'Hitwoman' disguised in burka accused of attempting to gun down shop owner

Daily Mail22-07-2025
An American hitwoman dressed in a niqab and a burka tried to shoot dead a shopkeeper outside his home in Birmingham, UK, as part of a 'deadly' feud involving two families, a court heard.
Video footage shown to jurors allegedly shows Aimee Betro, 45, pointing a firearm at her intended victim as he arrives home in a car but her gun jams and he manages to speed away.
Hours later Betro returned to the victim's home and fired three shots through the window, Birmingham Crown Court was told.
Betro, originally from Wisconsin appeared in the dock Monday.
She denies three charges of conspiracy to murder, possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, and a charge related to the alleged importation of ammunition into the UK.
Opening the case, Tom Walkling KC, prosecuting told jurors that Betro had been involved in a conspiracy with two other men as part of their vendetta against businessman Aslat Mahumad.
Walkling said 'revenge was the motive' after Mohammed Nazir, 30, and Mohammed Aslam, 56, were injured during a clash at Muhamad's clothing store in July 2018.
'On the seventh of September 2019 in a suburban cul-de-sac in South Yardley a would-be assassin tried to shoot a man called Sikander Ali at close range outside his house.
'The assassin was a woman who tried to disguise her appearance by wearing a niqab - a face covering - and what looked like a burka.'
He told jurors the gun jammed but she was 'not deterred' and 'returned to the same address on the same street a few hours later and used the now-working gun to shoot three bullets through the bedroom windows of the victim's home.'
The court was told her two co-onspirators Nazir and his father Aslam, from Derby, had already been tried and convicted over the plot.
Both have been convicted of conspiracy to murder while Nazir was also convicted of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
Walkling said Betro was in contact with Nazir before she flew to Manchester Airport in August 2019.
He said Betro had two phones - a normal 'day to day' cell which she used regularly - and a 'dirty phone' - bought before the shooting.
Walkling said the motive for the murder was 'revenge'.
He said Nazir and Aslam were involved in a 'vendetta' with a family in Birmingham, specifically clothes shop owner called Mahumad, whose son was Sikander Ali.
Both men lived at an address in Measham Grove, South Yardley where Betro allegedly tried to murder Ali and where she fired bullets through the window.
The court heard that in July 2018 there was a disorder at Mahumad's shop which resulted in damage to the premises and Nazir, Aslam, and Aslat Mahumad all getting injured.
Jurors were told that in August Betro went to Birmingham and hired a Mercedes C Class car from Enterprise at Birmingham Airport.
She then stayed at a hotel in Derby for two nights before traveling to London and Brighton before returning to Birmingham and then back to Derby.
The court was played a video clip - from Nazir's phone - showing a gun being fired into the ground three days before the attempted shooting in Birmingham which prosecutors said was a bid to 'test' the weapon.
Walkling said: 'It's a firearm that fires the same caliber of ammunition that police recovered from outside the victim's home a few days after this video was made.'
The 'metadata' for the clip shows it was created on September 4, 2019, the day Betro was in Derby and three minutes before Nazir added Betro's snapchat details into his phone.
Walkling said to jurors: 'You have to ask yourself was Betro there with Nazir testing this gun?
Other surveillance footage from Rotunda hotel in Birmingham shows Betro in a summer dress, hoodie, rucksack and flip flops.
While at the hotel on September 6 she phoned Mahumad, claiming she wanted to buy the car he was selling online.
Walkling said: 'Mr Mahumad recalls being called by a woman with an American accent... He was confused, as he hadn't listed his number online.
'The woman said she wanted to buy the car today, but Mr Mahumad said she could see it tomorrow.
'As I'm sure you have guessed, ladies and gentlemen, we say the woman with the American accent was this defendant, Aimee Betro, and that she was calling Mr Mahumad as a pretext to set up a chance to kill him. And who else could it be? she had the phone she bought it only hours before.'
Later that night she met up with Nazir, who went with her to her hotel room where they ordered food before he traveled back to Derby with his father in their transit van.
The following day she tried to kill Aslat Mahumad's son, jurors were told.
The court heard she left the hotel and bought another cheap mobile phone and SIM card - all caught on CCTV.
After buying a Mercedes using a false name, she called Mahumad once again on the pretext of looking at a car. Mahumad said he couldn't meet, and that she could meet someone else with the car the next day.
Later that day she met with Nazir and Aslam with phone data showing her dirty phone connected to Nazir's wireless network.
The Mercedes was later seen at the entrance to Measham Grove. Mr Walking said the driver 'appears to be wearing a face-covering, a niqab'.
He said at 7.22pm hours, Betro drove onto Measham Grove and waited for her target.
At 9.10pm Sikander Ali pulled onto Measham Grove in his black SUV which was all caught on camera.
In video footage played to the court, a woman which the prosecution said was Betro, can be seen approaching the SUV and firing but the gun jams.
She later dumped the Mercedes. Police found a black glove with Betro's DNA inside.
'Further proof if any was needed ... that she was the gunwoman in the burka',' Mr Walkling said.
Six minutes later she was again caught on CCTV shown to the jury from close to where the car was dumped wearing a summer dress, hoodie and flip flops and carrying two bags.
Betro then sent text messages to her intended target, the court was told. Screenshots of the texts were shown to the jury.
She said to him: 'Where are you hiding? followed by 'Stop playing hide and seek you are lucky it jammed'.
Betro then called another taxi to take her back to Measham Grove.
Jurors were show CCTV of a figure matching Betro's description firing three shots in to the family home.
'Ladies and gentlemen the gun didn't jam that time did it?' Mr Walkling said.
'Did you note, the hoodie, and the handbag worn across her body, just as Betro was dressed earlier.
'Three shots were fired. Three bullets went through the windows of Aslat Muhamad's family home. Three bullet casings were found in the street outside.'
Walkling said Betro then got back into the taxi and during the journey she sent a text message to Mahumad which said: 'You wanna rip me off you wanna be a drug king go look at your house watch your back i'll be shedding blood'.
She flew back to the U.S. the following day from Manchester Airport.
Nazir flew out to join her three days later. The trial continues.

Police launch desperate manhunt after man is seen prowling streets of Lancashire wearing just a gimp mask

Police have launched an urgent manhunt after a nude man was seen prowling the streets of Lancashire in a gimp mask. The odd sighting was captured on doorbell cameras as the man passed houses in the town of Lytham at around 1am on Friday, July 18. The unnerving footage was later shown to Lancashire Police, with the force now issuing a desperate public appeal for information. Officers have also requested that any individuals with similar CCTV footage get in touch. Describing the bizarre incident as 'concerning', a spokesperson for the force said: 'We are aware of a concerning video circulating on social media of a naked male wearing a face covering walking around Lytham in the early hours of the morning. 'This occurred in the area of Westby Street, Cleveland Road and Bannister Street. 'We can confirm this incident occurred on the 18th July 2025 at approximately 00.50am. 'This incident was not initially reported to police and has only been brought to our attention after it has been viewed on Facebook.' The spokesperson confirmed that Fylde Rural Task Force are currently in the process of conducting both CCTV and house enquiries. They also added that the publish should be 'reassured' that officers are 'taking this matter seriously'. The shocking incident is just the latest in a run of gimp men sighted across the UK, with the country in the grips of an ongoing crisis. In 2019, residents of the sleepy Somerset village of Claverham spotted a man clad head to toe in latex, skulking around a quiet cul-de-sac. On his mask, he had crudely etched a face with bright red crosses for eyes and a snarling cut mouth wrenched into a permanent smile. Dubbed the 'Somerset Gimp', Joshua Hunt, from Claverham, was found guilty in late 2023 after he scared female drivers while dressed in a black gimp suit and mask. While he avoided jail, Hunt was banned for five years from wearing masks, dressing in all-in-one-black outfits at night and 'crawling, wriggling or writhing on the ground' in public. During a hearing at Bristol Magistrates' Court in 2023, he was convicted of two offences under the Public Order Act of intentionally causing harassment, alarm or distress. Lawrence Wilcox, representing Avon and Somerset Police, told the hearing that Hunt had been linked to 25 incidents in total. He had previously been arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance over a series of other 'gimp' incidents in the Cleeve, Claverham and Yatton areas last year. Many of these also saw a man rolling around the floor and making threatening noises towards people he appeared in front of late at night. But police said insufficient evidence meant no further action was taken in relation to those offences. The court heard that during a search of Hunt's home in Claverham, officers found a journal in which he had written a story about someone called Jack who purchases a black rubber suit and mask with white paint on the mask. 'The face was looking like something out of a horror film - a face that would scare the life out of anyone,' Hunt wrote. In October 2023, a gimp sighting was recorded by trick-or-treaters in Gloucester, who spotted a figure clad head-to-toe in black as they celebrated Halloween. The unknown gimp man was described by locals as 'scrawny' and 'menacing' as it briefly antagonised the residents of Twigworth on October 31. The mystery figure was spotted late at night heading toward the Bloor Homes development on Tewkesbury Road before disappearing into the night. James Patterson, who spotted the gimp, said: 'I was just taking my son out 'Trick or Treating' when I saw a black, scrawny, somewhat menacing looking figure darting and dodging down the roads in the Bloor housing estate.' Meanwhile, in Colchester, Essex, a gimp went viral during the Covid-19 pandemic after he documented himself shopping in Tesco dressed in a full gimp suit. Dubbed the 'Gimp Man of Essex', evidence of his strange behaviour dates back to 2014. However, unlike other gimps, who seem to want to spread terror, the Essex Gimp has in the past suggested alternative motives. In July 2022, he suggested he wanted to raise £1,000 for the charity Mind in mid and north-east Essex. He said: 'I'm a normal guy who just likes wearing the suit. It's a bit of an escape for me.' In late October 2022, a teenager reported a 'freaky' encounter with a man dressed in a gimp suit in Cleeve, North Somerset, at around 12.25am. A man in his 30s was later arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance and was released on bail. Theatre-goers at London's iconic Shakespeare Globe were also left shocked after a man dressed in a gimp suit attended a showing of The Comedy of Errors in May 2023. One audience member told The Daily Telegraph how the outfit 'extremely inappropriate' and that it made others feel uncomfortable. The concerned woman said: 'Even if a child doesn't know what a latex suit is or the sexual connotations, it's still a very scary sight and puts parents in a very uncomfortable position when it comes to explaining to their children what is going on. 'I found the whole thing extremely inappropriate and I wasn't the only one – a lot of people were obviously uncomfortable with his presence.' In March last year, two alleged sightings of so-called 'gimp men' were recorded across both Sussex and Suffolk. A dog walker, who chose to not be identified, reported encountering someone wearing 'very see-through tights' and a 'balaclava', while in Suffolk, women and girls were left fearing for their safety after alleging being followed by a masked man in a picturesque market town in Suffolk.

Moment crazy swordfight breaks out outside kebab shop before police rush in to arrest seven

This is the terrifying moment a sword fight broke out in a city centre street, before police arrested six men. Officers were called to Commercial Road, Newport, after a group of men were seen fighting in the street yesterday afternoon. Video shard to X showed the thugs with huge sword-like blades who were seen with bloodied faces and arms during the violence. The group were seen clashing into each other with the weapons as one fell to the ground and others attempted to interject. Gwent Police said six men, aged 25, 28, 33, 40, 42 and 52, and one 17-year-old boy, who are all from Newport, were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. They remain in custody. Four of the men have attended hospital, and two were later discharged while two others remain in hospital receiving treatment. Around six police cars, all with lights flashing, were surrounding the area, along with at least two vans. More than a dozen officers rushed to the scene where they cordoned off the area and redirected residents to help continue their journeys. Video shard to X showed the thugs with huge sword-like blades who were seen with bloodied faces and arms during the violence Chief Superintendent John Davies said: 'We will not tolerate anyone who acts in such a violent way on our streets, or exposes members of our communities to such a horrific level of aggression when they go about their daily business. 'Violence in any form is completely unacceptable, and we have acted decisively in making these arrests. Anyone else who is found to be involved in this violent disorder will also be dealt with. 'This is now a live investigation and speculation, especially online and social media commentary, about the identities of those involved will not help us secure justice against those found to be responsible.' Detective Chief Inspector Neil Blyth, who is leading the investigation, said: 'We are still conducting inquiries to establish what has happened, so it is likely that you will see officers working in the area. 'While there is no cause for alarm, I would recommend taking the time to talk to them if you have any concerns or questions, but also if you have any details or information that could assist our inquires.' Police said Commercial Road has reopened but are appealing for any witnesses who were in the area between 3pm and 4pm on Friday to get in touch.
