ITV Karen Pirie fans only just realising where they've seen River Wilde actress before

Daily Mirror4 days ago
ITV's Karen Pirie has been a huge hit with viewers, but many are only just realising where they've seen one of the main characters before
Fans of the gripping ITV drama Karen Pirie are quickly realising where they've previously seen the actress who plays River Wilde.

The brand new series of the hit show kicked off at the weekend, three years after it debuted on screens. Based on the Inspector Karen Pirie series of novels by Val McDermid, the programme follows officer Karen Pirie played by Lauren Lyle.

In the new series, Karen has found herself promoted to detective inspector - and it doesn't take her long to get involved in some drama

Soon enough, Karen is assigned to crack another cold case to do with an infamous unsolved case from over 30 years ago, that saw the kidnapping of heiress Catriona Grant (Julia Brown) and her young son.

However, a man's body has now been found with indisputable links to the original kidnapping. As a result, Karen makes it her mission to find out the truth - with her and her team taking on the biggest challenge of their careers to date.
Several cast members from series one have returned for the new show, including actress Emer Kenny, who plays River Wilde, Karen's best pal and a professor of forensic anthropology and archaeology.

As well as Karen Pirie, which she has also written, Emer has appeared in the likes of Pramface and Father Brown. However, it's her role in EastEnders back in 2010 that has got plenty of fans talking.
'Emer Kenny who played Zsa Zsa Carter is in the new ITV show Karen Pirie,' said one person on an EastEnders Facebook fan page. Other people shared their shock: 'I thought it was her!' Another agreed: 'Same here I recognised her from somewhere.'

Emer made her debut on EastEnders in 2010 as Zsa Zsa Carter, the daughter of Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White). She departed the show that same year after dumping her cheating boyfriend Leon and leaving for France.
Meanwhile talking about the new series of Karen Pirie, Emer recently admitted she felt pressure coming up with the second series.
'I was daunted because it was my first time lead writing a show and it was Lauren's first time as the lead, so there was this kind of mad, magic excitement that we had and we both really gave it everything we had, and I put a lot of my personal feelings about how it felt to be doing that for the first time in the story,' she told Yahoo UK recently.

Mack's heartbreak in Emmerdale as he hides his feelings

Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) recently gave his wife Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) an ultimatum in Emmerdale. If she didn't give up her plan to be a surrogate for granddaughter Sarah (Katie Hill)'s baby, their marriage was over. And in coming episodes, as the plan moves ahead, their relationship is in the balance. When Sarah had to have life-saving surgery that included having a hysterectomy, she knew that her dream of being a mother had been shattered. Unable to cope with his granddaughter's sadness at a time when he was also grieving the death of his son Nate (Jurell Carter), it was Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) who first floated the idea of surrogacy as a way to help Sarah become a mum. It was soon clear that, because of Sarah's life-limiting condition of Fanconi anaemia, surrogacy agencies wouldn't consider helping her. Cain's one attempt at contacting a surrogate informally didn't work out either. So Charity came up with the idea of being the surrogate herself. 'Once she's set a decision in place she doesn't really back out of stuff,' Emma Atkins told us. 'She commits. She goes full pelt without thinking of any of the consequences.' So Charity went ahead and had the tests to see if she was suitable, reasoning that she could talk to her husband Mackenzie about it if she proved to be a suitable candidate. Unfortunately he got wind of the scheme before that could happen, courtesy of Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) who was concerned that his grandson Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) was making a mistake by getting involved as the sperm donor part of the scheme. Understandably, Mack was fuming. It wasn't that long ago that he and Charity lost a baby they were expecting when she had an ectopic pregnancy. In the wake of this he expressed a hope that they would try again, but Charity shut that down. Now Mack has been left trying – and failing – to understand why Charity would go through a pregnancy for Sarah, but not to have their child. Emma Atkins told us that Charity has some reservations, but prioritises Sarah: 'I think Charity just decides the best thing to do is back Sarah all the way. So you sort of see a lot of light and shade. One minute she's very for it, and the next minute, she's struggling with the obvious, with her health complications and her own as well being the age that she is so there's all of that.' More Trending For Mack, Charity's approach is incomprehensible. As she and Sarah get ready to go to the hospital for the procedure, he makes excuses and says he needs to work at Butlers. On his way there he bumps into Aaron (Danny Miller), who questions why he isn't at the hospital supporting Charity. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? He urges Mack to go and talk to his wife about his feelings, so Mack rushes to the fertility clinic, where Charity tells him the procedure went well. The family are in celebratory mood, but Mack has missed his chance to discuss his feelings. Later, Aaron again urges Mack to talk about how he's feeling to Charity, and when Charity is overwhelmed by too much TLC from Sarah and Jacob and sends them out, Mack grabs his chance to talk to her on her own. ITV will SACK 1 in 10 cast members from Corrie and Emmerdale in savage cost-cutting bloodbath

ITV chiefs are plotting a bloodbath on their two flagship soaps by axing one in ten cast members in the latest round of savage cost-cutting. Proposed plans also include slashing the number of scenes per episode for Coronation Street and Emmerdale — after the broadcaster announced it is cutting a further £15million from its total budget. 2 ITV's profits have slumped by 44 per cent to £99million for the first six months of this year. Now insiders have revealed executives are putting pressure on their top soaps to slash their spiralling budgets, cutting the soaps' cast lists by ten per cent. Coronation Street has 84 permanent cast members and Emmerdale has 70. Staffing on both soaps has risen rapidly in recent years, with many actors guaranteed a minimum number of episodes and episode fees per year. It is also suggested scenes per episode could be cut. Both soaps have about 20 scenes per show. And the number of cast used each episode could also be trimmed. A soap source said: 'It's brutal. We've known it was on the cards for a while, but they're really cranking it up now and it's across the soaps. They're looking to save millions and Corrie and Emmerdale are the obvious places. They're very expensive shows. 'Many who have been there for a long time are reliant on their income staying as it is. 'The amount of cast has spiralled out of control and focusing on dialogue, not action, could also save money.' Coronation Street and Emmerdale announce huge 'crossover' special episode in UK soap first Some older cast members have full-time contracts with a salary, but the majority are paid by the episode. It comes amid cuts across the ITV daytime schedule, with hundreds of staff axed from Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women. ITV said of the proposals: 'This is complete speculation.' 2

Martine McCutcheon's estranged mother emotionally reaches out to beg for a reconciliation after pushing star away following tragic death of her son

Martine McCutcheon 's estranged mother Jenny Tomlin has emotionally reached out to the star to beg for a reconciliation after having cut her off following the tragic death of her son. The former EastEnders star, 49, and her author mother, 69, were once close, however, in a heartbreaking new interview, Jenny admitted she pushed her daughter away after suffering an emotional breakdown following the loss of Martine's brother Laurence John (affectionally known as LJ) in 2022. Confessing the pain of the distance between her and Martine, Jenny admitted that she 'misses' her daughter so much that it 'physically hurts' and is now reaching out to say 'sorry' after losing contact. Speaking to OK! magazine, Jenny said: 'When I lost LJ, I detached. I was so heartbroken I couldn't talk to Martine. There was no big row – Martine tried to contact me for months, but I didn't answer. Martine was grieving and needed me, too. I want the chance to say sorry. I miss her so much – it physically hurts.' She went on to add: 'I didn't contact Martine. I abandoned her. I was so wrapped up in my own grief that I was neglecting my other child. That was the start of it, and things just… snowballed. And here we are.' Jenny told how the pair were briefly in touch last October when Martine 'texted me out of the blue' to ask a favour of her husband Alan, however, Jenny admitted the meeting was 'awkward' with a 'heavy atmosphere'. While there were vague plans to unite at Christmas, nothing came of it and their relationship has fallen silence ever since, with Jenny's attempts at getting in contact proving fruitless. Jenny noted that she could relate to David and Victoria Beckham's heartbreak over their estrangement from eldest son Brooklyn, adding it's 'heartbreaking' to be estranged from or lose a child. The Behind Closed Doors writer went on to recall LJ's sudden death in 2002 from acute ischaemic heart disease and diabetes which left her devastated, with Martine going on to comfort her mother following the tragedy. However, Jenny recalled going 'down a deep, dark pit' that led her to being assessed by a 'mental health team', with Jenny going on to push her daughter away amid her immense grief. She also told how along with losing Martine, she's essentially lost her 10-year-old grandson Rafferty, confessing that this separation 'felt like another death'. She has tried to make amends as recently as a few weeks ago, driving down to the Love Actually star's Surrey home where she 'banged on the door' and 'shouted her name', but nobody answered. Jenny suggested that she had no choice but to do the interview to beg for Martine to get back in touch, adding that there's not a day that she doesn't think of her daughter. She added: 'I don't think I'll ever stop trying when it comes to my girl. If I could speak to Martine, I'd tell her how sorry I am. I've lost one child, I don't want to lose another.' Jenny concluded that she's seen what silence does to families and doesn't want to be 'another story of regret', and hopes that she and Martine can 'find our way back'. Jenny's message for Martine comes amid a difficult time for her daughter, who was recently declared bankrupt – just months after the break up of her marriage, MailOnline revealed. The actress filed a petition for her insolvency over a debt to a finance company, official public records reveal. Martine's financial woes follow soon after the very public split from husband Jack McManus, with whom she shares a ten-year-old son. The couple, who had married in a lavish event at Lake Como in Italy in 2012, announced their split late last year. And her bankruptcy was issued just two months after Martine and musician Jack, 42, sold the family home they had shared, a five bedroom detached home in Surrey for £1,355,000, as they went their separate ways. The bankruptcy order was made in her married name – Martine McManus - despite her being formally single by the then. It was issued in March at the County Court in Guildford, Surrey following a petition filed by a company called LDF Finance to whom she owed an unspecified sum of money. But that wasn't the only financial blow to strike her soon after the marriage split: her company Raven Music Ltd was also wound up just last month at the request of HMRC due to unpaid tax bills, MailOnline has learned. The most recent accounts for the company reveal that it owed more than £175,000 to the taxman, payable in the 12month period after February 2022. Martine's total personal tax bill has not been revealed, and it is not known if the Official Receiver will apply for a public examination of her bankruptcy which would disclose her financial affairs to the world.
