Greece seeks cooperation with Libya to stop migration, PM says
June 26 (Reuters) - Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday that Libya should cooperate with Greece and Europe to help halt a surge in migration flows from the north African state.
Seaborne arrivals of migrants in Europe from the north of Africa, including war-torn Sudan, and the Middle East in recent months.
Greece said on Monday it would deploy two frigates and one more vessel off Libya's territorial waters to deter migrants from reaching its southern islands of Crete and Gavdos.
"I will inform my colleagues about the significant increase in the number of people from eastern Libya and ask for the support of the European Commission so that the issue can be addressed immediately," Mitsotakis said ahead of an European Union summit in Brussels that began on Thursday.
Mitsotakis said authorities in Libya should cooperate with Greece to stop migrants sailing from there or turn them back before they exit Libyan territorial waters.
He added that the EU's migration commissioner and ministers from Italy, Greece and Malta would travel to Libya early in July to discuss the issue.
Law and order has been weak in Libya since a 2011 uprising that toppled dictator Muammar Gaddafi, with the country divided by factional conflict into eastern and western sections for over a decade.

Another week, another utter disgrace for the BBC when it comes to antisemitism and the safety of Britain's Jewish community. This time the setting was Glastonbury. The BBC has been broadcasting live from the festival for many years. It employs hundreds of people to cover the event at significant expense to licence-fee payers. It is meant to have systems in place to ensure that racist, offensive content is not broadcast. So how was it possible on Saturday afternoon that the rap duo Bob Vylan were allowed to broadcast live on the BBC chanting 'death to the IDF' and talking about 'f-ing Zionists'? Why was the live feed not immediately cut? Why did BBC executives allow the racist rant to continue unchecked? The BBC's own editorial guidelines state the following: 'Material that contains hate speech should not be included in output unless it is justified by the context. Broadcasting hate speech can constitute a criminal offence if it is intended or likely to stir up hatred relating to race, or intended to stir up hatred relating to religious belief'. So has the BBC committed a criminal offence in broadcasting this hateful, racist material? The police should investigate, as should the BBC's Board, led by Chairman Samir Shah. How much longer can they tolerate the failings of BBC leadership on antisemitism and bias? Director General Tim Davie and his executives have had more than eighteen months to get a grip and yet this weekend's debacle shows the BBC's problems are getting ever worse not better. It is also time for the government and Ofcom to act. The BBC has repeatedly shown itself unable to get its own house in order on antisemitism, whether that be the racism broadcast live this weekend from Glastonbury, the consistent Jew-hate and bias from reporters on BBC Arabic or the debacle of the Gaza documentary that the corporation was forced to pull because, amongst other things, a payment had been made to the family of a Hamas official. The BBC's editorial failings on antisemitism and anti-Israel bias are now so numerous, so widespread and so consistent that perhaps I should not be surprised. But to see our national broadcaster allow this racist rant to be aired was stomach-churning. Many Jews I have spoken to feel the same: a mixture of shock, disgust, sadness and fear. There is disbelief that the BBC gave a platform to those inciting violence against Jews and gleefully telling racist stories. The BBC has hit a new low. It is, frankly, unforgivable.

Over a third of people on sinking Tuvalu seek Australia's climate visas
SYDNEY, June 29 (Reuters) - More than one-third of the people in the tiny Pacific nation of Tuvalu, which scientists predict will be submerged by rising seas, have applied for a landmark climate visa to migrate to Australia, according to official figures. Tuvalu's ambassador to the United Nations, Tapugao Falefou, told Reuters on Sunday he was "startled by the huge number of people vying for this opportunity", and the small community was interested to learn who the first lot of climate migrants would be. Tuvalu, one of the countries at greatest risk from climate change, which experts say is boosting sea levels, has a population of 11,000 on its nine atolls scattered across the Pacific between Australia and Hawaii. Since applications for Australia's visa lottery opened this month, 1,124 people have registered, with family members bringing the total seeking the visa to 4,052 under the bilateral climate and security treaty. Applications close on July 18, with an annual cap of 280 visas designed to ensure migration to Australia does not cause brain drain from Tuvalu, officials said when the treaty was announced in 2023. The visa will allow Tuvalu residents to live, work and study in Australia, accessing health benefits and education on the same basis as Australian citizens. "Moving to Australia under the Falepili Union treaty will in some way provide additional remittance to families staying back," Falefou said. By 2050, NASA scientists project daily tides will submerge half the main atoll of Funafuti, home to 60% of Tuvalu's residents, where villagers cling to a strip of land as narrow as 20 metres (65 feet). That forecast assumes a 1-metre rise in sea levels, while the worst case, double that, would put 90% of Funafuti under water. Tuvalu, whose mean elevation is just 2 metres (6 feet 7 inches), has experienced a sea-level rise of 15 cm (6 inches) over the past three decades, one and a half times the global average. It has built 7 hectares (17 acres) of artificial land, and is planning more, which it hopes will stay above the tides until 2100.
