Union minister urged to introduce direct train from Mangaluru to Ayodhya

Union minister urged to introduce direct train from Mangaluru to Ayodhya

Time of India5 days ago
Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta has written to Union minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, requesting a direct train from Mangaluru to Ayodhya. The MP reached out to the minister in response to the growing public demand from the people of the coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka.
The MP stated that a direct train between these two cities would not only serve the growing travel needs but also emerge as a symbolic cultural corridor, beautifully showcasing the ancient bonds between southern and northern India.
Since there is no direct train at present connecting the two cities, passengers are forced to undertake long and inconvenient journeys via Bengaluru or other junctions, often spending over 40 hours in transit.
A direct train would bring relief to the pilgrims and devotees and would be wholeheartedly welcomed by lakhs across the coastal and Malnad regions.
A weekly or bi-weekly direct train between Mangaluru and Ayodhya via Hassan, Arsikere, and Ballari, or via the Konkan railway route that includes Madgaon, Kalyan, and Nagpur, will greatly promote spiritual tourism, cultural exchange, and ease of travel for citizens of coastal Karnataka, the MP said.

Rename Kannur Express as Rani Abbakka Express
Chowta also urged Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to rename the Kannur Express (train No. 16511/16512) as Rani Abakka Express in honour of one of India's earliest and fiercest freedom fighters, Rani Abbakka of Ullal.
This year marks the 500th birth anniversary of Rani Abbakka, and it presents a fitting moment to pay tribute to her indomitable courage and patriotism. As the queen of Ullal in the 16th century, Rani Abbakka led a valiant resistance against Portuguese colonial forces, defending the sovereignty of her land with unmatched bravery.
Renaming the Kannur Express, which originates from KSR Bengaluru and terminates in Kannur, and passes through the coastal belt of Karnataka via Mangaluru, would be a symbolic tribute to her legacy as a national hero, whose contributions deserve broader recognition, the MP stated.

Trump says chances of EU trade deal are ‘50-50 or less'

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States has a '50-50 chance' or possibly even less of reaching a trade deal with the European Union, although he believes the EU wants an agreement. 'We're working very diligently with Europe, the EU,' Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a trip to Scotland. 'I would say that we have a 50-50 chance, maybe less than that, but a 50-50 chance of making a deal with the EU.' When asked again, he said, 'That's the big one right now … I think the EU has a pretty good chance of making a deal right now,' according to Reuters. The European Commission said on Thursday that a deal with the US was still possible, even as EU countries approved counter-tariffs on €93 billion (about $109 billion) worth of American goods if negotiations break down. The EU's main goal is to avoid the 30% import tariffs that Trump has said will take effect on 1 August if talks do not succeed. Trump said the EU would have to 'buy down' the tariff rate, though he did not give any details. Some EU diplomats believe a deal might involve a 15% tariff on EU goods entering the US, similar to an agreement the US reached with Japan. But the White House said such reports were speculative. The trade deal between the United States and Japan, announced earlier this week by Trump, may already be facing difficulties, with reports on Friday indicating disagreements over how to divide profits from Japan's planned $550 billion investment in the US. The deal includes a 15% reciprocal tariff on imported goods and was presented by Trump as a model for future trade agreements. But according to Reuters, Japan is pushing for profit-sharing based on investment contribution, while the US wants to retain 90% of the returns. Despite the tension, the agreement may have set a new benchmark for Washington's trade policy. Trump has said tariff rates will now range between 15% and 50%, with tougher trading partners facing the higher end of that scale. His 'Liberation Day' tariff plan in April had initially set a 10% base rate on all US trade partners. As part of his broader trade strategy, Trump said on Friday that formal letters detailing tariff rates for over 200 countries would be issued soon. He added that his administration was pushing to finalise trade agreements with key partners, including the European Union, India, and Canada. 'We haven't had a lot of luck with Canada,' Trump said, suggesting the US might go ahead with 35% tariffs on Canadian goods not covered by the USMCA trade deal, as reported by Fox news. Trump also said that talks with China were progressing. 'We have the confines of a deal,' he said, adding that US and Chinese negotiators are expected to meet again next week. Trump's trade adviser Peter Navarro told Bloomberg News that the EU's statements 'should be taken with a grain of salt'. It is not yet clear what the EU is willing to offer. One EU diplomat told Reuters that, unlike Japan, the bloc is not looking at promising investment in the US as part of the deal.

US forces kill top ISIS leader Dhiya Zawba Muslih al-Hardani, two sons in Syria raid

American forces killed an Islamic State group leader in a raid in Syria's Aleppo province on Friday, the US military's Central Command (CENTCOM) said. American forces carried out a raid in Syria's Aleppo province on Friday, killing a senior Islamic State group leader.(Representational image/AP) The raid resulted "in the death of senior ISIS leader, Dhiya Zawba Muslih al-Hardani, and his two adult ISIS-affiliated sons," CENTCOM said in a statement, using an acronym for the jihadist group. "These ISIS individuals posed a threat to US and Coalition forces, as well as the new Syrian government," it said, adding that three women and three children were at the location that was raided and were unharmed in the operation. The Islamic State group rose out of the chaos of the Syrian civil war to seize swaths of territory there and in neighboring Iraq over a decade ago. It has since suffered major defeats in both countries, but the United States still periodically targets the jihadist group's remnants with raids or strikes to prevent it from resurging.

Central committee inspects constructions at Bheemili beach

Visakhapatnam: An expert committee constituted by the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change conducted an inspection on Friday at Bheemili beach to assess unauthorised constructions allegedly carried out by Avyaan Realtors, owned by P Neha Reddy and P Rohit Reddy—the daughter and son-in-law of former Rajya Sabha member P Vijaya Sai Reddy. These constructions reportedly violated coastal regulation zone (CRZ) rules. The Andhra Pradesh Coastal Zone Management Authority has filed a case in the Bheemili court against the company for constructing a concrete wall within CRZ limits without prior approval, violating provisions of the Environment Protection Act, 1986. Though the GVMC partially demolished the wall up to ground level, underground remnants still remain to be cleared. This inspection follows a public interest litigation (PIL No. 53/2024) filed in the AP High Court by Jana Sena corporator Peethala Murthy Yadav, who raised concerns about the large-scale unauthorised concrete structures built on the beach. The High Court ordered the immediate demolition of the illegal constructions and directed authorities to enforce environmental regulations strictly. The expert committee, comprising scientists from the National Institute of Oceanography, Coastal Zone Management Authority, State Pollution Control Board, and Central environment ministry, inspected the site to evaluate the environmental damage caused by the constructions. The committee also collected detailed information related to the case from Murthy Yadav and is expected to submit its report to the high court. The CRZ regulations, framed under the Environment Protection Act, aim to safeguard coastal ecosystems by restricting constructions within a buffer zone from the high tide line.
