Liam Delap scores first goal for Chelsea as Blues progress to last 16

Leader Live25-06-2025
The former Ipswich forward struck just moments after defender Tosin Adarabioyo had opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time of their final Group D game in Philadelphia.
Tyrique George scored a third in time added on at the end of the game after Chelsea had a penalty awarded for handball overturned by VAR.
The result means the Londoners will now face Benfica – surprise winners of Group C ahead of Bayern Munich – in the next round in Charlotte on Saturday.
It was an occasion when Delap began paying back his £30million fee.

With Nicolas Jackson suspended, the 22-year-old – one of just three players to retain his place as manager Enzo Maresca stuck to his plan to rotate his side – had an opportunity to cement his place.
It was a chance he took on what was a hot and sticky night in Pennsylvania, with the temperature still 33C when the game kicked off at 9pm local time.
His goal – coming in a quickfire double, both created by Enzo Fernandez – put the game beyond doubt before the interval.
With FIFA president Gianni Infantino watching on, the Blues had already dominated the opening period.
Chelsea, with a superior goal difference to Esperance, knew a draw would be sufficient to secure the runners-up spot in the group behind Flamengo.
That put the onus on Esperance but, despite some attacking vibrancy, they lacked the quality up front.
Delap created the first chance of the night when he skipped around two challenges but his shot was comfortably saved by Bechir Ben Said.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who has been linked with West Ham, got in a header from a Malo Gusto cross but it looked to be going wide before Yassine Meriah headed clear.
Josh Acheampong forced Ben Said to save from distance but the flag was raised before Delap could get to the rebound.
Another good move led to Fernandez blasting wide but Chelsea finally took control with their quickfire double in first-half stoppage time.
Adarabioyo opened the scoring with a well-placed header across goal after rising to meet a Fernandez free-kick.
Fernandez was again the provider as the Londoners doubled their lead moments later.
This time he chipped forward for Delap and the striker turned brilliantly to beat one defender and flick past another before rolling the ball past a statuesque Ben Said.
Nukunku appealed for a penalty after going down early in the second half but nothing was given before Noni Madueke sent a shot narrowly wide.
Chelsea were awarded a spot-kick when an Andrey Santos effort from distance struck the arm of Meriah.
It seemed a harsh decision but there was a long delay, with Christopher Nkunku stood over the ball waiting to take it, before the referee was called over the monitor.
Chelsea finally got the third goal their superiority deserved when substitute George's shot squirmed through Ben Said's grasp.

Arsenal aim to complete £60m transfer after £63m Viktor Gyokeres deal

Arsenal will move to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace after completing their £63 million deal for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, according to reports. After several weeks of negotiations, Arsenal have finally agreed a deal for Gyokeres worth €63.5m (£54.8m) up front plus €10m (£8.6m) in add-ons. Gyokeres travelled to London on Friday and is due to undergo his medical this weekend before finalising his move to Mikel Arteta's side. Arteta is hopeful that Gyokeres can link up with his new Arsenal teammates who are currently in Singapore for their pre-season tour. According to The Independent, Eze has made Arsenal his first-choice destination this summer and sources close to the England international are said to be 'confident' a deal can be agreed with Palace before the end of the transfer window. The report adds that Arsenal are aiming to agree a £60m deal with Palace, which is lower than the 27-year-old's £68m release clause. Meanwhile, Noni Madueke has decided to cut short his holiday following his £52m move from Chelsea this month. The 23-year-old made five appearances for Chelsea at the Club World Cup before opting to join Arsenal on the weekend of the final where Enzo Maresca's side beat Paris Saint-Germain. More Trending 'Obviously once we have finalised everything with a player we want to integrate him with the team as quickly as possible,' Arteta said on Friday. 'With Noni it was impossible because he needed some time. 'I think he's going to take a shorter vacation than he deserves because he wants to joins us straightaway, as soon as we're back. 'I think immediately is better so they can start to join the team, get to know each other and get the ideas we want to put in their minds.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Lionel Messi reaction to MLS suspension revealed

Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas has revealed that Lionel Messi is 'extremely upset' over his Major League Soccer suspension for missing the 2025 MLS All-Star Game. Messi and his Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba were both voted into the All-Star Game but did not take part in any of the events in Austin, Texas this week. The former Barcelona duo did not show for the All-Star skills challenge on Tuesday evening and were missing from the MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday where they would have played against an equivalent select squad from Mexico's LigaMX. MLS rules state that players who miss the All-Star Game without approval from the league are subject to a suspension. On Friday, MLS confirmed that Messi and Alba will serve a one-game ban and are 'unavailable' for Inter Miami's league match against Cincinnati on Saturday night. 'The reaction was as expected, obviously it was not a positive reaction, they want to compete, they want to play games, that's what they're here for – to play and win,' Mas said on Friday. 'They understand the magnitude of tomorrow night's game, so the reaction was exactly as expected out of two competitive players who don't understand the decision, who don't understand why not attending an exhibition match leads directly to a suspension, the rule is what it is, they don't understand it. 'I don't agree with the rule, I have made my thoughts know to the commissioner very plainly. I think it is going to change but that's neither here nor there, but their reaction was as I expected, they were extremely upset both of them. Asked if the decision could impact Messi's future at Inter Miami, Mas replied: 'He's very upset, he's extremely upset, as expected. I'm hopeful it doesn't have an impact long term. More Trending 'Will it have an impact initially in the player's perception on how the league rules work? Absolutely, no doubt.' MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement: 'I know Lionel Messi loves this league. I don't think there's a player – or anyone – who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi. 'I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision. 'Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it. It was a very difficult decision. That said, we're going to take a hard look at the policy moving forward. I'm committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve.' Premier League heavyweights in £1bn spending frenzy as rivals left behind

Chelsea are on course to become the second Premier League club to take their summer spending commitments towards £300m as last season's top four threaten to pull away from the chasing pack. With almost six weeks of the transfer window remaining, the top four clubs may well commit to deals worth a combined £1bn by the end of it. That is in stark contrast to last season's fifth and sixth-placed clubs, Newcastle United and Aston Villa, who have not yet spent £100m between them. Forward Xavi Simons and defender Jorrel Hato are the latest players Chelsea are making progress on, having already signed Liam Delap, João Pedro and Jamie Gittens and completed deals that were set up for this summer such as the captures of Dário Essugo, Willian Estêvão and Mamadou Sarr. Chelsea will offset their spending by making over £200m in sales, with Christopher Nkunku the latest example of the kind of interest their fringe players can generate. Bayern Munich, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and clubs in Italy have all registered an interest in Nkunku, while Villa are yet to receive a single realistic offer for one of their star players, Emiliano Martínez. A deal for RB Leipzig star Simons, who wants to join Chelsea and is valued at around £60m, is dependent on at least one sale being agreed but that should not be an issue with Nkunku now a wanted man, João Félix a target of Benfica and others, and the possibility of offers for Nicolas Jackson. Carney Chukwuemeka is one of at least three players Leipzig have asked about signing and the midfielder also has interest from the Premier League, with Chelsea wanting to sell him permanently rather than agreeing to another loan move to Borussia Dortmund. Sources are confident Chelsea can strike a deal to sign Simons, but they also retain interest in Alejandro Garnacho and Morgan Rogers. Chelsea's interest in Ajax defender Hato, who can play as a left-sided central defender or as a left-back, has been well documented and space would be made for his arrival with at least one defensive sale. Renato Veiga has been the subject of an approach from Atletico Madrid. Telegraph Sport reported this week that Liverpool have agreed to commit to almost £300m in transfer fees with the capture of Hugo Ekitike and they remain interested in Marc Guéhi, while Arsenal want to advance towards £200m by signing Viktor Gyokeres and may yet bid for Eberechi Eze. Manchester City could surpass £150m by nicking goalkeeper James Trafford from under the noses of Newcastle. The speed and power with which last season's top four clubs have moved is already prompting insider predictions that they will not be dislodged in the forthcoming season. One boardroom source told Telegraph Sport: 'The top four are pulling away. Look at what they are doing in comparison to the rest of the League.' Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are trying to keep up and prove that talk of the days of the traditional big six being over were premature, but they have a lot of ground to make up on Liverpool, Arsenal, City and Chelsea. According to figures taken from Transfermarkt, United have committed to deals worth £133m so far this summer and may well go higher if they can land a new striker. Spurs have spent £122m and hope to get to at least £181m by adding Morgan Gibbs-White. How much more business United and Tottenham can do is likely to depend on sales or further investment, but both clubs have signalled their intent to try to get back into the top six. Newcastle, Villa, Forest and Brighton and Hove Albion have broken into the top four and competed to break up the so-called traditional big six over recent years, but they are falling behind in the transfer window. Telegraph Sport this week documented Newcastle's difficulties after missing out on a host of top targets to rivals, while Villa's plans have been held up by an inability to sell the necessary players to generate funds and make space on the club's wage bill. It has been noticeable that while Chelsea have been able to find buyers for the likes of Veiga, Noni Madueke and Djordje Petrovic, Villa have not yet had realistic bids for star players such as Martínez, Ollie Watkins and Jacob Ramsey which could be key to unlocking their transfer window. Forest have lost Anthony Elanga to Newcastle and are battling Tottenham over Gibbs-White. They are one of a host of clubs to have registered an interest in Nkunku, but face serious competition for the former Leipzig star. Ben Doak and Dan Ndoye are two other targets, while there has also been interest in Ramsey. Villa are believed to have held discussions over offering a new contract to Ramsey, but a sale cannot be discounted just yet. Newcastle, Villa and Forest will all be hopeful of finishing the transfer window in good shape, but Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and City have already started on their dash to break clear.
