NBA fans divided as legendary female coach is considered by the New York Knicks

Daily Mail5 days ago
As the New York Knicks ' coaching search continues to drag on in an uncertain direction, the team has considered one unorthodox option which has fans split.
After reaching the team's first Eastern Conference Finals in 25 years, the Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau.
The team considered multiple coaches for the position, but still have not inked a deal with anyone - leading to some out-of-the-box considerations.
This includes one of the top coaches in all of college basketball, but not one that has led a men's team.
According to the New York Post, the Knicks have reached out to University of South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley.
Staley's a very successful coach - having won three NCAA titles, nine conference tournament titles, and being named Coach of the Year four times.
It's unclear if the discussion that the Knicks had with Staley was a formal interview or more to gague interest.
This isn't the first time Staley's been considered for the position: she met with the Portland Trail Blazers regarding their vacancy back in 2021.
South Carolina's athletic director, Jeremiah Donati, confirmed the Knicks spoke to Staley - telling On3, 'If I were them, I would have called her too.'
Staley is a member of the Basketball Hall-of-Fame for her accomplishments as a player. She won three Olympic Gold Medals with Team USA from 1996-2004 and was a six-time WNBA All Star.
Still, there were split reactions to the news. On one hand, some fans believed that bringing in a highly successful basketball coaching legend would be good for the Knicks.
'Imagine seeing everything Dawn Staley has done and being mad she's in consideration for your head coaching position. She's had more success this decade than the Knicks have had as a franchise,' read one comment on X.
One Knicks fan account said, 'There's no non-sexist reason to be upset the Knicks reached out to Dawn Staley The Knicks need a coach and she's a good coach. Would it be surprising? Yes. Do I expect them to hire her? No. Should they speak with as wide a net possible of good coaches? Yes.'
On the other, there were plenty of comments - many of which leaned into sexism - suggesting she shouldn't be considered.
One comment said, 'Knicks are a playoff team trying to win now....Dawn has never coached the Men's game....which is entirely different than the Women's game. Not saying she couldn't eventually be a Men's coach....but she needs to start at the college level and work her way up. Come on now.
'Is this some sort of joke? Hopefully this 'approach' is because of her work at SC Gamecocks rather than ticking some DEI boxes. Given it's woke NY, this could be for any reason. Whether she can step up so many levels from the @WNBA to the real deal @NBA is hard to tell,' read another comment.
The Knicks have formally interviewed four candidates for the vacancy: Mike Brown, Taylor Jenkins, Micah Nori, and James Borrego.
Brown is reportedly being brought back for a second interview.

'Rarely been so angry': Bayern boss Kompany seethes over Musiala injury

ATLANTA, July 6 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany said he was furious after Jamal Musiala sustained a horrific injury during the first half of their Club World Cup quarter-final defeat by Paris St Germain in Atlanta on Saturday. The 22-year-old Germany international was injured in added time before the break following a collision in PSG's penalty area. As Musiala challenged defender William Pacho for the ball, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma inadvertently rolled over Musiala's left ankle, twisting it at an alarming angle and leaving him lying in agony on the pitch. "I've rarely been so angry at halftime, not against my players. There's many things in life that are important, much more important than this. But in the end, for these guys it's their life," Kompany told reporters after the 2-0 loss. "And someone like Jamal lives for this and he came back from a setback. And then it happens in the way it happens and you feel powerless... "When I'm sat here next to you now, the thing that gets my blood still boiling at the moment, it's not the result. I understand this is football. But it's the fact that it happened to someone who, one, enjoys the game so much but also very important for us." Bayern's medical team rushed on to the pitch as Donnarumma, visibly shaken, dropped to the ground with his hands on his head in disbelief at the severity of the injury. Players from both teams formed a circle around Musiala who was carried off the field on a stretcher. The German daily Bild reported he could be sidelined for up to five months. Bayern goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer said Donnarumma's dive was "risky" and that he had spoken to his Italian counterpart after the incident. "You just accept that your opponent might get injured. It could even be a teammate," he added. "So I went over to him and said: 'Don't you want – because it was half-time anyway – don't you want to go over there? Jamal is lying there, he'll probably stay in the hospital, he has a serious injury, and I think it's only right to go over there out of respect and wish him well and just say a little sorry.' "After that, he went over to Jamal... Fairness is always important, and I would have reacted differently." After the match, Donnarumma posted on Instagram: "All my prayers and well wishes are with you Jamal."

Travis Kelce reveals how Travis Hunter could get exposed in the NFL amid Jaguar rookie's two-way plans

Travis Kelce believes NFL teams will ruthlessly target Travis Hunter in a bid to 'get him tired' if he plays both offense and defense for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hunter is gearing up for his rookie season in Jacksonville after being drafted No. 2 overall by the Jaguars back in April. The Heisman Trophy winner, who got married to Leanna Lenee this offseason, got his hands on that coveted award due to his breathtaking versatility as both a wide receiver and a cornerback in the college ranks. Jaguars head coach Liam Coen has suggested Hunter will be a two-way player for his team in the coming season, revealing last month that he was practicing on both sides of the ball. Yet according to Kelce, lining the 22-year-old up on defense could backfire when teams 'run deep balls at him all day' to wear him out. During an appearance on the Bussin With The Boys podcast, the Kansas City Chiefs legend was first asked if he thinks Hunter will be successful in the NFL, to which he replied: 'Hell yes, 100 percent. World-class athlete.' Travis Kelce says NFL teams will ruthlessly target Travis Hunter if he plays defense for the Jags However, when asked about the prospect of him playing both sides, Kelce continued: 'Both sides? See that's the thing... I don't know how they're gonna divvy it out, cause teams are gonna be going after him. They're gonna try and make his day miserable. 'If he plays corner they're gonna run deep balls at him all day, they're gonna run the wide receivers to take off on him all day, just to try and get him tired. Why wouldn't you just attack him that way?' Kelce has previously offered up words of warning for Hunter amid his ambitions to play both sides in the NFL. On an episode of his New Heights podcast in March, the Chiefs tight end said: 'I just think that mentality [playing both sides] - it can wear a guy out. I'm not saying that he can't do it because I was blown away by what he could do in college in terms of playing every single down. 'If he is going to do that, I think it's smarter to scheme it up to where you know you're not putting him in a vulnerable position to get tired out faster.' Travis' older brother Jason then read a quote from Hunter's coach at Colorado - Deion Sanders - which said the plan was for the rookie to play both positions or else NFL teams should not draft him. Travis then threw his support behind Hunter when he replied: 'I think he's proven that he needs to play on both sides of the ball.' He continued: 'I think it's easier for him to be on the field all the time as a defensive player and then offensively coming in on certain plays. I think that is so much easier... I think he could be more influential. 'What's the point in certain run downs when you know it's run to have him on the field going in there, scooping out a safety. Could he do it? Yeah. Could I get another guy to do it? Probably. 'He's a f****n' all-around athlete, dude. You can put him anywhere on the football field. You can give him the reverses, you can do anything with him on the football field... 'When you watch him run, you're like "yeah, we should probably throw him the ball."'

Dodgers broadcaster Orel Hershiser makes savage remark about Astros cheating scandal during blowout loss

Los Angeles Dodgers pitching great and current broadcaster Orel Hershiser made a savage remark about the Houston Astros cheating scandal during a game between the teams on Friday. It was a blowout loss for the Dodgers, with things rarely looking good for the home team before the 18-1 lopsided final result. It was in the middle of a 4-run third inning for the Astros when Hershiser brought up the scandal, after Cam Smith doubled off Los Angeles rookie pitcher Ben Casparius. The Astros were caught stealing signs from rival teams during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, which led to several firings, a $5million fine, and Major League Baseball stripping the franchise of two first-round, and a pair of second-round, draft picks. Some players and coaches' legacies will be forever tied to the sign-stealing scandal, including AJ Hinch, Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Alex Cora, Carlos Beltran, and more. 'I don't want to open an old wound, but in some ways, they're swinging at these breaking balls like they know what is coming,' Hershiser said on SportsNet LA. Hershiser appears not to have gotten in any trouble for the remark, as it would have played positively with a Dodgers-favored broadcast. The boos continued to come down on Altuve at Dodger Stadium this weekend, as the fans clearly have not forgotten about the scandal. Other fan bases have not forgotten about the Astros misdeeds either, namely the New York Yankees, who Houston defeated in the ALCS before besting the Dodgers in the World Series. Correa has not played for the Astros since 2021, but is still mercilessly booed by Yankees fans in the Bronx whenever his new team, the Minnesota Twins, come to New York City. The Astros also won the American League in 2019, 2021, and 2022, with MLB finding no wrongdoing from the team during those seasons. Yet, the Astros having success will likely come with an asterisk for some fans and broadcasters forever.
