Mindy Kaling reveals why she took a step back from acting

New York Post07-06-2025
Mindy Kaling stepped away from acting for a bit, but now, she's ready to run point on screen.
The 45-year-old starred as Kelly Kapoor in the NBC sitcom 'The Office' for eight seasons from 2005 to 2013. From there, Kaling garnered a slew of iconic roles including her own show 'The Mindy Project' which aired a six season run from 2012 to 2017.
After starting her own production company called Kaling International in 2012, she spearheaded the comedy 'Never Have I Ever' which was a Netflix hit for four seasons before ending in 2023.

Now, the 'Inside Out' vet is explaining why she stepped back from the screen.
'A show literally about an Indian American family in Southern California, and if I wasn't on that—what's wrong with me?' Kaling told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday. 'I think there is a part of me that feels a little superstitious. I'm like, 'these seem to have gone well and I'm not in them so maybe I'll wait.' '

'I miss it,' admitted Kaling. 'I would like to write or co-create a show for me to act in soon.'
Although the 'Late Night' alum didn't elaborate on what kind of project she sees herself in, she did note she'd love to act and direct it.

As Kaling put it, doing both is 'unbelievably fun and it's so efficient.' The last time she did so was on 'The Mindy Project.'

'I would love to do that again,' she went on. 'That's the thing that maybe in the next couple of years, when I launch a couple of other things that are earlier in the pipeline, that would be something that would be fun to do again.'
Kaling's latest co-creation was the Netflix sports comedy 'Running Point' – which debuted in February and starred Kate Hudson, Brenda Song, Chet Hanks, Max Greenfield, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur and Justin Theroux.

Kaling also spoke to the outlet about keeping her production company smaller.
'Here's my thing. I have worked on many different platforms and it's not just about the money, but more often than not, the money represents real enthusiasm,' she shared. 'Sometimes it doesn't; sometimes I've done stuff for less money because the people seem so excited, like on the Zoom after the pitch.'
'The problem is that people are switching their jobs quickly that for me, I don't think there's been an instance where the person I sold a show, to that team has stayed intact for two years. Executives are moving constantly up and so to me, I never get too married to a creative team.'

When it came to working with Kaling on 'Running Point,' the show's star had nothing but praise for the mom-of-two.
In May, Hudson, 46 said during a panel at an Emmy FYC event, per People: 'I have to say, I've fallen in love with this woman. And she's just not only so brilliant, but so trusting … she puts the best team together.'

'And she was pregnant,' the singer expressed. 'We had a script, like our first table read. She's on Zoom. She then has the baby and is sending notes, like an hour after she has the baby. I was like, 'Isn't Mindy literally in labor?' She is a powerhouse and delivers what she says she's going to deliver.'

With season two around the corner, Kaling teased what fans are in store for while talking to E! News on Thursday.
'Season two is so good,' she gushed. 'We hit the ground running. There is so much – can I say this? There's jut so much romance and sex and fun screaming arguments about basketball which is all anybody wants to see.

'Jurassic World Rebirth,' 'The Old Guard 2' — Movie new releases to see or skip this weekend in Canada — streaming and in theatres

It's you're an action movie lover, there's a lot for you to see this weekend with the release of Prime Video's Heads of State with John Cena, Idris Elba and Priyanka Chopra, and the theatrical release of Jurassic World Rebirth with Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali and Rupert Friend. Additionally, The Old Guard 2 was released on Netflix this week, with Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman. But while there's so much newness in the action genre, much of it didn't land as well as you may have hoped. That being said, on the other side of the genre spectrum, Eva Victor's feature debut Sorry, Baby is a clear hit of the Baby is certainly my pick of the week if you're going to see a newly released movie. Eva Victor's film is an impressive debut feature that's incredibly thoughtful, endearing and funny, and Victor's voice feels unique. While it may be tempting to call this a film about trauma, it's really about healing after violence, something that's often left out in films with similar subject matter. Victor also injects so much humour into the story in a way that only works when the filmmaker has impressive attention to detail with fully developed and nuanced characters. This is already one of my favourite movies of the year so far. The biggest issue with Jurassic World Rebirth is that it's exactly what you expect, but that means it lacks excitement. Ultimately, it's just boring. But much of it comes down to a continuation of a franchise that's quite tired, and needs a big swing to really reinvigorate these stories. That's not what you're getting with Jurassic World Rebirth. It's a movie that just falls into the "meh" descriptor. If you're a particular fan of the franchise or the actors, you can have a good time with this one, but otherwise it's two hours and 13 minutes of predictability. The cast does the best they can with the story, but you can't escape the fact that the magic of this franchise has diminished over the years. There are two things that make Heads of State watchable. Firstly, the chemistry between John Cena and Idris Elba, who were also castmates on The Suicide Squad, and one sequence with Jack Quaid that is incredibly entertaining in its goofiness. Other than those elements, the film is holding on by a thin string with dialogue that will make you roll your eyes, and CGI that looks odd at times. But it's your typical mainstream action-comedy, so you know what to expect. The movie may star Elba, but don't expect this to be The Wire. Let's get the obvious out of the way, the story in The Old Guard 2 is far less enticing than what we got in the first film. And when that's your starting point, it's a tough uphill battle to try to crawl out from a stunted script. The story lacks the fun from the first movie, with no real stakes. Of course, Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman in an action movie together is going to make you want to hit play, they're both absolute powerhouses in the genre. But that being said, you'll be left wishing they had more substance to work with. Victoria Mahoney certainly tries to use the film's action sequences as effective storytelling devices in the evolution of this narrative, leaning into as much fun and poignancy as she can, but the expansion of this story just isn't on any solid ground.

The announcement was made by the show's stars, Nikki Rodriguez, Noah LaLonde, and Ashby Gentry, at the Calgary Stampede, an annual rodeo, exhibition, and festival held every July in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The scoop: Looking to capitalize on the success of the sudsy Virgin River with an eye on the younger demographics, My Life with the Walter Boys, based on Ali Novak's 2014 novel of the same name, follows recently orphaned Jackie Howard (Nikki Rodriguez), a teenage girl from Manhattan who relocates to rural Colorado after she is taken in by the Walters, a family of eight children - seven sons and one daughter. The series was developed by Melanie Halsall. There Jackie finds herself attracted to two of the Walter boys. The first is Noah Lalonde as the hunky 'rebel without a cause' Cole Walter, the fraternal twin of Danny (Connor Stanhope) who used to be quarterback at Silver Falls High School but suffered from a career-ending injury. Then there is Ashby Gentry as Alex Walter, the more bookish type who also pines for Jackie. SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 18: 2024 PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS — Pictured: (l-r) Nikki ... ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' Season 2 Announced at Anime Expo 2025 With New Director, New Storyline, and a Whole Lot More Blood

Night City is calling once again. During Anime Expo 2025, Netflix and CD Projekt Red officially announced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 — a brand-new installment of the acclaimed anime series set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. Revealed during the 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — Behind the Scenes With its Creators' panel, the new season will feature 'an entirely new story, fresh characters, and a raw, realistic take on the most dangerous city of the dark future.' Bartosz Sztybor, story writer and producer of the original series, confirmed the news alongside voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) and Zach Aguilar (David Martinez), host Joey 'The Anime Man' Bizinger, and Edgerunners director Hiroyuki Imaishi. During the panel, fans were treated to exclusive reveals of the official Season 2 logo and poster artwork, according to The Verge. 'David's story might be over, but there's plenty more to discover in Night City,' Sztybor said. 'And to again have the legendary animation studio TRIGGER along for the ride makes us at CD PROJEKT RED so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we've done before.' Taking the reins this season is Kai Ikarashi, who directed Season 1's standout episode 'Girl on Fire.' Ikarashi was formally introduced as the new director in a video message shown during the panel, where he also debuted a 'Director's Voice' video, offering a glimpse into his creative vision for the next chapter. The new 10-episode standalone story is being described as 'sadder,' 'darker,' and 'more bloody,' according to Sztybor, who didn't hold back during the Trigger Studio panel: 'I just wanted to make the whole world sad… when people are sad, I'm a bit happy.' He added, 'It will be also darker, more bloody, and more raw.' A synopsis teases what's to come: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077 — a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter? Ikarashi will be joined by returning Edgerunners collaborators Kanno Ichigo (Promare, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) as lead character designer and Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare), who will handle the screenplay adaptation. While there's no premiere date just yet, fans lucky enough to attend the Peacock Theater panel later that night were treated to a closed-door viewing of new teaser footage, which you can peep here. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is currently in production, with a future release planned for Netflix. More updates will be shared via the official website, newsletter, and CD Projekt Red's social channels on X, Facebook, and Instagram.
