#SHOWBIZ: Siti Nurhaliza's cameo thrill
While she is not keen on having full-fledged television or movie roles, Siti once starred as a supporting character in an acclaimed musical.
That was Puan Sri Tiara Jacquelina's long-running 'P. Ramlee The Musical', which was first staged at Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur in 2008.
"That is my one and only credited starring role — I played the mysterious muse of Tan Sri P. Ramlee, Azizah, in the first season of Enfiniti Productions' musical," said Siti at the recent launch of her latest motion picture soundtrack, 'Sesal' for director Osman Ali's new horror film 'Telaga Suriram'.
The theme song's launch was held at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur and was also attended by Osman.
Siti said: "Actually, I have made some cameo appearances in Datuk Rosyam Nor's and my sister-in-law Zaiton Mohamad Jiwa's dramas, usually as myself.
"And when I'm not playing myself, I have virtually non-speaking roles, which can be missed by viewers by the blink of an eye!"
If Siti does get cameo roles on the big or small screen again, she would love to be a "pegawai" (government official) or a board of directors member.
"Even though acting has never been my forte, it is sometimes pretty cool to star in dramas or movies, especially if such dramas or movies have star-studded casts," she said.
Based on fan feedback over the years, Siti has learnt that playing officials suits her well, as she always "carries herself with dignity".
"Honestly, I don't think I look like an official in both the public and private sectors. But then, it's heartwarming to play such roles because they are respected by society."
Siti has occasionally played "superheroes", but only in her music videos.
"In some of my music videos, I'm a person who heals. It's a bit like some Michael Jackson videos, but wholly Malaysian and sweet!"
When asked about 'Sesal', which is composed and written by Nurzaidi Abdul Rahman, Siti said the song was recorded within three hours last month.
"I'm honoured and happy to sing it for a great film with a star-studded cast."
'Telaga Suriram' stars Maya Karin, Nabila Huda Suhaimi, Farid Kamil, Ellie Suriati Omar, Scha Alyahya and Puteri Rafasyah.
It tells the story of a mother whose little daughter mysteriously disappears near a well and is believed to have fallen into it and drowned.
Osman said: "She refuses to believe that the girl is dead and goes on her own search to uncover the truth behind her disappearance.
"She also must clear her name due to widespread belief among her fellow villagers that she killed her daughter."
Siti said theme songs are important avenues for singers' hits to be known.
"I always advise new singers to get their songs for dramas and movies," she said.
"That is because Malaysians love watching dramas and movies, and having good theme songs tied to good dramas and movies helps promote singers."
Siti said 'Sesal' is a poignant song that reflects the tragic story of the film's protagonist, a mother who loses her child in mysterious circumstances.
"As a mother, I can understand the passion and emotion of the character."
Siti's first movie soundtrack was 'Hati', the theme song of the 2007 historical movie '1957: Hati Malaya' directed by Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba.
In 2022, she sang 'Sama-Sama' the theme song for the Covid-19 pandemic movie 'Juang', which was also directed by Osman.
Osman said: 'It is always great to work with our much-loved Queen of Pop.
"She is a wonderful person who is professional and friendly, not to mention a person with superb work ethics."
Siti is working on an 11-song album of 'Lagu Asli' to be ready by December.
While she seldom sings with music maestro Datuk M. Nasir, she said it would be great to join him in his shows again.
Siti said: "Nasir's concerts are always entertaining and I always enjoy them.
"We last sang on the same stage in 2023, in Malam Bulan Dan Bintang at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur."
As for foreign acts, Siti would love to duet with Indonesian rock band Sheila On Seven.
"I'm a big fan of Indonesian music and while I have worked with balladeers such as Cakra Khan, Afgansyah Reza, Judika and Kris Dayanti over the years, I feels it is high time that I teamed up with a great group of rockers from the neighbouring country."

Six Sabahans in dance team at Spain event

Kota Kinabalu: Six dancers from Sabah are in the Malaysian team that will compete in Burgos, Spain, from July 3 to 12. They will compete with some 120,000 dancers from over 60 countries, showcasing the best of youth dance performances. Their journey reflects months of training, national qualifiers, and countless hours of hard work and sacrifice. Alyssa Lim, a parent accompanying the group, said they are aiming for as many medals as possible. 'Our dancers will perform both classical ballet and traditional folklore dance, combining discipline and national identity in every performance. 'They've prepared for months to reach this level, and we're proud to bring Malaysia's name to the international stage,' she said. One of the participants, Tiara Izz Zayani (11), was a champion in the Children's Folklore Trio at the DWC 2024 Grand Finals. This year, she has again qualified in the Children Solo in National and Folklore Category 2025 with her performance titled 'Kreasi Zapin Galit'. Tiara, who dreams of becoming a cultural dance ambassador, is passionate about promoting Malaysian heritage through movement. Another dancer, Ivana Iman Binti Mohammad Ezral, 10, placed seventh in classical ballet at the DWC 2024 Grand Finals. She will once again represent Malaysia this year. Faith Kennedy, 13, will perform classical ballet in the Children Solo Ballet Repertoire category. She believes this experience is more than just a competition, it's a chance for cultural exchange. #SHOWBIZ: Four popular stars try their hand at directing
MENTION the names of Fattah Amin, Zahiril Adzim, Siti Saleha Baharom and Janna Nick, and fans of television and cinema will automatically recognise them as credible and versatile actors and actresses of Malaysian showbiz. The four of them are set to make their mark as directors soon, and their maiden television dramas on TV3 are set to be screened this month. Fattah, Zahiril, Siti Saleha and Janna are participants in TV3's latest initiative 'Dari Layar Ke Lensa' (From Screen To Lens), which features actors and actresses taking on the role of directors. TOUCH Janna, Siti Saleha, Zahiril and Fattah will each bring his or her own touch to their directorial works, which encompass both comedy and serious drama. Fattah said: "Each telefilm presented is the result of our original ideas. Some are inspired by true stories, novels, and personal experiences." Siti Saleha said: "All of us were directly involved from the early stages of project development all the way to location scouting sessions." HIJAB Siti Saleha's drama is 'Rentak Di Hati' (July 5, 10pm) starring Auni Yusri, Zhen Ning, Khatijah Tan and Amanda Tan. It tells the story of a woman with a hijab who is a lawyer by day and a disc jockey by night. Fattah has 'Noktah Dosa' (July 12, 10pm) starring Nafiz Muaz, Elvina Mohamad, Fattah Amin and Jasmin Hamid. It is about a post-graduate student who falls in love with a prostitute while doing research. STORYTELLER Zahiril said: "I've largely been inspired by Mamat Khalid, who is a superb storyteller. "While I've yet to reveal my cast of actors and actresses, all I can say for now is that they are a popular ensemble cast. "This telemovie is really a comedy. I love comedies but recognise that they are a lot more difficult than dramas." COMEDY Zahiril has great respect for comedians because comedy is an art form, and it is never easy to make others laugh. "Being a director is quite a headache job, but it's a natural upgrade for any actor. As a director I must think on my feet all the time to make sure that my movie or drama is as good as it gets," he said. "It's always been my dream to one day become a director but having said that I will not abandon acting as I love it." COMMERCIALS Fattah said that he had directed television commercials in the past, and the good thing about being a director is that he can "change the storyline". "As a director, I can make the necessary amendments to ensure that the story is better," he said, adding that he was a fan of comedies. "I also love films that are inspired by novels, and dramas that are based on true stories," he said. INDONESIAN Fattah, who will be starring in an Indonesian horror film soon, said that he will be playing a character in his new telemovie, namely the former husband of the heroine (Elvina). "The film is entirely my idea, but the cast was suggested by the producers," he said. "I must admit that it is not easy for an actor to direct and act, it is kind of awkward." GOAT Janna said that her telemovie was "{interesting" as she had to direct a goat and some children. "Trisha plays a mother, while Aiman is her son who is very close to a goat," she said. "This telemovie is actually a serious drama, just what I like. And it is based on a true story." Janna filmed her drama a month ago, and it took her a week to wrap up. SKILLS She added that 'Dari Layar Ke Lensa' was a great platform for actors and actresses to upgrade their skills. "Directing has taught me a lot about teamwork, and it has always been my dream to direct a story which involves strong and independent women characters," said Janna, who admires Erma Fatima, Ogy Ahmad Daud, Datuk Fauziah Nawi and Ellie Suriaty Omar. EDUCATIONAL Siti Saleha said that she wanted her telemovie to be a light-hearted yet educational one. "It's based on a true story, but I've made it into a romantic comedy," she said, adding that the late Yasmin Ahmad was her biggest inspiration. "We took a week to complete it, and I'm happy that my ensemble cast worked great together and had great chemistry. "It is tiring being a director, but the end result is truly satisfying, especially when there is an interesting script." HUMAN Siti Saleha loves human interest stories and aspires to be a screenwriter someday. "I won't abandon acting, though. But in the years to come I'll be going for some directing and screenwriting courses, and that's a good upgrade. "I love stories about people, especially women, who face challenges, overcome them and emerge stronger."
