ali, coach of the MSNS men's elite team.
'While it's not official scouting, it helps us keep track of emerging players.'
Tournament director and MDRA vice president Faqrul Hafiz Abu Bakar emphasised the event's broader objectives.
'This tournament also serves to support broader development goals,' he said.
The spotlight also shone on the growing momentum of girls' rugby in Sarawak.
Sylvia Alexander Lian, Head Coach of the Sarawak women's team and MDRA development officer, spoke on the sidelines about the sport's expanding influence.
'Women's rugby is the fastest growing sport in the world,' she said when asked about the sport's influence in Miri.
'What we are doing now is picking up where we left off before the pandemic, rebuilding the momentum and getting more girls back into the game,' she added.

Haze unlikely to affect Borneo Games 2025, says Abd Karim

He said the haze was mainly caused by fires in Indonesia's Riau Archipelago, with the smoke drifting into Sarawak due to the shifting wind directions, particularly affecting the Kuching area. 'Now, because of the change in the wind, the direct flight is moving to Kuching, but the Riau Archipelago is not that big. 'Once they manage to control the fires, I believe we won't be seeing this kind of smoke or the effects that we are seeing today. 'So by the time the Borneo Games are going to be held, which is in September, same time as the Air Supply (concert), I think by that time it should be okay,' he told reporters after officiating the launch of the 'Air Supply 50th Anniversary Concert' at The Spring Mall here today. When asked whether there are contingency plans to postpone the event should the haze persist, Abdul Karim said the organisers had been monitoring the situation closely but no postponement had been planned at this time. 'If the situation remains moderate and manageable, we certainly hope the championship can proceed without issue. 'As I mentioned earlier, it's very likely that when the students arrive during that period, the API (Air Pollutant Index) will still be within an acceptable range,' he said. On preparations for the Games, the state minister gave assurance that Sarawak was fully ready, noting that the state successfully hosted the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in August last year, and had the experience and capability to manage such events. 'With only five core sports and two traditional events in the Borneo Games, compared to over 30 in Sukma, this is relatively easy for us,' he said. He added that the organising committee, Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), volunteer teams, and officials from his ministry were already mobilised and committed to ensuring a successful event. As for the state's athletes, Abdul Karim said preparations are going well. He stressed that while medals are important, the true objective of the Borneo Games is to foster stronger ties and camaraderie among the provinces and states across Borneo. Abdul Karim proposes annual MySED sports carnival to promote unity

KUCHING (June 29): Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MySED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has proposed that the MySED Sports Carnival be made an annual event, following the success of its inaugural edition. Speaking during the closing ceremony of the carnival at Sarawak Sports Village today, he said the event has proven its potential and should be expanded to other major cities in Sarawak such as Sibu and Miri in future editions. 'This inaugural MySED Sports Carnival should not remain a one-off event but must be held annually and hosted in various major cities across Sarawak to further promote unity, fitness, and healthy competition among state agencies. It should only be the beginning. 'An event like this should not just be limited to Kuching every year. By rotating the host city, we allow more participation from other regions and foster closer ties between different zones and agencies under MySED,' he added when speaking during the closing ceremony of the carnival at Sarawak Sports Village today. Abdul Karim said organising the carnival annually would help instill a consistent culture of sports and wellness among civil servants while providing opportunities to engage the public through friendly competition and recreational activities. Stadium Sarawak upgrades hinge on available budget ― Minister
KUCHING (May 27): The redevelopment of Stadium Sarawak remains a key focus in Sarawak's push to become a regional sports hub, though the final scope of upgrades will depend heavily on available funding, said Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. The Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister said while the stadium is an essential venue for athletics and opening ceremonies of various sport events, financial considerations will ultimately determine the extent of its redevelopment. 'We will have to see. Cost is always one of the main factors ― whether we want to proceed with the development, and at what stage,' he told a press conference after delivering his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here earlier today. Abdul Karim noted that aside from Stadium Sarawak, there are 18 other sports to be hosted, each requiring facility upgrades. 'If the budget does not allow for full upgrades, we may have to determine which improvements are sufficient for the stadium to accommodate the sport events and the opening ceremony,' he said. Earlier, during his speech, Abdul Karim reaffirmed the state government's commitment to developing sports infrastructure across Sarawak in its efforts to make the state a regional sports hub. 'Led by the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), key initiatives include upgrading grassroots and elite sports facilities to improve access, talent development and quality of life. 'A highlight is the redevelopment of Stadium Sarawak, which is set to meet international standards with smart and athlete-friendly features,' he said. He added that SSC will also implement a Critical Maintenance Audit Plan to ensure long-term sustainability of sport facilities.
