Oman: Khareef Dhofar begins with natural beauty, rich array of events
SALALAH: The khareef season in Dhofar began on Saturday, the most anticipated annual event that covers its coastal regions from Dhalkout in the west to Mirbat in the east. Triggered by monsoon winds and clouds arriving from the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean, the season will continue until September 20.
The season includes cultural, recreational and tourism activities for all age groups, with a strong emphasis on Omani identity and heritage to create an authentic atmosphere.
HH Sayyid Marwan bin Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar, said that the governorate welcomed khareef every year on June 21 with divine beauty and unique weather conditions. "We all unite to prepare the conditions, events and facilities necessary to make Khareef Dhofar 2025 exceptional and successful across 90 days of joy and natural splendour," he stated.
As part of a new promotional approach, the Office of the Governor of Dhofar has launched the campaign 'Esh Jabak?' an Arabic phrase meaning 'What brought you here?' This campaign emerges from a deeper understanding of visitors' needs, market trends and the global move towards meaningful, personal experiences. It celebrates the diverse reasons that make Dhofar a multi-faceted destination — each visit sparked by a different story. The campaign highlights Dhofar's timeless natural beauty, adventure opportunities in caves and mountains, the warmth and generosity of its people. It offers a vibrant calendar of events and the luxury offered by local resorts and hotels.

Oman: CAA records $272mln in 2024 revenue, highlights global safety rankings
Muscat – The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announced on Wednesday that it recorded revenues amounting to RO105 million in 2024, underscoring its operational efficiency and financial sustainability. The announcement was made during the Authority's annual media briefing held in Muscat under the patronage of H.E. Dr Abdullah Nasser al Harrasi, Minister of Information. The event was attended by senior officials, strategic partners, and key stakeholders. Reviewing its performance over the past year, the CAA reported a 95.95 per cent compliance rate with aviation safety standards, placing Oman fifth globally in the effective implementation of aviation safety oversight. Major achievements included the activation of the southern runway at Muscat International Airport, the approval of the General Civil Aviation Policy, and the signing of nine international air transport agreements. The Authority also issued new regulations to enhance passenger rights protection and introduced a revised licensing framework for drone registration and air traffic management. As part of its digital transformation efforts, the CAA revamped 113 electronic services, implemented a document management system, obtained information security certification, and upgraded Oman's numerical weather prediction systems and wadi flood forecasting models. In terms of operational expansion, the CAA granted permits to 19 foreign airlines. Cybersecurity and aviation security policies were ratified, while operational manuals were activated for both Duqm and Marmul airports. Additionally, a new air navigation radar was installed in Jalan Bani Bu Ali to strengthen national airspace surveillance. Aviation performance indicators reflected growth, with a 2 per cent increase in passenger traffic compared to 2023, and over 120,000 flights recorded. Air cargo volumes surpassed 150,000 tonnes, while more than 540,300 aircraft transited Omani airspace – a 14 per cent rise year-on-year. The national meteorological monitoring network grew to include 80 stations across the country. Meanwhile, 520 consumer complaints were addressed and resolved efficiently. Internationally, Oman attained a 94.4 per cent compliance score in aviation security under the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) Continuous Monitoring Approach. The sultanate ranked fourth among G20 nations and third in the Middle East. Oman also achieved full compliance with aviation facilitation standards under Annex 9 of the Chicago Convention. Looking to the future, the Authority confirmed that detailed design work is nearing completion for Musandam Airport, with accelerated progress anticipated in early 2025. The tender for construction of the passenger terminal at Sohar Airport is expected to be issued before the end of the year. Meanwhile, a new aircraft hangar at Muscat International Airport is set to be inaugurated later this year, positioning Oman as a regional centre for aircraft maintenance. The event also marked the launch of an upgraded digital platform for Oman Meteorology, offering real-time weather updates. A commemorative postage stamp was unveiled to celebrate 50 years of Oman's membership in the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). H.E. Eng. Naif Ali al Abri, Chairman of the CAA, stated that the year's achievements reflect Oman's unwavering commitment to aviation safety and its alignment with international best practices. 'These results are a testament to our clear strategic vision and the strong collaboration between all partners. Oman: Major road upgrades underway in Dhofar for khareef 2025
Salalah – In preparation for khareef 2025, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology is accelerating implementation of strategic road development projects across Dhofar to support tourism, economic growth and public mobility. The ministry confirmed that major upgrades and maintenance works are in progress throughout the governorate, aimed at enhancing road connectivity and traffic flow. Among the flagship projects is the Attin Tunnel in Salalah, which has reached 93% completion – well ahead of schedule. The tunnel is expected to significantly ease congestion during peak tourist months. Work is also advancing on dualisation of key roads in Salalah. Sultan Taimur Street (6.8km) is 40% complete, while 45% of work on Al Farouq Street (7.6km) has been finalised. In Mughsail, 20% of work has been completed on a new road project that includes a 12m-high bridge, pedestrian paths, lighting and an underpass connecting tourist sites. The 33km Raysut-Mughsail Road is also being dualised, with six interchanges and a 5.5km extension to 18th November Road. The Al Shuwaimiya Ascent Improvement Project in Shalim and Hallaniyat Islands has been awarded. The 2.5km stretch includes new drainage systems, safety barriers and road signage. According to Said bin Mohammed Tabuk, Director General of Road and Land Transport in Dhofar, the third, fourth and fifth phases of Sultan Said bin Taimur Road dualisation – spanning 400km – has commenced. MUSCAT: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) recorded the highest revenue in its history, contributing RO 105 million and placing it among the top five government entities in terms of contributions. This was revealed by Eng Nayef bin Ali al Abri, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), during a press conference, which was held on Wednesday to highlight CAA's and aviation sector's progress report of 2024, under the auspices of Dr Abdullah bin Nasser al Harrasi, Minister of Information. CAA also launched an updated meteorology website and mobile app with a colour-coded alert system during the annual media meeting. Oman was ranked 5th globally in the Effective Implementation Index of Air Safety Oversight, with a compliance rate of 95.95 per cent, reinforcing global confidence in Oman's aviation system. Other achievements included the activation of the southern runway at Muscat International Airport, approval of the national civil aviation policy and the signing of nine air transport agreements. The Authority also issued a regulation to protect passenger rights and introduced licences for UAV (drone) air traffic management and registration. The approval of emergency and evacuation plans, commissioning of a new navigation radar in Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, operational readiness of Duqm and Marmul airports and operational permits granted to 19 foreign airlines were the also highlights of last year. As part of its digital transformation efforts, the CAA rolled out 113 e-services, activated an Electronic Document and Records Management System (EDRMS) and achieved ISO 27001 certification for information security. It also launched projects such as the upgrade of Oman's Numerical Weather Prediction systems and a new Wadi Flood Index. Operational statistics showed significant growth as the passenger numbers increased by 2 per cent compared to 2023. Air cargo volumes reached 150,118 tonnes. 540,300 aircraft crossed Omani airspace, marking a 14-per cent increase, The Authority issued 17,182 flight permits and 2,112 obstacle clearance permits and It activated 80 weather monitoring stations, including two new installations.
