Tigress, 4 cubs poisoned with carbofuran pesticide in Karnataka: Probe
The samples and viscera from the deceased tigers were analysed at the Forensic Science Laboratory and Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals Laboratory to determine the exact cause of death, Heeralal said Monday. The state government on Monday also suspended Y Chakrapani, Deputy Conservator of Forests, MM Hills wildlife division.
Earlier, the Karnataka government had suspended Assistant Conservator of Forests Gajanana Hegde of M M Hills Wildlife Division, and Range Forest Officer-cum-Surveyor Madesh.
The government order said the salaries for outsourced employees were not disbursed for March, April and May, 2025, leading to a protest by watchers in front of the DCF office on 23 June. The order said that the officers have failed to perform their basic duty of ensuring timely payment of wages to watchers, even though the funds were made available at the end of April, 2025.
According to the investigation, the tigress had hunted a cow and dragged it into the forest. Miscreants deliberately sprayed carbofuran, an odorless and highly toxic pesticide, on the carcass and after the tiger family consumed it, they succumbed to the lethal substance, Heeralal said.
Three persons identified as Konappa, Madaraju, and Nagaraj, all residents of Koppa village within the MM Hills sanctuary, were arrested on June 29 and charged under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and the Karnataka Forest Act 1963.
The breakthrough came after Shivanna, the father of the Madaraju, during questioning revealed the involvement of three persons, including his son.
Madaraju initially fled after his father's arrest but was later arrested through Shivanna's cooperation. According to a police officer, the tigress and her cubs were killed in retaliation following tiger attacks on cattle. The accused deliberately sprayed pesticide on a cattle carcass, said the officer.
The Karnataka forest department had formed a high-level inquiry committee led by B P Ravi, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, and gave it 14 days to submit a comprehensive report. The Union Environment Ministry had also formed an SIT to probe into the incident.

13 men held for consuming liquor in Gujarat during birthday party, 26 women served notice
The police arrested 13 men for allegedly consuming liquor at a birthday party near Gujarat's Sanand in Ahmedabad district on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. They also issued a notice to 26 women who tested positive for alcohol but released them, citing night-time arrest regulations. Pratik Subkaran Sanghi (38), who allegedly hosted the party at a banquet hall of Glade One Golf Club, was among those arrested. A joint team from Sanand, Aslali, Changodar and Bopal police stations, along with the Local Crime Branch (LCB), conducted the raid around 12:15 am on Monday after receiving a tip-off. The police said Sanghi is a director of several companies. Police officers said they found around 90 people at the venue. After conducting breathalyzer tests, they detained 39 of them and sent their blood samples for tests. 'Since we couldn't arrest the women at night as per rules, we served them a notice and let them go. We placed the men under arrest,' said Superintendent of Police (Rural Ahmedabad) Om Prakash Jat. Jat added, 'We're investigating where the liquor came from, the role of the accused, and whether the club authorities were involved. We also seized hookahs from the site and sent them to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to check for narcotics.' The police seized 11 bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor and mobile phones worth Rs 1.6 lakh. Besides Sanghi, the arrested men include Ritesh Rajan Vazirani (38), Rushabh Vimal Duggal (28), Viraj Yagnesh Vitthalani (36), Ninad Kamlesh Parikh (43), Amit Suresh Bajaj (41), Raj Balkrushna Agrawal (37), Nikhil Surendra Bajaj (38), Dushyant Kishor Goswami (36), Varun Manoj Jain (36), Amit Shiv Jogiya (36), Priyam Bimal Parikh (37), and Sajal Sanjeevkumar Agrawal (35).

Complainant seeks confiscation of suspected leopard tooth jewellery worn by Union Minister Suresh Gopi
The suspected leopard tooth pendant, which Union Minister and actor Suresh Gopi was recently found sporting in a chain, shall be confiscated and a scientific analysis carried out, the complainant in the case has sought. The complainant, A. A. Muhammad Hashim, an office-bearer of the INTUC Young Workers Council, raised the demand while giving his statement to forest officials on Monday (July 21, 2025) . The Pattikkad Range Forest Officer had summoned Mr. Hashim, who had approached the Divisional Forest Officers of Thrissur and Kannur with the complaint, on the day to record his statements. Mr. Hashim also raised the demand for ascertaining the period of the making of the ornament worn by Mr. Gopi, apprehending that the ornament could be 'manipulated.' Media links of the visuals aired by TV channels in which the actor was seen wearing the suspected ornament were handed over to the officials. The complainant also demanded that the original visuals be obtained from the TV channels to check the veracity of the complaint. In his complaint, Mr. Hashim had stated that he had seen TV visuals of Mr. Gopi wearing the ornament at two functions, one in Thrissur and another in Kannur. Prompted by Vedan incident Mr. Hashim said he decided to take up the case following social media discussions that ensued after the arrest of popular rapper Vedan (Hirandas Murali) for wearing a suspected leopard-tooth-studded pendant. The Forest department acted against the singer after being alerted by police, which arrested him for possessing ganja. The investigation in the case was progressing, according to forest officials. Possession of a wildlife trophy, which includes cured and uncured animal parts, is an offence under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. Those found guilty can get a jail term of up to seven years and a fine or both.

High Court acquits all 12 convicted in 2006 Mumbai train blasts case
The Bombay High Court on Monday acquitted all 12 men who were convicted of the 2006 Mumbai train bombings that killed 189 people and injured over 800. The acquittal came nearly two decades after the serial blasts shook Mumbai's suburban railway network.A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Gauri Godse read out the operative part of the order, pointing out serious flaws in the prosecution's case. The court observed that key witnesses were unreliable, identification parades were questionable, and confessional statements were extracted through defence had raised serious questions about the test identification parade. Many witnesses remained silent for unusually long periods, some over four years, and then suddenly identified the accused. This is abnormal," the bench noted. One witness, the court found, had deposed in multiple unrelated crime branch cases, including the Ghatkopar blast case, making his testimony 'unreliable'. Several others failed to explain how they could suddenly recall and identify the accused after judges also highlighted procedural lapses. "Some witnesses were not even examined during the trial. As for recoveries like RDX and other explosive material, the prosecution could not establish that the evidence was sacrosanct until it reached the Forensic Science Laboratory," the bench "non-application of mind", the High Court concluded that the prosecution had "thoroughly failed" to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. "It is difficult to say that the prosecution can sustain its charges," the bench held, quashing the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court's October 2015 judgment that had sentenced five to death and seven to life the 12 originally convicted, one, Kamal Ansari, died in 2021 due to Covid-19 while lodged in Nagpur prison. The remaining 11, who have spent 19 years behind bars, are now set to walk Yug Mohit Chaudhry, representing some of the accused, said, "This judgment will be a sign of hope for those wrongly incarcerated". The bench responded, "We did our duty and it was our responsibility".Public Prosecutor Raja Thakare, while acknowledging the verdict, said the judgment would serve as a "guiding light" for future 2006 Mumbai train blasts remain one of India's deadliest terror attacks, with seven bombs exploding in first-class compartments during peak hours on the Western Railway line.- Ends
