Licking Heights earns STEAM Forward grant from META Data Centers

Licking Heights is educating the workforce of the future — sometimes as early as kindergarten. The district recently received a $44,929 STEAM Forward grant from META Data Centers to support hands-on science, technology, engineering and math education for all students, kindergarten through sixth grade.
The STEAM Forward grant will cover a variety of elementary STEM initiatives in the district, including funding for Camp Invention; creating a STEAM area in Everest Elementary, Broad Peak Elementary and Summit Station Intermediate; and additional supplies for the existing STEAM space at Lima Ridge Elementary. The grant was written and submitted by Vicki Willett, Technology Integration Specialist at Licking Heights.
'Licking Heights Local Schools is rapidly evolving into a hub of technological innovation. To prepare students for opportunities in these emerging industries, the STEAM Forward grant aims to transform our fragmented STEM program into a comprehensive, integrated STEAM framework,' Willett said.
This will be the second year in a row that Heights will host Camp Invention at Everest Elementary. 135 students can once again attend the weeklong STEM day camp for $35 instead of the usual $275 rate. Tuition is covered partially by the STEAM Forward grant and partially by funding from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation.
The creation of STEAM labs for K-6 students was motivated by the success of Camp Invention last summer. After seeing such positive student and staff response to camp, Heights staff wanted to create spaces that provide students with those opportunities throughout the school year.
Labs will impact over 3,500 students and their teachers, providing year-round opportunities to deepen exploration of STEAM concepts and ensure sustained engagement and skill development beyond the summer. Teachers will also have professional development opportunities so they can effectively teach students in the labs.
'This project supports the district's broader goal of offering personalized learning experiences for students of all academic levels. Through invention-based challenges, collaborative engineering tasks and technology-integrated arts projects, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing them for the workforce of tomorrow,' Willett said.
Thanks to Willett's grant writing expertise, Heights already received a $5,000 grant from the Ohio STEM Learning Network to begin planning for STEAM labs. Labs will include learning materials such as 3-D printers, various coding robots, circuit boards and microcontrollers and augmented reality tools.
'Vicki Willett is an invaluable member of our district and a constant advocate for STEM in the curriculum and classroom,' said Kevin S. Miller, superintendent. 'At Licking Heights, we pride ourselves on providing students with innovative, real-life learning opportunities that meet their academic interests and prepare them for life after leaving our schools. I am deeply grateful to the staff who make this possible for all students, regardless of their background.'

Itch.io starts reindexing free NSFW content

Digital storefront is reindexing its free adult games, and is talking to its partnered payment processors about plans to gradually reintroduce paid NSFW content. In a new Developer Update , the company said the decision will ensure it can "confidently support the widest range of creators in the long term." has instructed developers and creators who want their games back on the store to tick a 'no payments' box that sits in the pricing section of a game's edit page. It adds that any game that uses "individually priced files' will have those files converted into free content by checking the box. The company is also introducing a new content warnings system for NSFW-tagged pages, which it says all page owners are required to update accordingly before being reindexed. says it has talked to one of its long-standing payment processors, Stripe, about its policies on explicit adult content, and said it will no longer be able to take payments for games deemed to be "designed for sexual gratification" via the platform. This is due to new restrictions enforced by Stripe's banking partners. In a statement included in the update, Stripe said it hasn't closed the door on the possibility of being able to support adult content again in the future. In the meantime, says it is talking to its other payment partners about accepting the card payments Stripe is currently no longer able to process. The future of adult content on appears to be uncertain. It was only last week that all NSFW games on the platform were deindexed and hidden, following the new payment processor policies. The sudden and frustratingly vague rules Steam and introduced to remain in compliance with those payment processors have resulted in unjust casualties. This week, solo developer Cara Cadaver told Engadget that her game, VILE: Exhumed , has been removed from and banned by Steam on the basis of it having scenes of "sexual content with depictions of real people," a description she says is not accurate. VILE: Exhumed is a mainly text-based game, and has been well received in previews, landing a spot on Six One Indie 's Best of PAX East roundup back in May. Steam's decision to remove the game is not eligible for appeal.

Chrono Odyssey Getting Major Changes Following Closed Beta Feedback

Chrono Odyssey Kakao Games Chrono Odyssey , the highly anticipated MMORPG from South Korean Chrono Studio and Kakao Games, recently wrapped its first global Closed Beta Test a few weeks ago and, as expected, there was a ton of feedback from players online. What's nice to see, though, is that the developers seem to be listening and are taking the response to heart. In a two-part Developer Note over on the Chrono Odyssey Steam page (Part 1, Part 2) they've outlined their plans to incorporate feedback. Admittedly, I did attempt to try out the Closed Beta for myself when it was active, but ran into lots of performance issues. I chalked it up to my PC no longer being top-of-the-line with its aging RTX 2060 Super and Intel i5-9600K CPU, but it seems like a lot of optimizations are underway in any case. Maybe it will fair better for me during the next round. 'Player feedback during the Closed Beta has been invaluable,' said , Chrono Odyssey executive producer Sangtae Yoon said in an emailed press release. 'Our goal is to deliver an MMORPG experience that feels deeply polished, responsive, and worth exploring for years to come. These updates are only the beginning.' You can skim over the two lengthy Developer Notes up above for the full breakdown (the second one in particular is thousands of words long) but it honestly looks like they're aiming to make some significant changes. These aren't your typical change logs and bug fixes, these are quite literally top-to-bottom sweeping updates including combat, world design, content variety, performance and stability, as well as a 'full narrative overhaul' of the game's actual story content. 'We are incredibly passionate about Chrono Odyssey and the potential it holds,' he added. 'MMORPG players have been waiting a long time for a world they can truly call home. We're committed to building that experience the right way — with care, with purpose, and hand in hand with our community.' Chrono Odyssey Kakao Games Here is a list of highlighted changes compiled from the press release: Chrono Odyssey Combat System Overhaul Combat will be rebuilt for sharper responsiveness and more impactful gameplay. Improvements will include: Reduced animation delay and input lag for tighter controls Enhanced hit feedback with improved visuals, synced hitboxes, and clearer reactions A new 'Matrix' system that allows each weapon to evolve into four distinct playstyles that allows each weapon to evolve into four distinct playstyles Smarter AI and dynamic enemy behavior that will enhance challenge and replayability Better weapon switching, lock-on mechanics, camera behavior, and controller support Chrono Odyssey Expansive World and Dungeon Upgrades The world of Setera will become denser and more rewarding: Enhancing region-specific features to strengthen visual identity and introducing new exploration elements such as themed caves and diverse routes Dynamic grass and wind systems that will respond to player movement Improved dungeon replayability with randomized gimmicks, branching paths, and challenge-reward systems Additional hidden quests and branching local storylines, featuring unique gear and collectibles Refined PvE Progression and Balancing in Chrono Odyssey PvE progression is being rebalanced to provide a smoother experience. Updates include: Early-game pacing and tutorial content will be fine-tuned to better prepare players for their first Chrono Gate Optional NPC support will be added for the first Chrono Gate, enabling players to fight with allies Solo and party content will be redesigned: solo challenges will emphasize technical, pattern-based mechanics, while party play will offer cooperative objectives and role-based gameplay Major content will feature clearer indicators for recommended level, gear, and party size Chrono Odyssey Stability, Graphics, and Audio Enhancements The team will also deliver major upgrades to performance and fidelity: Rendering and memory systems will be restructured to reduce GPU/CPU load Dynamic loading based on hardware specs to Visual quality will be enhanced with improved lighting, DLSS/FSR support, and smoother transitions Heavier weapon impact sounds, more immersive music loops, and adaptive environmental audio New Chrono Odyssey Social and Quality-of-Life Features Direct party, guild, and friend invites through chat and interface menus Improved map navigation, quest tracking, and ping-based coordination tools New UI and systems for stat clarity, skill presets, gear swapping, and crafting upgrades Chat system upgrades with persistent settings and color-coded channels As you can see, that's a ton of changes and it still isn't everything mentioned. Now that the Chrono Odyssey developers have made such a specific list, it will be interesting to see how much of this they actually get through prior to the next testing period and, more importantly, before the game's full global launch that was planned for this year on consoles and PC.

PUBG's plan to beat Fortnite, Roblox, and every other game

Roblox and Fortnite are two of the biggest games around, and a huge part of why is because they aren't just one game: instead, they're vast platforms where you can party up with your friends, dress up in ridiculous digital outfits, and quickly jump from one experience to another. Back in the day, Fortnite copied PUBG by making a battle royale, and now, PUBG is mimicking Fortnite by trying to become more of a platform than a game. As part of a roadmap released earlier this year, PUBG developer Krafton said that it would let players create their own modes as part of an alpha, and it revealed more details about the alpha this month. This week, Krafton CFO Dongkeun Bae also discussed the company's vision for 'PUBG 2.0' in an earnings call. 'It will not just simply be a battle royale game per se,' he said through a translator. The game will also be 'a gameplay platform' and Krafton is developing 'wide-ranging modes under that objective.' It seems like this approach will be a lot like Fortnite's, which offers a mix of Epic Games-made modes and user-created experiences. Krafton also isn't just doing user-generated content (UGC) because it's 'currently the mainstream,' Bae said. With UGC, if it's opened up to the broader playerbase, players will be able to 'create many different things' with PUBG. The shift makes sense. By opening the PUBG — which is still one of the most-played titles on Steam — to different kinds of experiences, it could grow beyond just hardcore shooter fans. Fortnite's battle royale modes are still quite popular, but you can also play lower-stakes modes themed around Lego, navigating obstacle courses, racing, and playing music together. Epic has put a lot of effort behind expanding from just being a battle royale experience, even some of them, like a combat-free party island, haven't been big hits. And Roblox's user-made Grow A Garden, which is a farming simulator, has been breaking concurrent player records. In some ways, adding user-generated content is a continuation of PUBG and Fortnite following similar tracks. Like Fortnite, PUBG has big crossover events, for example. But PUBG's creator tools have a long way to go to catch up with what's possible with Fortnite and Roblox, though. Roblox was first released in 2006, and the company offers the Roblox Studio for making games and extensive resources for Roblox developers. And Epic is investing heavily in its Unreal Engine-level tools for making Fortnite experiences. But like with Roblox and Fortnite, PUBG players may have already invested time and money that makes switching over to a new game that much more difficult. By letting players make their own experiences, Krafton can keep those players interested in the PUBG universe and potentially pull in new ones. One thing Krafton may also learn from Fortnite: this kind of player-driven expansion can take a long time. Epic has been working and iterating for years to build up Fortnite's ecosystem of user-made experiences, and even then, Epic's own modes are usually the ones with the most players. It will probably take a while to know if Krafton's PUBG 2.0 plan is a winner winner chicken dinner. Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.
