Update to Google Maps in selected markets adds interesting AI feature

Phone Arena19-06-2025
Google Maps has pushed out an update that is meant for users of the app in Europe. When you type in your destination, Google Maps typically searches for multiple routes for the navigation option you've selected (car, walking, public transportation, etc.). However, with the addition of AI, Google Maps will check the estimated time of arrival (ETA) of other modes to your destination. If you can reach your destination faster using public transportation or by walking, you'll see those directions on the display instead of directions for driving.

For example, let's say that you have Google Maps set up for driving directions and the app determines that you'll reach your destination faster by taking public transportation. Google Maps will then show you those suggested routes. Not only will you arrive earlier, by taking the bus you are reducing pollution, conserving gas, and doing your part to protect and preserve natural resources. This new feature is available in 60 European cities including Stockholm, Warsaw. and Copenhagen.
In Europe, cycling is huge and Google Maps is adding cycling navigation to 17 new cities with nine of them located in Europe. The app now shows 125,000 kilometers (equal to 77,671 miles) of bike lanes in cities such as Hamburg, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, Rome, Zurich, Budapest, Vienna, and Brussels. Google is using data obtained from local governments and public authorities.
Since Google Maps is looking to get travelers to be more judicious in their consumption of natural resources, it now offers fuel-efficient routes worldwide. Previously, this feature was available only in certain regions. When you type a destination on the app, the fuel-efficient route is listed as an alternative. Each route also shows its ETA so that you'll know how much later you'll arrive at your destination by taking the more fuel-efficient option.

Google Maps is also adding support for low-emission zones which will impact drivers in Italy, Sweden, Austria, and other locations. Google Maps will send alerts that will "check if your vehicle is allowed in these zones." You can ask the app to create an alternate route that bypasses the low-emission zones. Google Maps will support over 1,000 low-emission zones.

Project Green Light uses AI and Google Maps driving trends to help recommend to cities how they can improve their existing traffic light cycles. Project Green Light is available in 20 cities across four continents.

Google Pixel 10 lineup shown in multiple leaks, Week 30 in review

Welcome to your weekly news recap. Google's Pixel 10 series dominated your attention with a total of four top stories. They showed all four upcoming Pixel 10 devices in all of their colors. Google even jumped in on the action and teased the Pixel 10 Pro design officially, and showed the entire four-phone series in the Play Store. The Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and 10 Pro Fold are all coming alongside the Pixel Watch 4 on August 20. The Pixel 10 series will be unveiled on August 20. The lineup reportedly includes four smartphones - Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. They aren't the dullest, but also not the most exciting ever. The first details about the Redmi Note 15 Pro+ surfaced this week. The phone is said to sport a screen with "1.5K" resolution and thin symmetrical bezels on all sides, a 50 MP main camera, a 50 MP telephoto camera, and a battery capacity between 7,000 mAh and 7,999 mAh. The Redmi Note 15 Pro+ will allegedly be powered by the yet-unannounced Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chipset. The CMF Watch 3 Pro is official with a larger 1.43-inch display, a precision-milled metal frame, and a soft-touch silicone strap. It's on sale in several countries for $99/£99/€99. A new vivo or iQOO phone is in the works, as evidenced by a Geekbench run. It packs a Dimensity 9400+ and an 8,000mAh battery! It doesn't have many improvements compared to its predecessor, but one of them is pretty significant. The watch gains dual-band GPS, ChatGPT support and new sports modes. It's available starting today in three color options. It might be the iQOO Z10 Turbo Pro+. Nokia has been parting ways with HMD in the past year, and it looks like it's looking to license its brand name to a new "large scale mobile manufacturer". Nokia had licensed its brand in several different segments – Streamview made TVs, RichGo made headphones (and other smartphone accessories), and OFF Global made laptops. As you can probably tell from the use of the past tense, those branding deals have also come to an end. Which company would you like to see pick up the Nokia brand for phones – one of the established players or another startup like HMD? According to a new rumor from China, the OnePlus 15 will launch in the country in October, but not alone. It will allegedly be unveiled alongside the Ace 6 (and possibly the Ace 6 Pro as well), which is an interesting change in strategy for the brand, which last year unveiled the OnePlus 13 in October and the Ace 5 in December. HMD stopped using the Nokia brand and has been releasing phones under its own brand. Now the Finns may be looking for another company to take up the mantle. The chipset choices are interesting too. It's not something it's done before.

Google said that some Pixel 6a units run the risk of catching on fire. They weren't kidding

A Pixel 6a user woke up Friday after hearing a loud noise. While his senses were returning to him, he noticed a bad smell. His Pixel 6a had already caught on fire. Pulling the device by the cord, he dropped it on the tile floor. The phone had been on the nightstand only 40 cm (1 1/4 feet) away from his head. The bed sheets caught on fire, and the phone owner had inhaled so much smoke that his throat bothered him the rest of the day. A Pixel 6a is burnt to a crisp as Google worries about. | Image credit-Imgbb The update was supposed to be released on July 8th, and only impacted Pixel 6a units will have certain changes made to their battery once the phone completes 400 charging cycles. When that occurs, owners of impacted Pixel 6a models should notice: Shorter battery life between charges Reduction in charging performance Temporary changes to the battery-level indicator as the Pixel 6a is forced to recalibrate after the update. At 375 charging cycles, Pixel 6a users with impacted units will receive a notification to alert them that their battery is about to get a reduction in capacity and charging performance after 400 charging cycles. Impacted Pixel 6a models are eligible for a free battery replacement. Check out this page to learn about the Pixel 6a Battery Performance Program. To have your Pixel 6a officially declared impacted, tap on this link and enter your phone's unique IMEI number in the proper field. To find your IMEI, go to Support > About phone . Scroll down and you should see your IMEI number. Another way to get it is to dial *#06# from your phone. Select the 15-digit number. Copy and paste the number into the box. If you're on your computer, enter the number into the box. Even if your Pixel 6a is impacted and you are entitled to a free battery replacement, you'll need to have your phone inspected, since certain issues will allow Google to refuse to give you the free battery replacement. These issues include "liquid damage, exposure to sharp objects, or excessive force (e.g., a heavily cracked screen that affects the integrity of the device). "In these cases, Google might offer you other options or give you an estimate to pay to have the necessary additional repairs made. Once those repairs are made, you would qualify for the free battery replacement. The bottom line is that once your Pixel 6a is determined to be an impacted model, you can choose from one of the following options: A free battery replacement: This is available at walk-in repair centers in certain countries such as the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Germany, Singapore, Japan, and India. You can have your device taken care of via mail in the U.S. and India. Cash payment: Reports say this cash payment from Google will amount to $100 (converted to local currency). Google Store credit: Reports say that those with an impacted Pixel 6a who choose this option will get $150 Google Store credit (converted to local currency) that can be used towards the purchase of another Pixel device or other Google Store purchases. If your Pixel 6a is found to be impacted, you have until July 8th, 2026, to choose which of the above options you want from Google. Not all Pixel 6a users feel safer once Google sent out the update to throttle the battery and reduce the charging capabilities. As one device user wrote on social media, "I feel like their update that nerfed the battery actually made it worse. I never had any overheating issues with my 6a, then after the update, it started getting super hot. I got the battery replacement and it's fine now." It's obvious that some Pixel 6a models are dangerous. If you own a Pixel 6a , you owe it to yourself and the people you live with to swap out the battery or use credit from Google to buy a new device. If you haven't put the wheels in motion yet, do it now! Remember, back in May a Pixel 6a with a swollen battery exploded.

Weekly poll: do you have a smartwatch or other smart wearable?

The global smartphone market is developing at a healthy pace – it was up 10.5% in Q1 this year compared to the same period last year. In more concrete numbers, 45.6 million units were shipped in the first three months of 2025, of which 34.8 million were smartphones, the other 10.8 million were smart bands. This week we wanted to ask you – do you have a smartwatch or smart band? Let's include smart rings in this too. They are designed to be perfect companions to your smartphone – must-have companions, if marketing is to be believed. There are several distinct categories that can serve different needs. Some are capable enough to replace a phone in many situations, others just serve as a sports/health tracker. Smart wearables come in different shapes and sizes Then again, your smartphone already has a clock and a step counter on it, which is enough for some people. Why spend extra money and get the extra hassle of yet another device that needs charging? Charging is a pain point for wearables. The more capable ones running Google's Wear OS or Apple's watchOS are one camera short of being full smartphones, but they need charging every day or two. Less capable devices still offer plenty of functionality and can last a week – some can go as long as a month. So, first question – do you have a smartwatch and what kind is it? If you don't have a watch yet, are you planning on getting one? Or if you do have one, will you be upgrading it before the end of the year? Leave us a comment with your thoughts on smartwatches, bands and rings below.
