Telangana's school education system is under scrutiny after a poor showing in the Union education ministry's Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0, ranking 25th among 35 states
Telangana has fared poorly in the latest Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 released by the Union ministry of education, ranking 25th among 35 states in the school education index.
The state scored 511.9 out of 1,000 and retained the 'Akanshi-2' grade, which is the second-lowest category in the index. Last year, it had scored 489.3 in the same grade.
The PGI 2.0 evaluates performance across various domains, including learning outcomes and quality, access, infrastructure and facilities.
'This comes as no surprise as we've been lagging in rankings and literacy for years. People have lost faith in govt schools.
To change that, the govt must show political will and strong administration,' said T Papi Reddy, former chairman of the Telangana State Council of Higher Education.
He suggested creating one cluster-based school for every four to five villages and semi-residential schools to ensure equal access to quality education. 'This model would not overburden and would level the playing field for rural students,' he said.
Officials from the Telangana Education Commission acknowledged key gaps in infrastructure and monitoring.

'Many schools still lack basic facilities like drinking water, toilets, and computers. Monitoring teacher performance is also an issue,' said commission chairman Akunuri Murali. 'If we fix these two areas, we can definitely move up in the rankings.'
The only silver lining is that the state was among the top five states in three specific parameters — curbing dropout rates, ensuring universal access to education, and promoting inclusive education. Officials attributed this to the performance of residential schools run under social, tribal, and minority welfare departments.
Telangana shares the Akanshi-2 grade with nine other states, including Assam, Jharkhand, and Bihar.

North Korea's Kim shown honouring troops killed in Russia-Ukraine war

State media images showed leader Kim Jong Un honouring the flag-draped coffins of North Korean soldiers killed helping Russia fight Ukraine, as Seoul's defence ministry said Tuesday it saw no signs of further troop deployments yet. The nuclear-armed North has become one of Russia's main allies during its more than three-year-long Ukraine offensive, sending thousands of troops and container loads of weapons to help the Kremlin oust Ukrainian forces from Kursk. Around 600 North Korean soldiers have been killed and thousands more wounded fighting for Russia, according to South Korean lawmaker Lee Seong-kweun, citing information from Seoul's spy agency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Moose Approaches Girl At Bus Stop And Nudges Her To Follow - Watch What Happens Happy in Shape Undo The images of a visibly emotional Kim mourning the fallen soldiers were broadcast by the official Korean Central Television , released as part of an event in Pyongyang on Sunday attended by Russian Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova . It marked the one-year anniversary of a military pact signed by the two countries, which includes a mutual defence clause. Live Events Kim was shown placing a North Korean flag over a coffin during a ceremony for the return of the remains of North Korean soldiers who were deployed and killed in Moscow's war against Kyiv. The footage also showed images of North Korean soldiers in the battlefield, accompanied by captions that said: "Oh, our heroes, shining stars of my homeland" and "those who gave their lives without hesitation to defend honour shine like radiant stars." North Korean and Russian attendees were shown bursting into tears as they watched the tribute. A photograph of a document, purportedly penned by Kim, was also featured, with a caption saying he had "approved operational plans for the liberation of Kursk and issued attack orders to special operations units" in the final months of 2024. The North Korean leader attended the performance with his teenage daughter Ju Ae -- widely seen by many analysts as his likely successor. North Korea only confirmed it had deployed troops to support Russia's war in Ukraine in April, and admitted that its soldiers had been killed in combat. South Korean lawmaker Lee said last week that the North will send more troops to Russia to assist in its war against Ukraine, possibly as early as this month, citing Seoul's spy agency. But Seoul's defence ministry said Tuesday it currently sees "no signs" that North Korea is preparing to deploy troops to Russia, noting that the country is in its summer training period, with some frontline units also participating in mid-year drills.

Carney dominates national polls according to Nanos Research, while Poilievre fights to re-enter Parliament

As Members of Parliament return to their constituencies for the summer recess, new polling data reveals a sharp shift in Canada's federal political landscape. According to a four-week rolling average by Nanos Research , Prime Minister Mark Carney 's Liberal Party is now supported by 45.2 per cent of Canadians. The Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre , trail significantly at 30.8 per cent, a 13-point gap. The New Democratic Party (NDP), under interim leader Don Davies , sits at 12.1 per cent support. In that vote, the Conservatives had gained 24 seats and secured 41.3 per cent of the popular vote, their strongest showing since 1988. However, recent trends suggest a realignment among voters, particularly blue-collar Canadians. 'Part of the election coalition for the Poilievre Conservatives included blue-collar, working voters,' said Nik Nanos, founder and chief data scientist of Nanos Research. 'Looks like some are returning to the New Democrats.' Live Events Public sentiment on leadership also appears to be shifting. In the latest preferred prime minister polling, Carney is favored by 52.1 per cent of respondents, compared to just 23.2 per cent for Poilievre. That represents a sharp decline for the Conservative leader, who has dropped nearly 10 points since the week before the election. 'Part of the current Carney advantage results from the disarray of the opposition,' Nanos said. Poilievre, who lost his own seat in the election, is aiming to re-enter Parliament through a byelection scheduled for August 18 in the rural Alberta riding of Battle River–Crowfoot. Prime Minister Carney called the byelection on June 30 following the resignation of incumbent Conservative MP Damien Kurek, who had secured over 80 per cent of the vote in April and stepped down 'to allow Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre to run.' Battle River–Crowfoot is a long-time Conservative stronghold, with the party regularly capturing more than 70 per cent of the vote since 2000. The Liberal surge appears driven in part by concerns over US economic policy under President Donald Trump , and Carney's pitch to 'Trump-proof' Canada's economy. Many voters say they are seeking steady leadership on global affairs and domestic cost-of-living challenges. As of now, Carney's Liberals are capitalizing on their lead, but with the upcoming byelection, Poilievre will have a high-profile opportunity to reassert his leadership.

Elon Musk would probably have to shut shop without EV subsidies, Trump says

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed that Tesla CEO Elon Musk 's business empire would not survive without government subsidies, suggesting that Musk would 'probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa' if federal support were withdrawn. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had always opposed the electric vehicle (EV) mandate, a policy direction he called 'ridiculous' and a central part of his campaign stance. 'Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly Endorsed me for President, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate. It is ridiculous, and was always a major part of my campaign,' Trump wrote. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Huge Discounts on Bank-Seized Vehicles in the Philippines!
