Rain exposed ‘corruption' by BJP government: Akhilesh
In a statement issued on Sunday, the SP chief said: 'Loot and corruption are at their peak in the BJP government, which has embezzled the budget in the name of smart cities, including Lucknow, which are in a shambles, while roads are dotted with potholes everywhere.'
'Waterlogging and potholed roads have endangered people's lives. With ₹20,000 crore spent in Prayagraj, what have people got except waterlogging? The water-filled deep pits have exposed the BJP government's scams and frauds,' Akhilesh added.
He also criticised the government over the flood situation in various districts.
'From Prayagraj to Varanasi, thousands of houses are inundated with floodwaters. The government was ill-prepared to deal with the floods and ensure rescue and relief. It is busy fulfilling its own interests instead of working in the public interest,' he alleged.
'The government has left the common people to fend for themselves. Farmers and the common man are disappointed with the BJP government's attitude,' the SP chief said.

Former J&K governor Satyapal Malik who spoke out for farmers dies
In late May, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a charge sheet against 79-year-old Satyapal Malik, accusing the former Jammu & Kashmir governor of receiving bribes for awarding a ₹2,200 crore contract to build a hydro-electric project in Kishtwar. Ironically, the case first came to light after Malik went public about offers of bribery to the governor's office in October, 2021. Three years later, the whistleblower became an accused, one of the many dramatic transitions and controversies that became a recurring theme in the last years of the veteran politician's life. Coincidentally, the day also marked the anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 that granted special status to J&K, a fateful event Malik oversaw as the last governor of the state, serving from August, 2018 to October, 2019. And, the self-declared disciple of socialist leader and freedom fighter Ram Manohar Lohia, died at a hospital named after his idol. 'When he first fell ill in February 2024, CBI raided him, and when was again admitted on May 11 this year, CBI charge sheeted him. It started with a urinary tract infection and then impacted his kidneys, his heart, and then other organs,' said KS Rana, Malik's aide since 1980. Rana was named as a co-accused in the charge sheet with CBI alleging that Malik routed the bribe money through him and another associate. When Malik had fallen ill, it was Rana who took on the responsibility to post updates on his health from the veteran leader's social media account. On the day the CBI charge sheet came in, his aides posted a photo of the ailing leader in his hospital bed, one which he never left. 'Many opposition leaders came to see him in hospital but no one from the BJP,'' said Rana, a claim hardly surprising owing to Malik's political stance on issues such as the farm laws passed in 2020. He had also later blamed the BJP government for security lapses leading to the Pulwama attack in 2019, in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed. This criticism came long after the incident in 2023. He also served as the governor of Bihar (2017), Goa (2019), and Meghalaya (2020). He was also given the additional charge to serve as the governor of Odisha for a brief period as additional charge. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences. 'Saddened by the passing away of Shri Satyapal Malik Ji. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,'' he posted on X. Malik was born on July 24, 1946 in Hisawada village, Baghpat. He began his political career while still residing in Hisawda, contesting and winning the Baghpat assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh as a Lok Dal candidate. In his 60-year-long career that spanned various political parties, Malik achieved his most high profile roles as a leader of the BJP , a party he joined in 2004 while again contesting the Baghpat seat. He was part of the Congress and the Janata Dal besides Charan Singh's party, becoming a general secretary of the then newly formed Lok Dal in 1975. He was viewed as a champion of farmers' interests over his political career. 'He really struggled a lot,'' said Charan Singh's grandson and Union minister Jayant Chaudhary. 'He worked both with Chaudhary Charan Singh and Chaudhary Ajit Singh and was associated with Baghpat till he became governor. Personally, he was very affectionate towards me.' During the time he was hospitalised, some Opposition leaders had visited him at the RML hospital. Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi posted,' I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of former Governor Satyapal Malik ji. I will always remember him as a person who, until his last moment, fearlessly spoke the truth and advocated for the interests of the people.' In 2023, Gandhi hosted a conversation with Malik in which the latter echoed the Opposition's sentiments on sundry issues. But, even before this public falling out with the government, Malik was a controversial figure, especially for his stint at Srinagar's Raj Bhawan. In 2018, when he dissolved the state assembly, he blamed a broken fax machine for ignoring People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti's claim to form a government along with the National Conference (NC). Responding to the backlash that followed, Malik then claimed that the governor's office was unmanned because of Eid. The Opposition wasn't amused, as the dissolution was just minutes after Mufti had posted on X (then Twitter) about her intention. In his order, Malik had cited the possibility of horse-trading and state security to justify his decision. Malik had also courted controversy earlier that year for declaring in an interview to this writer the winner of the Srinagar mayoral elections before it took place, eliciting sharp reactions from leaders like Omar Abdullah who asked how Malik was privy to this information. He also upset Opposition leaders, including Abdullah and Mufti, by being dismissive about their treatment and months-long house arrest during the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. Malik had said, 'I have gone to jail 30 times, whoever goes to jail will come out shining as a future leader. They can take political benefit of detentions in future. Don't you want new political leaders to emerge in Kashmir?' Unsurprisingly, when Malik fell out with the BJP's top brass and faced a CBI case and raids, Kashmir's leaders showed little sympathy. Malik's cremation is scheduled for Wednesday at the Lodhi crematorium in Delhi.

In outreach to youth, women, Nitish plays domicile card in jobs before polls
Barely a few months before the Bihar Assembly elections, the Nitish Kumar-led NDA Cabinet on Tuesday cleared the implementation of a domicile policy in mass recruitment of teachers under the Teachers Recruitment Examination (TRE), providing over 85% reservation for it for natives of the state, which will start with the TRE-4 to be held later this year for 1.10 lakh jobs. On July 8, the NDA government had earmarked the existing 35% women reservation in government jobs for native Bihar women. This quota, in force since 2016, had earlier been open to women from other states as well. The government's Tuesday move came a day after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directed the state education department to amend the rules to prioritise Biharis in the teachers' appointment. In a social media post Monday, Nitish, who is also the JD(U) chief, said: 'We have been constantly working to improve the education system of the state ever since our government was formed in November 2005. Teachers have been appointed in large numbers in order to strengthen the education system….The education department has been directed to amend the relevant rules to give priority to the people of Bihar in the teachers' appointment.' The NDA government's decision, coming on the eve of the Assembly polls, assumes significance as it is aimed at wooing the vast constituencies of youth and women across the state. Even though the Nitish government had first announced a domicile policy in 2020, it was not implemented in any recruitment examinations. The government later reversed its decision, which led to protests in subsequent years by various student associations. The TRE-4 would thus mark first time when native Bihar candidates, including 35% women, would avail benefits of a domicile policy. On the Cabinet's decision, Bihar additional chief secretary S Siddharth told reporters, 'Bihar Cabinet gave its nod to 'Bihar State School Teacher (Appointment, Transfer, Disciplinary Action & Service Conditions) (Amendment) Rules 2025' under which people hailing from Bihar alone will be eligible for appointment as school teachers in the state'. As per these amended rules, students who have passed matriculation (Class 10) and intermediate (Class 12) from Bihar will get priority in the appointment of education department's jobs, both in teaching and non-teaching ones, said Siddharth, adding that the move would enable natives of Bihar to avail of over 85% job quota. This would leave candidates from other states to appear for examination for only 15% of these jobs. About 60,000 teachers hailing from outside Bihar had been appointed through three TREs conducted over the last five years. Jobs have emerged as one of the key issues in the run-up to the Bihar polls, with a large section of youths and students holding protests over the last several months to press for a domicile policy for recruitment in government jobs. RJD leader and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Tejashwi Yadav and Jan Suraaj Party chief Prashant Kishor have been among the Bihar leaders who have called for a state domicile policy. Tejashwi has even promised 100% reservation across all jobs if the RJD-led Opposition Mahagathbandhan comes to power in the upcoming polls. In his reaction to Nitish's move, he accused the NDA government of 'copying' the Opposition's agenda. Union minister and LJP(RV) chief Chirag Paswan, an NDA ally, has also favoured a domicile policy to give priority to Bihar youths in government jobs. Dilip Kumar, a student leader who led several protests over non-implementation of a domicile policy, said: 'It is a victory of all Bihar students. We always believed in son-of-soil principle. When other states had not opened avenues for us, our government has now done the right thing by rolling out a domicile policy.' Over the last couple of months, the Nitish government has taken various populist measures, which include the hiking of social security pension from Rs 400 to Rs 1,100 per month and the allotment of 125 unit free electricity to all domestic consumers in the state, numbering 1.67 crore families. More sops The Nitish Cabinet Tuesday also raised the honorarium of midday meal scheme cooks from Rs 1,650 to Rs 3,300 per month, benefitting 2,18,622 cooks. The honorarium of 6,000 night watchmen working in secondary and higher secondary schools has been doubled from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000. The honorarium of 2,350 physical education and health instructors has been increased from Rs 8,000 to Rs 16,000. The Cabinet also increased the monthly incentives of the ASHA and community health workers from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000. PIL against BJP MLA for provocative speeches against Christians
MUMBAI: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Bombay High Court, seeking action against BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar for allegedly delivering provocative speeches against the Christian community. Gopichand Padalkar (HT Archives) (HT PHOTO) The petition, filed by Thane-based activist, Melwyn Fernandes, states that on June 17, during a public rally at Kupwad, Sangli, Padalkar made inflammatory and communally charged statements, linking the death by suicide of a woman from Jalna on June 6, to alleged 'forced religious conversions' by Christian clergies. According to the petition, these allegations constitute an abuse of public office, and are a 'malicious attempt to vilify the Christian community, foment communal disharmony, and usurp the role of investigative authorities, thereby undermining the rule of law'. The plea informed the court that a video of the MLA's speech is in the public domain on online platforms such as YouTube, social media networks and news broadcasts, where Padalkar is allegedly found saying that there were rewards for beating Christians who conduct religious conversions and for killing priests. Padalkar, from the Jat assembly constituency in Sangli district, allegedly proceeded to make communally divisive remarks, thereby stoking hatred and mistrust against the religious minority. The petition claimed that the sitting MLA mocked the foundational tenets of the Christian faith by ridiculing sacred religious beliefs. Providing a transcript of Padalkar's speech, the petition stated that he had allegedly said, 'If Jesus can really perform miracles, let him remove me from my post – then I will listen to you. But he doesn't do anything. So why all these protests?' The petitioner contended that despite widespread public outrage and peaceful protests by over 5,000 Christians and other concerned across Maharashtra, including Mumbai (at Azad Maidan), the authorities failed to initiate suo moto criminal action against Padalkar and his supporters. 'This inaction reflects institutional apathy, fosters political impunity, and erodes public trust in constitutional, governance and the rule of law,' the petition said. 'The statements have the dangerous potential to radicalise economically and socially vulnerable individuals, incite mob violence, and disrupt communal harmony and particularly against the Christian minorities,' it added. It requested the court to direct the state to register a First Information Report (FIR) against Padalkar under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups), 196 (promoting enmity based on religion, etc), 351 (criminal intimidation), 74 (assault against women) 352 (intentional breach of peace) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for 'provocative speeches that pose a grave threat to communal harmony, public order, and the secular ethos enshrined in the Constitution of India'.
