Man convicted of careless driving and possession of cocaine has turned his life around, court hears
Detective Garda Brendan McGarry told Mallow District Court that Kevin Mullins, aged 30, of Evanwood, Castletroy, Co Limerick, was the driver of a white Renault Master van that was observed driving at Newberry near Mallow on August 26, 2023.
Det McGarry said the van was going around bends too quickly, causing it to sway on its rear suspension.
Det McGarry said while Mullins' driving 'wasn't great', road conditions were good on what was a warm summer's evening at 6.30pm.
He conceded the accused's driving was at the 'lower end' of the criteria for dangerous driving, and could reasonably be considered as careless driving.
The court was told Mullins would offer a plea of guilty to the lesser charge of careless driving, and was also pleading guilty to possession of small amounts of cannabis on two occasions and cocaine on one occasion at Holycross, Charleville, Co Cork, on November 17, 2023.
The court heard Mullins had 18 previous convictions, and had been disqualified from driving since the incident in question for drug-driving.
Defence solicitor Cathal Lombard said his client had been fully co-operative at all times and had subsequently been in prison.
He said Mullins had gone through a traumatic period in his life where a 'number of serious illnesses' had affected those close to him. He said Mullins had been drug-free for over a year, was engaging with addiction services and the probation service and had been in employment.
He said Mullins had also completed a pro-social driving course.
Judge Colm Roberts said: 'I hope you are the person your solicitor says you have become', and agreed to reduce the dangerous-driving charge to one of careless-driving. He convicted Mullins of that offence, disqualifying him from driving for one year and imposing a fine of €250, with one month to pay.
For possession of cocaine, he was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for one year, and placed under probation service supervision for six months. The two charges of possession of cannabis were taken into consideration.

Leitrim gardaí recover some items stolen from Ballinamore family business
Dara Reynolds and his father run a farm and construction business in Ballinamore, Co Leitrim. However, after midnight on Monday, July 15, Dara left the yard which is located close to the family home but on his return on Tuesday morning, he was met by an open gate. He knew straight away there was something wrong and found that a large number of tools, equipment and two vehicles had been stolen. The stolen items included a 2016 white Renault Master van, a quad trailer holding a ride-on powerfloat, a motorbike, a concrete drill, a chainsaw, a manual powerfloat, a cement mixer and a power washer. However, Gardaí have now confirmed that following a search, some of the property has been recovered. "My father set up this company long before I was around and it is a family run business. "I am 27 now and I am at it the last 10 years since I finished school. "He is a straight and honest man and to see tens of thousands of euro worth of gear gone, it is desperate. "We will have to try and start over again. Gardaí said they are continuing to investigate the theft of number of items from the yard of a property at Ballinamore between 12.10am and 6.20am on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. A spokesperson said, 'Following a search, some of the property was recovered. 'Gardaí have appealed for anyone with information to come forward. 'This includes anyone who was in the area at the time and has camera (including dash-cam) footage. Man (29) rammed his BMW into bus several times during ‘appalling incident' on motorway
Kabir Alli, Claddagh Park, Tom Bellew Avenue, Dundalk, was sentenced in the district court to three months' imprisonment and disqualified for two years for dangerous driving at Dromad, Co. Louth. A 29-year-old man who drove a BMW car into a minibus several times on the M1 has been spared jail and instead ordered to complete community service following an appeal. This was an 'appalling incident of driving' at Junction 20 of the M1 at the Carrickdale Hotel exit. Mr Alli was in a UK-registered car. There was no explanation for this as he has been living in Ireland since childhood, the judge said. He crashed a number of times into a mini bus, causing significant damage to this vehicle including the driver's seat such was the force of the collision. He was arrested 1km away having walked southbound on the hard shoulder. Judge Hayes said that the female driver of the minibus was placed in fear. She was travelling southbound minding her own business when 'struck with considerable force'. She had driven to the Ballymascanlon roundabout and onto the Carlingford Road where she sought assistance. She no longer drove at night as a result of what happened. It was 'appalling driving' by the other man who has previous convictions including for drink driving. He had not come to garda attention since. Judge Hayes varied the district court order, increasing the three-month sentence to six months, 150 hours community service in lieu to be completed within 12 months. The two-year disqualification for dangerous driving was increased to six years. The six-year disqualification on the refusal charge remains and the judge also imposed a six-month sentence, suspended in its entirety for 12 months. PSNI investigating theft of 21 lambs in Tyrone
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has confirmed that an investigation is underway following the alleged theft of lambs in Co. Tyrone. It is understood that 21 lambs were taken from a field in the Meenagorp Road area of Plumbridge village. The incident was reported to police last Thursday (July 24), but it is believed that the animals may have been taken in the days beforehand. In a statement, the PSNI appealed to anyone in the area with information to come forward, particularly if they witnessed any suspicious activity or an unfamiliar vehicle. Police noted that a trailer would have been needed in order to transport the lambs from the scene. A PSNI statement read: "Police are investigating the theft of 21 lambs from a field on Meenagorp Road in Plumbridge. "The theft was reported to police on 24 July, but may have occurred in recent days before it was reported. "To transport these lambs anywhere would have required a trailer and so police are especially keen to hear from anyone who was in the area last week, and saw any suspicious activity or unfamiliar vehicles. "The number to call with information is 101, quote reference 1954 of 24/07/25 or make a report online [through the PSNI website], or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111." The PSNI also reminded people if they see unusual activity in their area or come across unknown vehicles outside premises or on neighbouring land in rural areas to note important details such as a description or vehicle registration and contact police immediately. Meanwhile, An Garda Síochána is carrying out an investigation after "tens of thousands' of euro worth of equipment were taken from a farmyard in Co. Leitrim. The stolen items included a van, a quad trailer, a bowser power washer, and concrete tools. It is understood that the theft took place on a farmyard in the Ballinamore area of the county, not far from the border with Co. Cavan. According to information received by Agriland, the incident occurred 'in the early hours' of Tuesday (July 15) between midnight and 6:00a.m. Gardaí also confirmed that a report was received of an incident of burglary that occurred at a premises in Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim overnight on July 15, and that a number of items have been reported as stolen. A Renault Master van, with a registration of 161-D-1594, along with quad trailer, was stolen. Other items that were stolen include a Yamaha motorbike, a ride-on power float (for use on fresh concrete), a bowser power washer, and a number of concrete finishing tools. The van is described as 'quite distinctive', with white and red markings around the side. The power float and the trailer are described as 'brand new'.
