THIS is only the second series of Karen Pirie, but it feels like Val McDermid's creation has been a member of the Society of Maverick Detectives (Scottish Division) forever.
Like some sarky granddaughter of Taggart or a gallus cousin to Rebus, the character is so well-written and performed she is instantly believable - even if she does look like she's off to the big school after summer.
Possibly the worst-dressed television detective ever, Pirie (played by Lauren Lyle) is back with her polo shirts, badly cut suits, three for a pound sports socks and - the horror - bum bag. Not even Prada could make that last item fashionable, but with Pirie it's all about the practicalities. Where else would she keep her phone and a spare chip for her shoulder?
One thing she can't complain about is career progression. She is now a DI, her second giant leap up the ladder. While in two minds about this rapid rise into management, she does like that title.
With more power comes a high-profile case, the biggest there is on the books. In 1984, oil heiress Catriona Grant and her baby son were kidnapped at gunpoint in a case dubbed 'Scotland's John Paul Getty' by the media. (Really? Sounds naff even for the 1980s.) Mother and child were never seen again.
When remains are discovered in a quarry the investigation is rebooted with Pirie in charge. She has a whole squad room of helpers, including secret boyfriend DS Phil Parhatka and sidekick DC Jason Murray, aka 'Mint'. Bel the blogger, who spent series one nipping at Pirie's ankles, is back too.
By far the biggest obstacle in Pirie's path is Catriona's oil tycoon father, a man used to getting his own way. Played by James Cosmo, the scenes between 'Sir Broderick' and Pirie crackle with tension. The old lion with the still terrifying roar versus a squeak of a lassie. Not that Sir Brodie calls her any such thing: it is left to another character, later in the three-part series, to address the elephant in the room that is Pirie's youth and stature.
With six hours to fill, lots of hares are sent running. Slick editing makes the time fly by, while local viewers can enjoy a game of spot the location (bags I the Barrowland doubling as a Kirkcaldy nightclub).
The series is not above the odd cliche, starting with moodily lit interrogation rooms (see 24 Hours in Police Custody. Similarly, Pirie and her superior, DCS Simon Lees (Steve John Shepherd) retain the stereotypically surly maverick and shouty boss relationship.
Secondary characters are given room to shine, with 'Mint' still the best of the packet as the target of Pirie's teasing. What is clever about Pirie's character, and Lyle's interpretation of her, is that she is surrounded by people yet remains a stranger. She's tough yet not above tears, empathetic yet cold, driven but for what reason? Who is she, really?
It's a measure of this belter of a crime drama that we cannot wait to find out.

Romeo Beckham is now sporting the same buzz-cut as his famous father David after his dad shaved his head while on board their yacht in St Tropez on Friday. However, it was perhaps a risky move given that David, 50, recently suffered a major hair disaster when the guard came off his clippers leaving him with a triangle shape at the front of his head. Romeo shared the picture on Instagram after his brother Cruz stole his father's look the day before and larked around on board wearing a pair of tight white pants. Fans were loving the picture of Romeo and David and flocked to the comment section to mock David, writing: 'lol don't let the guard on the cutters fall off (laughing emojis).'; 'HOW ARE YOU TRUSTING @davidbeckham AFTER HIS (rolling on the floor laughing emojis)'; 'Oh lord your trusting your dad with the clippers after his mishap (laughing emojis). A grown man can get serious beach body envy at this time of year. The physique in the mirror and on the sun lounger does not always compare favourably to the form on social media. Guys flexing their abs and glutes dominate social media, with even older fellas – like the permanently vacationing playboy Gianluca Vacchi, and the gold standard, David Beckham, still magnificent in his tighty-whitey briefs – eliciting a Proustian splash of memories soaked in sun and chlorine. And now his son Cruz has been spotted in a pair of similarly tiny trunks – a pair of £410 Prada budgie-smugglers. Twenty summers ago, I took a swimming lesson with the world's greatest pool boy. Pierre Gruneberg, then a spry 73, was lithe and tanned; a magnificent poster boy for daily aerobic exercise and very good living. He had spent the last 55 years as maître nageur at Club Dauphin, the idyllic Med-side swimming pool at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat in the south of France. Even more impressive than Gruneberg's pecs was his roster of students. Down the years, he dished out advice on stroke, rhythm and breath to superstars including Picasso, Charlie Chaplin, Ralph Lauren, Liza Minelli, Tina Turner and a suite of presidents, each leaving their egos in the changing rooms to listen to his aquatic wisdom. As Gruneberg told me: 'All men are equal when they are wearing nothing but their swimming costumes." For 'swimming costume', of course, read 'Speedo'. Gruneberg wore Speedos every day of his working life. His male clients, too, were obliged to dress thus. In 1903, a law was passed by the French government stipulating that men must only wear tight-fitting swimming trunks at public pools – the idea being that less material housed less dirt and bacteria and was therefore more hygienic. Egalitarian swimming attire was a great social leveller, just as my pool pal Pierre had noted. Founded in Sydney in 1914 by the Scottish emigrant Alexander MacRae, the Speedo brand (or, as the French like to call the trunks, ' un Speedo ') saw an opportunity and quickly became the default setting and nickname for men's briefs during summer vacations. These were the days when men aspired to look athletic and competitive during the holidays, all-over-tanning like a pro swimmer. From Mykonos to Marbella, Bridlington to Bournemouth, even the most terminally un-Olympic men wore the 'Aussie cossie'. Long before Orlebar Brown and Villebrequin luxed-up swimwear, a boy purchased his trunks from a sporting retailer, and it was Speedo or nothing. (My parents knew families who preferred 'nothing', by the way, but let's not go there – it's too triggering.) In the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, 27 of the 29 gold medalists wore the brand. At the 1972 Olympics, Mark Spitz became the pin-up boy for health, efficiency and homoeroticism thanks to his seven gold medals and iconic stars and stripes Speedos. Me? I wore them at school; we all did. It wasn't embarrassing because, just like verucas and watery vending machine hot chocolate, Speedos were an integral part of the public swimming pool experience. It was a bit different squeezing my thirtysomething frame into a pair years later when taking to the water with the buff Pierre Gruneberg. Would I do that now? With the likes of David Beckham to compete with, and young Cruz following suit? Not. A. Chance. And yet… As the occasionally Speedo-clad James Bond might say: never say never. With each passing summer, men's swimming clobber is getting briefer and shorts shorter. Designer poolside collections are currently dominated by Speedo-like swimmers from Gucci, Hermès and Dior. And right now, with another heatwave up on us, a man's biggest summer flex is not his wristwatch or his girlfriend – it's his body.
