Beloved chef who cooked for Hollywood royalty before he opened restaurants in Adelaide dies

Daily Mail30-06-2025
A famous Italian chef who cooked for the likes of Sophia Loren and Frank Sinatra before he opened a string of eateries in South Australia has died aged 87.
Tony 'Eugenio' Sanso owned a series of popular restaurants in and around Adelaide after he emigrated from Florence in 1964.
He is credited with transforming Italian food in South Australia through his popular restaurants, which include The Old Mill, Osteria Sanso and Villa Sanso.
The iconic restauranteur died on June 18, his son Terence announced on Wednesday.
'It is with a heavy heart that I must announce the passing of my dear father Eugenio Antonio Sanso, (or) Tony to his friends,' he wrote on social media.
'My father worked in the restaurant business for many years here in Adelaide opening many restaurants in his time.
'His diligence and hard work will be remembered forever and he will be sadly missed by his wife Zeny, his youngest son Eugene and his grandchildren.'
Before settling in Australia, Sanso was a top chef at the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris and The Savoy in London.
He cooked for stars such as Frank Sinatra, Sophia Loren and Bob Hope.
Sanso only retired in 2021 aged 84 after selling the popular Osteria Sanso Restaurant and Accommodation in the Adelaide Hills.
In a touching tribute, his former restaurant said Sanso had 'always been held in high esteem by those he cooked for during his long and illustrious career'.
'Tony had a burning passion for food and people, spending his life bringing his unique flavours of Italian food to the local community,' the post read.
'A man who will be dearly missed by many.'
Many friends, past employees and customers shared their memories of the accomplished chef.
'Such an Adelaide culinary icon over many years and venues. Thoughts are with his family and friends,' one commented.
'We met Tony when we stumbled across his Kanmantoo restaurant a few years back. He was a very friendly man and will be missed by those who knew him,' another said.

'Eugenio was a wonderful friend to my late parents, especially my father. He was a gentleman's gentleman,' a third wrote.
'I am privileged to have met him and for the kinship he gave to my Dad in the last years of his life.'
'Tony was my first ever boss and most incredible person who gave the best hugs and cooked the most incredible food. I remember him fondly,' another shared.
A funeral service for Sanso will be held next Wednesday.

The Block additional cast LEAKED in sensational twist set to shake the renovation series

In a major twist on this year's season of The Block, some of the show's most iconic former contestants are making a dramatic return to the building site - but not everyone made the cut. Daily Mail can exclusively reveal that a select group of past Blockheads have been invited back to mentor, surprise and stir up the new contestants. And according to one senior producer, the decision on who returned came down to one simple rule. 'We bring it up every year,' they told Daily Mail. 'It's the "no d**kheads" policy. We've had 150 teams over the years and we're mates with most of them—but not all.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. This time, the returning favourites aren't just popping in for a cameo. They're stepping into a bigger role designed to shake things up behind the scenes - and on camera. 'We wanted them to lift the energy and give the newbies a boost,' the insider revealed. 'They've lived through it and they get it - the pressure, the tears, the sleep deprivation.' So, who's back? Fan favourites Eliza and Liberty, Kristy and Brett, Steph and Gian, Maddy and Charlotte, and even the original twin troublemakers Alisa and Lysandra have all been spotted on the Daylesford site. And it seems Steph and Gian, in particular, aren't here to play it safe. 'They've got something major up their sleeves,' one crew member teased. 'This isn't just a warm welcome - it's going to shake the season.' Insiders say the returning contestants will bring game-changing twists to mark the show's milestone 1000th episode later this year. 'It's not a cameo—it's a passing of the trowel,' one source joked. 'These guys earned their stripes. They know what's coming, and they're here to make it count.' With tensions already rising and familiar faces back in the mix, this season is shaping up to be one of The Block's most unpredictable yet. Daily Mail has reached out to Channel Nine for comment. Filming on Channel Nine's The Block 2025 has been well underway in regional Victoria since March. In April, aerial photos revealed that this year's season will feature some massive homes. The sprawling construction site located in the tiny rural getaway of Daylesford, 112km from Melbourne, features five blocks. Each of the two-storey homes follows an 'H'-shaped layout, complete with courtyard spaces at both the front and rear. A photo from the site shows that one team of Blockheads is well ahead of their rivals. The contestants appear to have already completed most of the roofing which features several skylights. It's the renovation reality show that's become an Aussie TV juggernaut – but this year, The Block promises to deliver the most demanding season yet. Five couples from across the country have spent months building homes from scratch under high pressure, racing against tight deadlines and under new rules that have left them frozen, frazzled and – at times – in tears. This year's lineup includes WA police officers Britt and Taz, Perth pair Hannah and Can, Victorian couple Emma and Ben, Adelaide best mates Robby and Mat, and Gold Coast parents Sonny and Alicia.

Ex-Premier League ace signs deal for I'm A Celeb All Stars 11 years after being first star kicked off show

FORMER Premier League ace Jimmy Bullard is to appear on I'm A Celebrity All Stars. The ex-Fulham midfielder, 46, who later hosted Sky's Soccer AM, has negotiated a deal to take part in the Ant and Dec-hosted ITV series. 1 It comes after the Sun on Sunday previously revealed Harry Redknapp, former West Ham manager, where Bullard played in the youth team, has also signed up. Jimmy, famous for his catchphrase 'Football's always the winner', originally took part in I'm A Celeb back in 2014 and had a lads' 'bromance' with eventual winner Racing superbike champ Carl Fogarty, 60. A source said: 'Jimmy had a brilliant time in the original series he took part in and it really opened the door to his broadcasting career. 'He was voted off first last time and he felt he had a lot more to give. "Now he's got the chance to get stuck in again, although he's a bit older so he is worried he might find it harder to rough it. 'His banter is still on top form though. Producers are hopeful he'll have a bromance with Harry Redknapp, who is also taking part.' All Stars will be filmed this autumn in South Africa and be screened in the New Year - after the main version of the I'm A Celebrity show in Australia goes out in November and December. Other celebs taking part in the All Stars version include Strictly love rat Seann Walsh, 39, and Towie star Gemma Collins, 44, who lasted only three days in 2014. All Stars last aired in 2023 when singer Myleene Klass won and it was filmed in South Africa's Kruger National Park. ITV declined to comment.
