Man convicted of careless driving and possession of cocaine has turned his life around, court hears
A van driver who was stopped because he was driving in a careless manner and admitted to possession of cannabis and cocaine has been drug-free for more than a year, the district court was told. Detective Garda Brendan McGarry told Mallow District Court that Kevin Mullins, aged 30, of Evanwood, Castletroy, Co Limerick, was the driver of a white Renault Master van that was observed driving at Newberry near Mallow on August 26, 2023. Det McGarry said the van was going around bends too quickly, causing it to sway on its rear suspension. Det McGarry said while Mullins' driving 'wasn't great', road conditions were good on what was a warm summer's evening at 6.30pm. He conceded the accused's driving was at the 'lower end' of the criteria for dangerous driving, and could reasonably be considered as careless driving. The court was told Mullins would offer a plea of guilty to the lesser charge of careless driving, and was also pleading guilty to possession of small amounts of cannabis on two occasions and cocaine on one occasion at Holycross, Charleville, Co Cork, on November 17, 2023. The court heard Mullins had 18 previous convictions, and had been disqualified from driving since the incident in question for drug-driving. Defence solicitor Cathal Lombard said his client had been fully co-operative at all times and had subsequently been in prison. He said Mullins had gone through a traumatic period in his life where a 'number of serious illnesses' had affected those close to him. He said Mullins had been drug-free for over a year, was engaging with addiction services and the probation service and had been in employment. He said Mullins had also completed a pro-social driving course. Judge Colm Roberts said: 'I hope you are the person your solicitor says you have become', and agreed to reduce the dangerous-driving charge to one of careless-driving. He convicted Mullins of that offence, disqualifying him from driving for one year and imposing a fine of €250, with one month to pay. For possession of cocaine, he was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for one year, and placed under probation service supervision for six months. The two charges of possession of cannabis were taken into consideration. This article is funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme

The Dead Rabbit team is opening a new bar in Jersey City
Twelve years later, The Dead Rabbit is proving that this hare still has legs. One of New York's most awarded pubs, the Irish saloon and cocktail bar in FiDi brought its mixology know-how to Moynihan Train Hall in 2023, cheekily naming the transit bar as The Irish Exit. Last year, the team made the leap all the way to Texas, bringing its perfect pours of Guinness and Irish coffees to Austin. Still tightly under wraps, a two-story saloon from the same group is set to land in Washington D.C. Now, the hare has found another rabbit hole, this time closer to home, bringing a taste of Irish and Mexican cultures to New Jersey. Come this fall, The Dead Rabbit team is debuting an Irish pub and Mexican cantina in Jersey City, named San Patricios. An unlikely pairing at first glance, the bar's marriage of cultures is one pulled from the history books. In the mid-1800s, Irish immigrants defected to Mexico to escape racial and religious prejudice found in the states. During the Mexican-American War, Irish soldiers joined Mexican forces in battle, forming the San Patricio Battalion, where the bar now draws its name. 'At The Dead Rabbit Group, we believe that Irish hospitality is for everyone. San Patricios is our chance to show that spirit through a different lens, one that honors the shared struggles and celebrations of the Irish and Mexican people,' said McGarry in a press release. 'This is more than a concept, it's a statement about solidarity, community, and cultural pride.' The coming bar plans to blend both cultures under one roof, combining 'the raw textures of an Irish pub with the folkloric vibrancy of a Mexican cantina' with altar walls, hand-painted murals and signage that's translated in English, Irish and Spanish. As for the fare, the Dead Rabbit Team will merge Mexican-Irish-inspired street food, washed down with Irish coffees and Carajillos. The shelves will soon carry Irish whiskies, Mexican tequilas, mezcals and sotol, while taps will soon dispense perfect pours of Guinness and Pacifico's. Much like its FiDi outpost, the bar will celebrate its respective cultures, hosting live Irish musicians alongside Mexican folk bands.

Dubliner Alan McGarry hails ‘life-changing' experience on surgery reversal show with US reality stars
Botched: Plastic Surgery Rewind follows nine celebrities and influencers as they consider whether to reverse previous plastic surgery work and go back to a more natural look. The new reality show sees McGarry, alongside celebrities and personalities including singer Aubrey O'Day and Kim Zolciak of The Real Housewives of Atlanta fame. It is hosted by RuPaul's Drag Race judge, Michelle Visage, and plastic surgeon, Dr Terry Dubrow. Dubliner McGarry (35) said they didn't think the likes of O'Day and Zolciak would 'have time to chat' to them, but the other participants on the show had plenty of time for them. 'To be in a house of people that don't know me, living an A-list lifestyle in LA, it was so nice for those people to say nice things. It was a shock, because I'm not used to hearing good things. 'For them to sit with me and have a cup of coffee and tell me all the good things about me meant a lot.' While McGarry had work done in an effort to look better, they said it had the unintended consequence of attracting attention in public. 'I was so involved in how I wanted to look and present myself to people, the aesthetics and getting work done. 'People used to look and stare at me. It was a horrible feeling. I just wanted to have people stop looking at me and to feel and look normal. When I walk down the road, I never stop and stare at anybody.' McGarry has been getting work done since the age of 19 or 20, and that path started with how they were treated growing up in Ballyfermot. 'I went to an all-boys primary school and people used to pick on me for being very flamboyant, and I suppose the bullying affected me in so many different ways. 'I started to change my look. And what I started to do was colour my hair consistently, because the ginger thing was a very big thing for me growing up. 'I know it might be funny now when people read it. Right now, it's a lovely thing to be ginger, but back then it just wasn't a great thing.' Motivated to join the show by regrets over a Brazilian butt lift (BBL), McGarry said the experience became about many other aspects of their appearance. 'It was all about the butt lift. I didn't realise that deep down, there were other things that I wanted to get rid of.' 'It took me maybe a week or so in the house to realise the show was actually helping me decide my journey. If I didn't go on this show, I think I'd still be in a position to be going out and doing things to myself to make myself look better.' They said their experience at the Hollywood 'rewind retreat' proved to be a journey of self-discovery. 'The show changed my life and my perspective in life. If I wasn't on the show, I don't think I'd know who the real Alan was. Since leaving the house, I'm living the true me.'
