Stars align on Diu's shores for inaugural Khelo India Beach Games opening ceremony

If someone is flying out to Diu for a getaway between May 19 and 24, they won't be able to ignore the Khelo India Beach Games (KIBG) even if they tried. Almost every 100 metres, one can see hoardings of the inaugural edition planted along the Airport Road. Faces of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Administrator of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Praful Patel and others graced the posters with the statement Khel ke sitare, Diu ke kinare (Stars of the games, by Diu's shore) splashed underneath.
On Monday evening, by the shores of Ghoghla Beach, the opening ceremony of the KIBG 2025 was a grand affair. The whole programme had a patriotic tinge to it, with the singers prompting the crowd – consisting mostly of the athletes themselves – chant Bharat Mata ki Jai and Vande Maataram ever so often.

Energetic tunes were played – including cult classics like Rang De Basanti and Dangal's title tracks – which compelled the crowd to shake a leg and wave the tricolour in their hands with great fervour.
In attendance were dignitaries like Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Patel, with the former making an entrance on A.R. Rahman's Jai Ho.

'I see the Diu fort lit up. In the sea, our fishermen brothers have decked up the boats. The waves are the source of excitement and the sands give us energy,' Mandaviya said, speaking highly of the preparation done for the Games – the first under the Khelo India initiative. Moreover, the minister revealed plans of making Diu the venue for the Khelo India Beach Games for years to come.
The ceremony also had all the participating States and Union Territories do a parade of their contingents, quite similar to the Olympics. The loudest cheers were reserved for host Daman and Diu and Gujarat. And the evening was capped off by a show of fireworks, as the athletes dispersed to prepare for what would be an action-packed next few days.

PM's visit set to boost tourism in Tiruchi region

The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Brahadisvara Ttemple at Gandgaikonda Cholapuram near Jayankondam, a UNESCO world Heritage monument maintained by the Archaeology Society of India, is set to boost tourism. Ever since the temple was declared as a world heritage monument in 2004, the number of visitors has been on the rise. Foreign tourists evince greater interest in understanding the grandeur and excellence of Chola architecture and sculpture that the temple features. The sprawling lush green lawns on the temple premises teems with children especially on weekends. According to tourism industry sources, Gangaikonda Cholapuram has emerged as one of the top searched items online since the announcement was made on Prime Minister's visit to Brahadisvar Temple about two weeks ago. Besides a number of YouTube channels in Tamil, Hindi, English and others, the event was broadcast live on many news channels across the country, thereby garnering enormous interest among the people to know Rajendra Chola I and the temple built by him. Tourism officials say the temple ranks among the top three places of archaeological significance in Tamil Nadu. The other two are the Brahadisvarar Temple in Thanjavur and the Airavatesvara temple of Darasuram. They are of the view that the tourist footfall to Gangaikonda Cholapuram will certainly witness a steep increase in the immediate future thanks to the immense popularity gained after the visit of Mr. Modi. On average, 9,000 to 10,000 tourists visit Gangaikonda cholapuram per month. As per a recent official data, 9,107 tourists visited Brahadeeswarar Temple in Gangaikonda Cholapuram in May. The footfall includes 342 foreigners. A total of 6,626 tourists visited in June. 'We expect an exponential increase in tourists, particularly domestic, arrival to Gangaikonda cholapuram. We can see this upward trend in August month itself. The tourist footfall in neighbouring Thanjavur and Tiruchi districts will increase correspondingly,' says A. Sankar, Tourism Officer, Ariyalur district.

Aim is to make India a sporting superpower, says PM Modi in Mann Ki Baat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday shared his vision for making the country a sporting superpower and hailed the Indian contingent for winning close to 600 medals at the recent 'World Police and Fire Games'. In the 124th episode of his monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat', PM Modi said that the government's 'Khelo Bharat Niti 2025' has been highly appreciated. 'The goal of this policy is clear - to make India a sporting superpower,' he said, adding that startups related to sports, whether they be sports management or manufacturing, will be helped in every way. He said the policy pays special attention to villages, the poor and daughters. 'Schools and colleges will now make sports a part of everyday life,' he said. 'Imagine how much strength the mission of self-reliance would gain when the youth of the country would play with self-made racket, bat and ball. Friends, sports create team spirit. This is the path to fitness, self-confidence and building a strong India. So play a lot, blossom a lot,' he said. Talking about the biennial World Police and Fire Games, which concluded on July 6 in Birmingham, Alabama, PM Modi said India's uniformed heroes are making headlines not just in service, but also in sports. 'This time, the tournament was held in America, and India created history in it. India won close to 600 medals. We reached the top three out of 71 countries. The hard work of those uniformed personnel who stand for the country day and night, paid off. These friends of ours are now holding the flag high in the sports field as well. I congratulate all the players and the coaching team,' he said. The PM also tested the knowledge of the audience by asking, 'Do you know which is the biggest sporting event other than the Olympics? The answer is – 'World Police and Fire Games'... a sports tournament between policemen, fire fighters, security personnel from all over the world.' By the way, it will also be interesting for you to know that in 2029, these games will be held in India. Players from all over the world will come to our country. We will showcase to them India's hospitality and introduce them to our sports culture, he said. The government plans to host the event in Gujarat's Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Ekta Nagar.
