Mahendra Singh Dhoni, known as "Captain Cool," is celebrating his 44th birthday on Monday, July 7. After leading India to three ICC titles - ODI World Cup, the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy, Dhoni retired from international cricket nearly five years ago but his presence in the sport remains as influential as ever. The five-times IPL winning captain recently featured in the cash rich-league for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during the 2025 season.
At his 44th birthday, let's take a look at seven remarkable records of MS Dhoni that may never be broken: https://zeenews.india.com/photos/sports/7-special-records-of-ms-dhoni-that-may-never-be-broken-check-in-pics-2928095 Updated:Jul 07, 2025, 07:29 PM IST 1. Only Captain to Win All Three Major ICC Trophies
1 / 7
MS Dhoni is the only captain in cricket history to win all three major ICC titles - the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the 2011 ODI Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. This monumental achievement is unlikely to be replicated by any other captain in the future. 2. Most International Matches As Captain
2 / 7
MS Dhoni holds the world record for captaining a team in most international matches. He led India in 332 international matches across all formats (60 Tests, 200 ODIs, 72 T20Is). With his longevity and consistency, Dhoni surpassed Ricky Ponting's record of captaining in 324 matches. Given his current trend of shorter captaincy tenures, this record of Dhoni is nearly untouchable. 3. Captain To Win Most IPL Matches
3 / 7
MD Dhoni holds the record for winning the most number of matches as a captain in IPL history. He has won 136 out of 235 matches in IPL. Close to Dhoni on the list comes Rohit Sharma with 87 wins. Since, Rohit doesn't captain in IPL now, it is very difficult for anyone to break this record of Dhoni in the cash-rich league. 4. Oldest Captain To Win An IPL Trophy
4 / 7
At 42 years and 325 days, MS Dhoni became the oldest captain to win an IPL trophy in history after CSK beat Gujarat Titans in a last-ball thriller in the final of the 2023 season. It's almost impossible for any other captain to win an IPL trophy at that old age. 5. Most Matches As Captain In IPL History
5 / 7
MS Dhoni has played as captain in the IPL for a record 235 times, the highest for any cricketer so far. His record of most matches as captain looks safe as the next player with most matches as skipper in the IPL is Rohit Sharma (158), who is no longer a captain of any team. 6. Most Stumpings In International Cricket
6 / 7
MS Dhoni's lightning-fast wicket-keeping skills helped him create a record of 195 stumpings across all international formats (123 in ODIs, 38 in Tests, 34 in T20Is). The rarity of wicket-keepers playing all formats extensively in the current era makes this record extremely difficult to break. 7. Most Runs In ODIs At Number 6 Or Lower
7 / 7
Notably, MS Dhoni is the only player to score over 10,000 runs in ODIs while batting at number 6 or lower, amassing 10,268 runs. His ability to rebuild innings and accelerate in the lower order was a benchmark that is unlikely to be surpassed by any modern lower-order batter.

State pulls out of Pro Govinda League even as prize amount reaches record Rs 1.5 crore

Mumbai: Sixteen local govinda teams bearing names like Nagpur Ninjas, Lucknow Panthers and Surat Titans will bid for cash prizes worth Rs 1.5 crore during this year's dahi handi festival, thanks to an IPL style bid by owners from different parts of India. However, the Maharashtra govt will no longer co-host or sponsor the event as it did during the previous two years. The organiser, Pro Govinda League, has announced its highest ever prize amount of Rs 1.5 crore for winning teams this season. The championship will be held at the NSCI Dome on Aug 7, 8 and 9. On July 5, a competitive auction was held wherein 16 govinda 'pathaks' were acquired by various team owners. Pro Govinda League was started by Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik in Thane in 2018. In 2023-24 the state govt had sponsored the event during his party peer Eknath Shinde 's tenure as chief minister. This year that partnership has ended. Organisers say the move is not linked to having a BJP CM in Devendra Fadnavis. But we have managed to get more private sponsors and telecast partners. We held an auction for 16 teams and have signed a three-year contract with the players and franchisees. Video from MS Dhoni's low-key 44th birthday celebrations goes viral

Ranchi (Jharkhand) [India], July 7 (ANI): As expected, legendary cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni celebrated his 44th birthday in a low-key way. A video has been doing the rounds on the internet in which Dhoni can be seen cutting his birthday cake in the presence of his JSCA stadium staff in Ranchi. Captain Cool was all smiles. Lauded for his calmness under pressure and his tactical excellence, Dhoni has made a name for himself. He has given back to his country and the city of Ranchi, everything it could have asked him for. Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020 and now plays for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), With 17,266 international runs, 829 dismissals and 538 matches across formats for India, Dhoni is widely respected. Apart from his sharp wicket-keeping skills, Dhoni pushed the envelope, contributing valuable runs. He formed a formidable middle-order with Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina. Dhoni's strongest format is the ODIs. In 350 ODIs, he scored 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57. He scored 10 centuries and 73 fifties for India, with the best score of 183*. He is India's sixth-highest scorer in ODIs (with Sachin Tendulkar at the top with 18,426 runs). The fact that he managed to score 10,000-plus runs at an average of over 50 while coming down the order makes his statistics even more astonishing. He led India in 200 ODI matches, winning 110, losing 74. Five games were tied, while 11 failed to produce a result. He has a winning percentage of 55. Dhoni has won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013 for India as a skipper. Dhoni, known as Chennai Super Kings' 'Thala' (leader), played 98 T20Is for India, scoring 1,617 runs at an average of 37.60, at a strike rate of 126.13. He has two half-centuries in the format, with the best score of 56. He was the winning captain of India's ICC T20 WC 2007 winning team. 'Mahi' led India in 72 T20Is, winning 41, losing 28, one being tied and two failing to produce results. His win percentage is 56.94. Coming to his long-format career, Dhoni played 90 matches, scoring 4,876 runs at an average of 38.09. He scored six centuries and 33 half-centuries, with the best score of 224. He is the 14th-highest scorer for India in Tests. As a captain, he led India in 60 Test matches, out of which they won 27 matches, lost 18 and drew 15. With a win percentage of 45.00, he is one of India's most successful skippers across all eras. He led Team India to the number one ranking in the ICC Test Rankings. He is also the only Indian skipper to whitewash Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, doing so in the 2010-11 and 2012-13 series. Dhoni is just as reputable in franchise cricket, being the sixth-highest run-getter in IPL history, with 5,439 runs in 278 matches at an average of 38.30, including 24 fifties, at a strike rate of over 137. He has secured five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles with CSK, making the franchise one of the most popular entities in the sporting world, largely on the basis of his own brand and name. Crowds follow and different fan clubs chant 'Dhoni' 'Dhoni' in unison when the batting legend makes even as much as an appearance inside his dressing room, gearing up for a possible chance at batting. When Dhoni broke into the national team in 2004, nobody could have imagined the heights the then-23-year-old would go on to achieve as a wicketkeeper-batter. His quickfire stumping and catching abilities, massive sixes, and the trademark helicopter shot will no doubt stay fan favourites for generations to come. (ANI)

"The spark we saw, I felt this boy is something special...": Former India selector Kiran More recalls first impressions of Dhoni on his 44th birthday

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 7 (ANI): As MS Dhoni turned 44 on Monday, tributes poured in from all corners of the cricketing world. Kiran More, who played a crucial role in identifying Dhoni's potential at the domestic level and backing him for the national team, recalled the star hitter's talent as he made his international debut in 2004. More shared his first impression of the Ranchi-born cricketer, who would go on to become one of India's most iconic captains. 'At that time, if you looked at our batting order, you had Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman -- all these players. Yuvraj Singh was also there. But I felt we needed an aggressive player, who could come and hit fours and sixes, utilize the Powerplay, make runs in 15 overs, and also in the middle overs,' More told JioHotstar. More explained that while India's top order was stacked with technically sound and dependable batters, the team lacked a power-hitter who could change the game in a few overs. 'We were looking for someone who could hit sixes and boundaries -- that kind of aggressive player wasn't visible. See, the top players were all of one mould. But MS Dhoni's strength -- that power-hitting -- we were looking for a different kind of player like that, to balance the batting order. If you want to make 100 in 10 overs, you can,' he noted. 'We gave many wicketkeepers chances, but the spark we saw in Dhoni -- I felt this boy is something special, something different. We were taking chances. He was raw. From there, we picked him and gave him a chance,' More added. It was a gamble that would pay off in historic fashion. Dhoni led India to some of its greatest triumphs, including the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. Rated highly for his calmness under pressure which would make most crumble helplessly, and his tactical excellence, Dhoni, since his international debut in 2004 till now, during these last few years of his career with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has made a name for himself as one of India's most beloved sons, who has given back to his country and city of Ranchi, everything it could have asked him for. With 17,266 international runs, 829 dismissals and 538 matches across formats for India, Dhoni is not only amongst the world's greatest players but also a revolutionary.
