Abdul Karim proposes annual MySED sports carnival to promote unity
KUCHING (June 29): Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MySED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has proposed that the MySED Sports Carnival be made an annual event, following the success of its inaugural edition.
Speaking during the closing ceremony of the carnival at Sarawak Sports Village today, he said the event has proven its potential and should be expanded to other major cities in Sarawak such as Sibu and Miri in future editions.
'This inaugural MySED Sports Carnival should not remain a one-off event but must be held annually and hosted in various major cities across Sarawak to further promote unity, fitness, and healthy competition among state agencies. It should only be the beginning.
'An event like this should not just be limited to Kuching every year. By rotating the host city, we allow more participation from other regions and foster closer ties between different zones and agencies under MySED,' he added when speaking during the closing ceremony of the carnival at Sarawak Sports Village today.
Abdul Karim said organising the carnival annually would help instill a consistent culture of sports and wellness among civil servants while providing opportunities to engage the public through friendly competition and recreational activities.
He also extended his appreciation to the organising committee led by MySED Permanent Secretary Morshidi Frederick, as well as the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), for successfully delivering the event.
'I believe this is something we can consider funding through existing event grants, such as those under the Ministry of Tourism, to help support and sustain it in the coming years.
'This carnival is also not only about winning or losing. It's about togetherness, maintaining good health, and creating positive energy among our agencies,' he said.
He concluded by saying that sports serve as a subtle yet effective means of reminding civil servants of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially when they are no longer involved in competitive athletics.
'To those who won, congratulations. But to those who didn't, your presence and participation made this carnival a success,' he said.
The MySED Sports Carnival 2025 took place from June 27 to 29 at the Sarawak Sports Village and featured four zonal teams: Kras Panthers (Southern Zone), KMSS Midforce (Central Zone), Northern Crocs (Northern Zone), and Hornbill X-Troopers (combined SSC and MSNS).
The event was jointly organised by MySED, SSC, and MSNS.

Borneo Junior Open squash tourney records most entries, 167 players from overseas
KUCHING (July 17): The Borneo Junior Open Squash Tournament has recorded its highest-ever turnout, said Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. Abdul Karim said the state government would continue to support the organisation of both national and international sporting events in Sarawak. He also revealed that plans are in motion to upgrade squash facilities in the state to accommodate more courts and enable Sarawak to host more international-level events in future. 'We want to be ready and we want to make Sarawak a sports powerhouse,' he said. The 8th Borneo Junior Open 2025 Squash Tournament will run until July 20. Returning nations competing this year are Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, South Korea, Macau, Pakistan, Singapore, the Philippines, and the United States, while Canada, New Zealand, Russia, and Sri Lanka are making their debut appearances at the championship.

Don't sideline locals in race for football glory, says Sarawak minister

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Sarawak's sports minister has warned against having an overreliance on naturalised players in the Harimau Malaya squad, saying it could pose long-term risks to the growth of Malaysian football. While the rules under Fifa and the Football Association of Malaysia allow naturalised and heritage players to represent Malaysia, Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he was concerned about the impact this would have on the development of local talent. He acknowledged that the trend was also visible regionally, with Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines adopting similar approaches as eligibility rules are relaxed, Dayak Daily reported. 'Personally, I prefer to see our 'anak jati', the natives, representing Malaysia and Sarawak. 'Many of those currently representing Malaysia are based in Europe or Latin America. It will be difficult for us to keep the local football scene alive if we continue relying on players from outside,' he was quoted as saying. Karim said focus should be placed on developing a strong and sustainable grassroots ecosystem. 'We have to keep on looking at ourselves and build it up from the bottom,' he said. Last month, a new-look Harimau Malaya eased past reigning Asean Cup champions Vietnam 4-0 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, their first victory against the Golden Star Warriors in 11 years. Nine of the team's starting-11 were naturalised players, with five of them – Joao Figueiredo, Rodrigo Holgado, Jon Irazabal, Facundo Garces and Imanol Machuca – receiving Fifa clearance just hours before kick-off. FAM's policy of naturalising foreign players for the national team came under scrutiny from former national players last year, who argued that the national football body should focus on developing local talent rather than relying on foreign-born players. Six Teams to Compete at Borneo Games 2025 in Kuching
SIX contingents are set to participate in the Borneo Games 2025, which will be held from Sept 24 to 28 at the Petra Jaya Sports Complex here. Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the contingents involved are Brunei, Sarawak, Sabah, Labuan, and Indonesia's East and West Kalimantan provinces. He said eight sports will be contested during the event – badminton, lawn bowls, athletics, archery, swimming, tug of war, blowpipe, and golf. 'As of now, 124 gold medals are expected to be contested. However, the number may increase following requests to add more gold medal events in the blowpipe competition,' he told a press conference here today. An estimated 5,000 participants are expected to attend, including athletes, coaches, team managers, referees, technical officials, secretariat staff, media, volunteers, and representatives from relevant agencies. The Borneo Games was first held in 1995, with the most recent edition taking place in 2013 in Labuan.
