Church mouthpiece slams BJP's ‘double standards' amid push to woo Christians in Kerala

The Hindu13 hours ago
As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensifies its efforts to woo the Catholic community in Kerala ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, the Church has publicly raised concerns over what it calls the party's 'double standards' on the issue of Christian persecution.
An editorial published on Monday (July 14, 2025) in Deepika, the official mouthpiece of the Catholic Church in Kerala, highlights the growing number of attacks against Christians across India. The article, titled 'Applauding the hunter while patting the prey?' draws attention to these incidents in the backdrop of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent assertion that the BJP is preparing to take over power in Kerala in 2026.
Describing the 'double standards' adopted by the BJP as 'deeply humiliating', the editorial accuses the party of promoting contradictory narratives. While BJP leaders in States with significant Christian populations, such as Goa and Kerala, present themselves as allies of the community, the same party is allegedly enabling Christian persecution in northern States, Odisha and Maharashtra, it pointed out.
'The latest of this alarming development is now unfolding in Maharashtra, where BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar has promised cash rewards ranging from ₹3 lakh to ₹11 lakh to individuals who attack Catholic priests and missionaries,' the article states.
'The State's Revenue Minister, also from the BJP, has announced plans to introduce a stringent anti-conversion law. As a result, Christians in Maharashtra are now living in deep fear and anxiety. This is yet another example of the BJP's strategy of stoking communal tensions and anti-minority sentiment for political gain.'
The editorial argues that the BJP's political approach is two-pronged, which involves escalating majoritarian dominance while simultaneously eroding India's democratic pluralism.
'Historical records show that Christian presence in Maharashtra dates back to 1321. The renowned Bombay Archdiocese was established in 1886. What irregularities is the BJP government suddenly finding in the functioning of such a long-established institution that is now in its 140th year? Likewise, the Kalyan Diocese of the Syro-Malabar Church, founded in 1988, has operated for more than three decades without facing any allegations,' the editorial states.
Report cited
Citing a report by the United Christian Forum, the article notes that 4,316 incidents of violence against Christians were recorded between 2014 and 2024. In 2024 alone, there were 834 attacks, compared to 127 in 2014, when Narendra Modi first assumed office as Prime Minister.
The editorial criticises the BJP for 'remaining silent' on such rising attacks while simultaneously trying to court Christians in Kerala. 'Before seeking the support of the Christian community, the BJP must first end its double standards and bring clarity to its stance on minorities,' the piece concludes.

Govt cornered on exam bungling; Cong seeks CBI probe, walks out

Raipur: The Opposition Congress staged a walkout in the on the first day of the monsoon session on Monday, over alleged irregularities in the RI examination, demanding a CBI probe into the matter. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Replying to the concerns raised during the Question Hour, revenue minister Tankram Verma admitted anomalies and informed that the case is with the EOW, assuring strict action against the guilty before the next session. The din in the assembly concerned the alleged irregularities in the departmental examination for Revenue Inspectors (RI). BJP MLA Rajesh Munat raised the issue, claiming it occurred under the previous Congress govt, while the opposition countered that the exam took place under the current BJP administration in Jan 2024, with results declared in Feb. Congress MLA and former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel demanded the CBI probe. Revenue minister Tankram Verma acknowledged the irregularities and said a five-member committee confirmed it. He informed that the case was handed over to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for a detailed probe and promised action before the next Assembly session. Heated exchanges between ruling and opposition members over responsibility and delay in action led to a walkout by Opposition MLAs. On the other hand, BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar questioned the decision to transfer the probe to the EOW, to which Verma replied that the department itself referred the matter. MLA Munat highlighted that the examination was conducted barely a week after the minister took charge of the department. He questioned why no action was taken despite the investigation by a team of five senior officers confirming irregularities. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Verma responded that the inquiry committee concluded that the presented documents did not fall under the category of evidence and the EOW is currently investigating. Former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel inquired whether the examination took place before or after the current BJP govt came to power. Verma confirmed that the examination was held in Jan 2024 and the results were declared in Feb. This response led to a strong protest in the Assembly, with opposition MLAs accusing the BJP govt of irregularities. Baghel alleged attempts to shield the culprits and asked if the matter would be investigated by the CBI. BJP MLA Dharamlal Kaushik retorted, asking if Baghel trusted the CBI. Following this, the Opposition staged a walkout from the Assembly. Earlier, BJP MLA Munat had asked the minister about the status of the home department's inquiry, when action would be taken against the culprits, and the total number of candidates who appeared for the examination. The minister informed the Assembly that even siblings were found seated together in the examination. The general administration department had written to the home department for an inquiry, which in turn responded that the concerned department was competent to handle the matter. The case has now been handed over to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) as part of the govt's stand on a 'zero' tolerance policy on corruption, and an investigation commenced. Verma affirmed that no one would be spared, and action would be taken against those found guilty, similar to the ongoing inquiry into irregularities in the Bharatmala project. The revenue minister also said that the recruitment would provide necessary staff to the revenue department, streamlining its operations. Tributes Offered To Former Governor & Ex-Cabinet Minister from CG Earlier, the Assembly paid tribute to former Chhattisgarh governor Shekhar Dutt and Surendra Bahadur Singh, the former king of Sakti princely state and ex-cabinet minister, following their demise.

Digvijaya reaches Harda, meets students lathi-charged by police

Bhopal: Former chief minister Digvijaya Singh reached Harda on Monday to meet students who were allegedly lathi-charged by the police in the hostels during the protest by Karni Sena volunteers. On Sunday, police resorted to lathi-charge, use of water cannons, and firing tear gas to control the Karni Sena protest. Speaking to reporters after reaching Harda, Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh said, "The way students, even girl students, were lathi-charged in the hostels… four to five persons were surrounded by the police. Take them to the police station or wherever they are to be taken. But students being beaten up is not acceptable." State BJP President Hemant Khandelwal countered the Congress' allegations and said, "BJP respects all communities. We are with everyone. Congress wants to divide society. BJP works to take all communities along. So far as the Rajput community is concerned, we have a number of leaders from that society and our party respects and values them." Former LOP Ajay Singh, who is also a Thakur leader like Digvijaya Singh in the Congress party, described the police lathi charge on Karni Sena as unfortunate. He said that the use of force is not the solution to every problem. "This worsens the situation instead of improving it. And this is what happened. Now the protest of Karni Sena is gradually spreading to other districts as well. Before the situation becomes more unpleasant, the administration should find a solution through mutual dialogue," he said. Ajay Singh urged chief minister Mohan Yadav to take the entire incident seriously and initiate talks with functionaries of the Karni Sena to restore peace.

Delhi Cuts Approval Time From 120 Days To 20 For Green Industries

The Delhi Government has slashed the approval time for Consent to Operate (CTO) from 120 days to just 20 days for Green Category industries. Applications will now be deemed approved if no action is taken within that period - a move government says will end long-standing delays and procedural bottlenecks. The announcement was made on Monday by Environment and Industries Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa who called the reform "historic," claiming it will benefit more than 65 categories of low-pollution industries operating in the capital. "This is a long-awaited change. We've done what could not be done in the last 50 years," the Minister said at a press conference, thanking Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for backing the reform. "Most of these sectors are driven by small and medium enterprises, and they've been trapped in red tape for far too long." The move is aimed at simplifying operations for non-polluting units such as apparel manufacturers, cold storage facilities, ayurvedic medicine producers (without boilers), packaging, furniture, toys, and aluminium product makers, among others. Under the new rules, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) will have 20 days to decide on a CTO application. If no response comes within that time, the clearance will be granted automatically - no further follow-ups or documentation required. The reform will take effect from August 2025. According to the Minister, the change is part of a broader push to streamline governance and improve ease of doing business in the capital. A Single Window System is also being rolled out across departments to integrate approvals and cut down manual processes. "This is the end of the old License Raj mentality," Mr Sirsa said. "We are shifting to a trust-based, time-bound model that gives businesses the confidence to invest and expand." Industry representatives have welcomed the announcement but feel implementation on the ground would be key. The reform also aligns with the Centre's push for Ease of Doing Business and is being projected by the BJP-led Delhi government as part of its commitment to make the capital more business-friendly - especially for the MSME sector. For small and medium-sized industries, long caught in approval limbo, this could be the break they've been waiting for. But as the deadline-driven model replaces months of paperwork, one question hangs in the air - will it work as promised when the first applications hit the system?
