The family of D. Bindu, who lost her life in the building collapse at the Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), has welcomed a State Cabinet's decision to provide financial aid. However, they emphasised that their immediate priority is the surgery of Bindu's daughter, Navami.
'Right now, our only concern is our child's health,' said Vishruthan, Bindu's husband, who has been at the MCH in connection wih the surgery of his daughter. He expressed satisfaction with the government's handling of the situation.
'It is good that the Cabinet has taken decisions. Let them announce and provide what they can. Offering a job to our son and other measures are all procedural. If they come through, that Is fine,' he added.
Review meeting
Meanwhile, Health Minister Veena George convened a review meeting on Wednesday evening to assess the progress of work on the operation theatres in the new surgical block at the Kottayam MCH. The meeting directed the Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL) to complete the theatres within the stipulated timeline. Instructions were also given to ensure the PACS machine is made available at the earliest.
The meeting further directed that telephone connections and other essential utilities in the surgical block be arranged without delay, and that all pending construction work be completed on time. It was also decided that staff appointments should be made in line with the available infrastructure.
The Director of Medical Education and the General Manager of KMSCL were instructed to visit the college, assess the progress on-site and initiate necessary follow-up actions.

Meanwhile, due to concerns regarding the structural safety of the men's hostel block on the MCH campus, college authorities have decided to relocate medical students to an alternative building. According to officials, the students will be temporarily shifted to a newly constructed hostel designated for paramedical students. In the meantime, maintenance work of the men's hostel block will be completed within a month.
The authorities also decided to expedite the procedures for constructing a new building for the men's hostel. The proposal to construct a new hostel building at an estimated cost of ₹20.5 crore was submitted to the government around five months ago. However, no action has been taken so far.

Mother Teresa replaces Atal in Jharkhand scheme name, BJP calls it ‘conversion agenda'

The Hemant Soren government's decision to rename a healthcare scheme launched by the previous Bharatiya Janata Party government after Mother Teresa has kicked up a political storm, with the Opposition accusing it of 'pushing a conversion agenda'. Earlier this week, the Jharkhand Cabinet decided to rename the Atal Mohalla Clinic. Launched under the Raghubar Das-led BJP government as a tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the scheme aims at strengthening health infrastructure in urban slums and provides free primary healthcare services — including consultations, medicines, and diagnostic tests. The decision to rename it 'Mother Teresa Advance Health Clinics' was taken at Chief Minister Hemant Soren's cabinet meeting earlier in the week. The chief minister also approved 20 other key proposals at this meeting. The BJP called it an attempt to 'promote religious conversion', claiming it was part of a 'larger conspiracy'. The BJP has long been alleging there's an attempt to convert the state's tribals to Christianity. 'What contribution has Mother Teresa made to Jharkhand?' senior BJP leader and former Leader of Opposition Amar Kumar Bauri said Saturday at a media briefing in Ranchi. 'The blueprint for a separate Jharkhand was based on the BJP's Vananchal vision, which was a gift from Atal ji. Religious conversion is a serious issue in the state, and Hemant Soren is using this name change to further that agenda.' BJP's Godda MP Nishikant Dubey too raked up the name change, accusing the Soren government of 'trying to erase Vajpayee's name'. He then went on to call the government's actions 'cheap', saying that the chief minister seemed to be 'preparing to end up in jail again'. 'If the government wants to work in the name of Teresa, they can start a new initiative. Why rename a scheme named after Atal ji?' he said. 'By changing the name, the government has acted in a disgraceful manner. The current conduct of the state administration suggests that the CM of Jharkhand, who is also Congress's favourite, seems ready to go to jail once more'. Soren's Jharkhand Mukti Morcha dismissed the charges as 'politically motivated and baseless'. 'Mother Teresa may not have been awarded the Bharat Ratna, but she was honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize for dedicating her entire life to serving the poor, the oppressed, the marginalised, and the sick. Illness knows no religion, and she provided healthcare to thousands without discrimination. Her work was directly connected to health, making her name rightfully fit for such a scheme,' he said. Taking a jibe at BJP, the JMM alleged that the party had 'run out of real issues', claiming it was the 'BJP that started the trend of renaming things across the country'. 'Those holding press conferences have already been rejected by the people in elections… BJP trying to polarise votes in the name of religion and nationality, accusing people of being Bangladeshi when Jharkhand doesn't even share a border with Bangladesh,' he said. Himachal Pradesh Government to spend Rs 207.50 crore to strengthen diagnostic facilities

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Government is making a determined push to revive the ailing healthcare system by launching a focused initiative under 'Vyavastha Parivartan'--a systemic transformation of public health institutions aimed at delivering much-needed relief and improved services to the people. As part of this initiative, the government has proposed a comprehensive investment of Rs. 606.70 crore, with over one-third of the amount, Rs 207.50 crore, earmarked specifically for strengthening diagnostic services across the State, according to a release. A government spokesperson stated that, following the directions of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the health department has prepared a detailed blueprint for the proposal. This move stems from the fact that patients in government hospitals often face the greatest difficulties in getting accurate diagnoses. "Most Medical Colleges, as well as other hospitals in the State, are ill-equipped, as diagnostic machines are 15 to 20 years old. These outdated machines make it difficult for doctors to accurately detect patients' ailments. Moreover, with advancements in medical technology, more efficient machines are now available, which can lead to faster and more accurate treatments of the patients. In response to these challenges, the Chief Minister has directed the replacement of old machines with new and technologically advanced equipment in hospitals," he added. As per the proposal, high-resolution 1.5 Tesla and 3 Tesla MRI machines will be installed at four major medical colleges like IGMC Shimla, SLBSGMC Mandi, Dr. YSPGMC Nahan, GMC Chamba, as well as at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Speciality Chamiyana. In addition, each of the seven medical colleges in the State will be provided with two advanced CT imaging machines, five mobile digital radiography (DR) units, two ceiling-suspended DR X-ray machines, two high-end ultrasound machines with colour Doppler, one mammography unit, and one Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). A PACS unit will also be installed at Kamla Nehru Hospital in Shimla to facilitate the patients. Furthermore, each medical college will receive four portable ultrasound machines and one radiology workstation equipped with 3D software. The installation of this cutting-edge equipment is expected to significantly upgrade diagnostic capabilities and ensure that patients in government healthcare institutions have access to faster, more accurate, and more reliable health care services in the State, the release stated. The spokesperson further noted that most healthcare institutions across the State are currently constrained by limitations in both diagnostic and surgical capabilities. These limitations stem not only from a lack of modern equipment but also from insufficient training of the staff. To address this, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has emphasized 14 key focus areas in the proposal, including simulation-based training, cancer care, digital health, critical care etc. He said, "The aim of this modernization effort is to provide better care to patients within the State, so they no longer have to seek specialized treatment outside the State. Additionally, this initiative is expected to strengthen medical education, leading to significant improvements in the quality of healthcare services in the State."
